“We all live in suspense from day to day; in other words, you are the hero of your own story” (Mary Mccarthy www.Quotesgram.com ). Richard Connell is the writer of his own story and his story has suspense so when something suspenseful Happen everybody gets worried. Suspense tears people apart that's what makes his story better. Richard Connell adds suspense by making the general sound crazy. He makes the story go up and down and then back up in suspense. Rainsford finds out he hunts humans and thinks the general is crazy. For example, Richard uses the general as an friend and as a enemy. He goes on to make the general attack Rainsford. Richard Connell uses levels of suspense more effectively than Edgar Allan Poe because of the setting. The crazy people on the island and the hunt at the end of the story. What makes Richard Connell story so great is that he made the general sound like a cool guy then made him say he hunts humans, that was so unexpected. For example the sentence that gives it away is “It must have courage, cunning, and above it all, It must be able to reason” (Feldman 224). Like Rainsford said “No animal can reason” (Feldman 224). This part is like when you're watching a great tv show and it goes to commercial. …show more content…
For example Montresor says “We will go back; your health is precious.” (Feldman 64) That creates suspense because of the beginning of the story Montresor doesn’t like Fortunato. Montresor says to Fortunato “How remarkably well you are looking today” (Feldman 62). He was being sarcastic because he hates Fortunato, so it wouldn’t make sense for him to be nice. Edgar Allan Poe does have a good story but there's not enough suspense. Montresor does play it off as if Fortunato is his friend. As you know if you read the story Montresor kills Fortunato. Edgar Allan Poe’s setting in the story adds suspense because they are underground, so that makes it weird around all those dead
Allowing Connell to present such elements through imagery, foreshadowing, and point of view. Perhaps in the most suspenseful moments, it’s the
A good way of creating a suspenseful mood for the reader is to through the setting. And, looking at how Richard Connell described the
Montresor tortures Fortunato, both physiologically and physically. Montresor clearly gives Fortunato “multiple chances to escape his fate” (Delany 34), as he gives Fortunato obvious clues to his true intensions. These include leading Fortunato into a place for the dead, telling Fortunato not to go due to his severe cough that made it “impossible to reply” (Poe 5) at times, reminding Fortunato of his family arms, mentioning Luchesi, and showing Fortunato a trowel. Montresor seems to receive morbid joy out of the fact that Fortunato is so intoxicated that, just like the foot on Montresor’s coat of arms, he is unintentionally “stepping into his own destruction” (Cervo
Alfred Hitchcock is remembered as the "master of suspense", most notably in one of his cinemas, "Psycho". Hitchcock used a variety of sensory details, to shock moreover frighten his audience. Three sensory details that he used, is when we notice a cop following Marion, we see that Norman is stalking Marion, and when a shadowy figure shows up while Marion is taking a shower. The first sensory detail that creates suspense is when we see the cop following Marion. We believe that the cop recognizes something is up furthermore, is going to assert Marion for stealing the money.
In Hernando Tellez’s short story, “Lather and Nothing Else”, Tellez successfully creates suspense throughout the story, a story about a barber and his dilemma of whether or not he should kill his enemy, who also happens to be his client. The story is entertaining yet suspenseful from using a variety of strategies to create suspense throughout the story. Tellez uses two main methods throughout the story, first person point of view and the two main conflicts introduced in the story. Since Tellez uses first person point of view it makes the reader feel like they are the main character himself. The reader goes through the main character's thought process, making readers wonder what the main character is planning.
Suspense is a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen. For instance, page 173 states, “And this I did for seven long nights- every night just at midnight- but I found the eye always closed; and so it was impossible to do the work; for it was not the old man who vexed me; but his Evil Eye”. Page 173 has many examples of suspense but, the main one was that he wouldn’t kill the man for seven days. He was safe because, his eye was closed but, this then makes the reader fear for the man because, what if one of his eyes opened.
The Raven crafts the idea of suspense by using a range of different types of literary features. The use of hyperboles creates more suspense because the more exaggeration used grips the reader in more. Describing the Raven as “Ghastly, Grim and ancient” (8) makes the idea that the author is trying to get through, more coherent as Poe is offering more description. The way Poe repeats his “Sorrow for the lost Lenore” (2) helps embed the idea that he misses Lenore but it also makes the reader wonder where she went, why she left and why she is so important, which creates suspense. The way Poe uses repetition and pathos when he is trying to get an idea through is very prominent.
As readers, we have no idea what Fortunato did to Montresor or his family name to drive him to such revenge. Poe hints at certain things, from revenge and the family crest to his arrogance of insisting that Fortunato penetrate the Montresor vault to acquire the esteemed Cask Amontillado. "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge" (1126). The only clue is that Montresor systematically closes up Fortunato in a bone chamber perhaps with others who have wronged his family in the past. However, due to the reader's not knowing his true injustice, his murder seems unjustified and maybe even cruel to some
Did you know that authors use many different literary devices to tell a story? A literary device is a technique writers use to make their stories unique and interesting. Literary devices like simile, metaphor, suspense, personification, allusion, irony, foreshadowing, and imagery are used in lots of stories. In the short story ¨The Most Dangerous Game”, Richard Connell uses literary devices such as suspense and simile to help the reader gain a clear understanding of the story. In this essay, I will provide two examples of literary devices used throughout Richard Connell’s short story.
This piece of text is suspenseful to the reader because the reader does not know where the narrator is or what time period this event
Suspense is an integral part of storytelling. Without suspense, certain stories would not create their intended effect. Edgar Allen Poe wrote many books and poems, which were all under a gothic theme. His writings were very dark and mysterious, and they all contained suspense. Poe’s novel “The Tell-Tale Heart” and his poem “The Raven” contain suspense, which is created through point-of-view, irony, and diction.
Montresor has wrath toward Fortunato for insulting and treating him less. Fortunato was tricked into thinking a different result would happen than his death. Montressor tried to make his own justice of the situation ‘’ At length, i will be avenged. ‘’ pg 83 Poe showing he's going to get back at Fortunato for what he did. “He did not perceive that my smile was at his demise’’
Suspense seems to be something that lingers through each story. From the beginning of “The Cask of Amontillado,” the story only grew more and more suspenseful. It all began when Montresor explains to us that he had been insulted and would get revenge. Montresor stated, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge,” (Poe 1). Additionally, in “The Masque of the Red Death,” the story had also been suspenseful since the start when we learned about the Red Death and what it had caused.
Suspense by Edgar Allen Poe Suspense is a writing style that authors use to make it so a reader is ahead of the characters in the story. Edgar Allen Poe profoundly used this technique in his story “Tell Tale Heart”. The narrator is psychotic and is particularly tormented by an old man’s ‘evil’ glass eye. He was willing to do close to anything to be rid of the eye, including murder.
