The protestant reformation, which originated in Saxony, Germany, was a period of time in which protestant reformers led a revolt agaisnt the medieval church. In response to the protestant reformation, the catholic or counter reformation emerged from the church. Along with societal and governmental reforms, the catholic reformation involved political reforms, which called for the Council of Trent. This was a council which was summoned by Pope Paul III and held in Northern Italy. The primary reason as to why the council was called was to reassert church doctrine, however, most of the reforms made dealt with internal church discipline.
