Robber Barons During The Gilded Age

After the Civil War, America gave rise to a new era of industrialism, the Gilded Age. An era dominated by powerful figureheads of industry, otherwise known as robber barons, America soon became an international economic power. Many believe that America’s international economic power is due to the doctrine of laissez-faire capitalism, where businesses operated without any interference from the government. However, there are multiple instances where the American government had directly supported the rise of industrialism. The context of Andrew Carnegie is the robber baron. Industrialisation the expansion of factories and the mass production of manufactured goods like steel. The Industrial Revolution of the early 1900s set the foundation for the rise of Carnegie steel. While some say Andrew Carnegie is a caption of industry because he wanted to help others who were poor evidence suggests he is a robber baron because he made the vertical monopoly which makes it harder to compete with him and he had very poor working conditions and even killed some people with those horrible conditions. Andrew Carnegie made it hard for anyone else to produce steel and other various items so he could eliminate his competition which he pretty much did.

The industrial revolution was picking up steam, and these men mastered novel business tactics to triumph. The systems that had kept people in poverty were beginning to deteriorate: those born poor could now achieve wealth using hard work, skill and dedication. First off Crooks is the character that is held back in his journey towards freedom by his race. There are many examples where Crooks is insulted by his race, but there is this specific incident where George is laying down his cards and hears someone calling : “Stable buck, oooh stable buck!” And then, “Where the hell is that goddamn nigger?” This proves that in the 1930’s people were still racist and used to call African Americans names like nigger. And Crooks can’t really do anything because if he does he would probably get tortured or starved, and he can’t quit because it wasent his job, he was a slave.

The Gilded Age was a time of greed, money hungry corporation, and an obsession with wealth. Mark Twain’s novel, The Gilded Age, speaks about the business leaders negative impact on their works with the pursuit of wealth. This era saw a raise in economic growth, with an increase in workforce for all ages and genders. ( Topic 6, overview ) Despite the large number of women who still only worked within the home,the Gilded Age, saw a increase of women involved in education and other areas.

The Gilded Age was an age of rapid economic growth. Railroads, factories, and mines were slowly popping up across the country, creating a variety of new opportunities for entrepreneurs and laborers alike. These new inventions and opportunities created “...an unprecedented accumulation of wealth” (GML, 601). But the transition of America from a small farming based nation to a powerful industrial one created a huge rift between social classes. Most people were either filthy rich or dirt poor, with workers being the latter.

Mark Twain once said, “No country can be well governed unless its citizens as a body keep religiously before their minds the guardians of the law, and the law officers are only the machinery for its execution, nothing more.” In the Gilded Age, which was from 1869 to 1896, politicians ignored their obligation to execute and protect the laws of this nation in favor of lining their own pockets. Presidential administrations and presidential candidates were often time could in corruption scandals that showed how they were stealing the American people’s money. The Grant administration probably being the most notable example of this corruption. Low-level political officers were also a party in the corruption of the gilded age, with corrupt big bosses

Slavery is the white people of the south taking advantage of the blacks in the south by forcing free labor and harsh conditions on to the blacks. Crime and Corruption Wave in the 1920s Despite the 1920s being known as one of the greatest eras of all time due to its luxurious lifestyles and inordinate parties that seemed to start when the sun disappeared and didn't end until the sun once more appeared again, nevertheless, the 1920s was also a time where corruption in government, gang violence and crimes against U.S. law an insurmountable rise that had its disastrous consequences. Harding was a president that was adored by many, but shortly after his unexpected death, scandals such as the Harding Administration Scandal and the Teapot Scandal came to light and ruined the reputation of this once adored president. The era following Reconstruction did not deserve the title of the “Gilded Age” due to its lack of promise and equal opportunity. Many myths existed regarding the practices of society during this time, plenty of which discriminated against the impoverished. A common myth believed to be true by those who did not originate in the United States was that America was paved in gold waiting with open arms. However, upon their [immigrants] arrival, they discovered this was truly a myth. In fact, and old Italian saying stated, "I came to America because I heard the streets were paved with gold.

Unions have been around for a long time. The first union was established in 1866 in the U.S. with the foundation of the National Labor Union or the NLU. The National Labor Union was created to persuade Congress to change laws. The NLU was against holding strikes and instead relied on political action to reach its goals. The NLU, made up of farmers, workers, and reformers, excluding African Americans and women, firstly wanted Congress to limit the work days to just eight hours, and it was able to make this change, but after this none of its other suggestions made it through.

Following the Civil War the United States experienced a time of drastic change that molded the country into a true world power. While the South experienced reconstruction; industry in the North was converted to peacetime purposes. As a result industry became more prominent than ever before in an almost completely agriculture driven nation(The Gilded Age). Accordingly. the United States entered a new era known as the “Gilded Age” in which the American economy, cities, and population grew at an astonishing rate.

Robber barons, specifically Andrew Carnegie, an industrialist and John D. Rockefeller, a philanthropist, were the chosen, elite members of society according to the doctrine of Social Darwinism. Darwinism is when evolution occurs and the strongest organisms of an ecosystem survive and reproduce to outnumber the weaker, less fit organisms of an ecosystem. Similarly Social Darwinism follows the same concept, but in a capitalist sense of thought. Those who were able to exploit the Gilded Age’s laissez faire economy to their own benefit, like the robber barons Andrew Carnegie of Carnegie Steel and J. D. Rockefeller of Standard Oil, were the fittest members of society because they were able to survive in the grueling and ruthless free economy. By usurping all of the fresh yet unfit immigrants that were flowing into the States due to the rise of urbanization, these two men integrated these easily-manipulated people into their factories to augment their profits.

he History of Organized Crime in America The late 1800’s to early 1900’s was the start of The organized crime network that has many operations throughout the United States, particularly in New York City and Chicago. This was also known as the American Mafia which started with street gangs back in the late 1800’s. These groups made success through illicit liquor trade which started in the 1920’s Prohibition Era. According to History.com, the 18th amendment was ratified which banned manufacturing and sale of intoxicating liquors which was known as the Prohibition period in American History.

The Guilded age was a period of wealth and improvement which was used to cover up poverty and corruption inside the united states. Eventhough there were lots of improvements, not only in technology but also in society, there were lots of problems. Problems such as corruption and poverty. As time went on people started to realise this problems and some got improved, but others didn’t. 　　This gilded age was a problem.
