The purpose of Sgt. John Wilson is to give information to the reader in the sense of a autobiography. Lois Simmie does this by foreshadowing the event in the prologue. But not completely giving it away till much further in the book. if this were a novel the sequence of events would change completely but since this is an autobiography the order of events do not need to be followed 100% all the way through.

Chris's announcement begins to make the old conflicts come to the surface.

“Me Talk Pretty One Day” is a humorous and sarcastic article written by David Sedaris. It describes the experience that he had returning to school as an adult to learn French in Paris and the challenges that he is faced with along the way. He recalls his time there where he and his classmates are tormented by their teacher over the course of the year. This leads Sedaris to feel alienated during class and in public places due to the harsh repercussions that the teacher had bestowed upon them for even the simplest of errors. It takes him several months of this kind of suffering before he can fluently understand the language.

In this passage, Charlotte Perkins Gilman highlights the theme that women must use their intellect or go mad through the use of literary qualities and writing styles. Gilman also uses the use of capital letters to portray the decline in the narrators’ sanity. This shows the decline in the sanity of a person because the words in all-caps is shown as abrupt, loud remarks. Gilman uses this method multiple times in her short story and this method was used twice in this passage. When the narrator wrote, “LOOKING AT THE PAPER!”, the major decline in her mental health was shown.

" (Sedaris 1) He continues to go on throughout his essay expressing the difficulties of learning French, living in France and the obstacles he has to overcome to succeed.
