In both poems “Before I Got My Eye Put Out” and “ We Grow Accustomed To the Dark” by Emily Dickinson. She talks about adjusting and change. The former poem is about recollecting memories of one 's vision before the loss of sight the and the dramatic change experienced . In the latter poem, Ms. Dickinson speaks about how things are going to always adjust and how we get used to the darkness. The speaker in ‘We grow accustomed to the dark’ would react to losing one’s sight the same as the speaker in ‘Before i got my eye put out’.

Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 to a family of conservative Calvinists on their Amherst Homestead in Massachusetts. She spent her younger childhood reading, busy with school, and exploring nature and her love of the earth. When she was old enough, she attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in South Hadley, but only for a year. “Emily Dickinson Biography”, on Biography.com, states that agoraphobia, anxiety, and depression kept her out of school often, leading to quitting school despite being an exemplary student. From this time on she lived with her mother, taking care of her as she grew ill, never marrying or having children.

Her poems were always meant to tell the truth, however, the truth could easily become distorted. She was credited for having “...brought about a revolution in American poetry.” (Salem Press 285). It was the world around her and her relationships that influenced her writing the most. Whether it was her history or what other people thought about her, her views on her own poetry led Emily Dickinson to become one of the most outstanding poets of her time, one that would change the world.
