In “The Biggest Loser” (October 23, 2015), Paul Krugman asserts that the Benghazi committee is a witch hunt and that ¨Trey Gowdy and company” are chumps. Mr. Krugman illustrates his displeasure with the committee and the head of it, Trey Gowdy, through belittling diction and Rhetorical question. He uses this choice in diction and rhetorical question in order to deter anyone from taking the accusations of the committee seriously by calling not only the committee “chumps” and but anyone who listens to the committee an ¨ even bigger chump” then the committee is. Krugman appeals to his more liberal audience by talking about the committee, and its tea party support, with a tone of contempt by using insulting diction like “loser” and “chump”.

Through the implementation of various rhetorical strategies, sensory imagery, and eloquent phrasing, Leah Hager Cohen effectively depicts the predominant idea that despite the stereotypical assumption that the audibly impaired cannot possibly be normal, her grandpa is, indeed, quite normal. The author employs vivid sensory imagery strategically throughout the essay. By strategically, she applies the images meticulously in order to fortify her ideas. She writes, “He smacked his lips and sucked his teeth…” (2, 5-6).

In “What We Are to Advertisers” and “Men’s Men and Women’s Women” both Twitchell and Craig reveal how advertisers utilize stereotypes to manipulate and persuade consumers into purchasing their products. Companies label their audience and advertise to them accordingly. Using reliable sources such as Stanford Research Institute, companies are able to use the data to their advantage to help market their products to a specific demographic. Craig and Twitchell give examples of this ploy in action by revealing how companies use “positioning” to advertise the same product to two demographics to earn more profit. Craig delves more into the advertisers ' plan by exposing the science behind commercials.

In “Lost in Translation”, Lera Boroditsky describes the importance of language to large corporate businesses so they know what to expect and they will learn more about it in her studies. The article, “Lost in Translation” was published in The Wall Street Journal to help businesses understand the impact language has on people in all parts of the world. Boroditsky captures her audience by using the nursery rhyme “Humpty Dumpty” which uses the appeal to authority. She talks about her experience and what she did to further her research her personal experience fit well with personal anecdote. The reader will also see that she makes a vivid illustration of the work she did.

Pitts Article Rhetorical Analysis – Final Draft In life people try to comfort others in times of grieving. Leonard Pitts comforts his readers in his article, “We will go forward from this moment ” by trying to make since of the 9/11 attack. Pitts uses emotion and logic to persuade the Americans that the terrorists can do what they want to America, but America is tough enough to handle it.

The United States is made up of some of the most diverse and interesting cultures in the world. Jamila Lyiscott proves this by showing her different dialects and how they are all equally important. Lyiscott believes that the way she speaks towards her parents, towards her friends, and towards her colleagues are all one in the same.  Throughout the entirety of her speech, Lyiscott changes up her vocal patterns and dialects so that the audience can understand first hand what each of these dialects are. When she talks about her father, Lyiscott uses her native tongue, when she talks to her fellow neighbors and close friends she switches it up to a more urbanized dialect, and when she is in school she masks the other two dialects with a professional sounding language.

In his article “Why Literature Matters,” Gioia constructs his argument by using credibility through ethos and cause and effect. Through this approach, Gioia attempts to persuade readers about the criticality of literature in the future of America.

In this passage, Charlotte Perkins Gilman highlights the theme that women must use their intellect or go mad through the use of literary qualities and writing styles. Gilman also uses the use of capital letters to portray the decline in the narrators’ sanity. This shows the decline in the sanity of a person because the words in all-caps is shown as abrupt, loud remarks. Gilman uses this method multiple times in her short story and this method was used twice in this passage. When the narrator wrote, “LOOKING AT THE PAPER!”, the major decline in her mental health was shown.
