In “The Impossibility of Religious Freedom," Winifred Sullivan addresses the issue of no definitions of what is religion in the first amendment. The court had to decide "whether the religious practice in question is legally religious," and without definitions and clear lines this task was very difficult and controversial. The Mormon community had similar issues with religion and politics when it came to practicing polygamy. Mormons believe that polygamy allowed believers to "reach the highest levels of salvation," making polygamy part of their religious beliefs. The main issue seen throughout these articles and Bonomi, is the need for the government to have a way of defining religion if they want to make laws and later enforce them.

They were relying on their faith to get them through this event. Some people started to lose their faith and started to worry about their life. People started to die off in the railroad car.

Oftentimes, the effects of traumatic experiences can transcend the importance or the gravity of original beliefs. With every passing day, Elie is seeing more and more innocent infants, children, men, and women dying all around him, simultaneously. However, as the survivors around him congregate and continue to pray to God on their own volition he is thoroughly confused. With the amount of deaths around him, he questions everything, and thinks aloud.

A connection I can make with all of these quotes is that they all affected Meursault. The color red, sun, and the heat all affected Meursault 's thought process and his actions. He does not know this, but these quotes will affect him in the current situation and in the future. The first motif is the color red. In this novel, the color red has the symbolic meaning of blood and love.

I have been going to church every Sunday I’ve been here, because they use the same punishment for skipping. These bloody copy cats use the exact same public embarrassment as we do. Another aspect that they copy about us is telling little children that if they didn’t go to church they would drown. They’re life is practically the same as ours. For centuries, Christianity has been used by white supremacists as a tool of oppression against people of color. More recently, Christianity has been used to justify the subjugation of black people through their enslavement and later segregation. Despite this, the black community has often been attracted to Christianity, “the religion of their oppressors,” for numerous reasons, including the hope for liberation (Brown Douglas xii). Black people raised in the Christian tradition have also rejected the religion in recognition of its unjust qualities. The challenge facing black Christians and those who deny white supremacy is whether to have faith in the liberating and positive aspects of Christianity, or to doubt the religious institution in light of its history of oppression.

RELIGION CAUSES MORE HAARM THAN GOOD TO SOCIETY Religion according to the oxford dictionary is the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power especially a personal God or gods. Every human being in one way or the other belongs to a particular religion. Since religion makes us worship one God then it should be binding all of us. Actually it is not, it rather tears people apart day in and day out .It is true that religion has influenced society positively in diverse ways, but the bad outweighs the good. Thus I think religion causes more harm than good to the society.

Culture and Religion seem to be working hand in hand in society, when looking at culture we look at characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, food, social habits (things that are done natural e.g. saying please and thank you), music and arts. With religion people often use the word to mean the worship of a god or gods. However, some religions do not have gods. On Salesman we see sales people living their day, trying to sell working class people bibles. As an example of direct cinema, this documentary clearly is open for interpretation by the viewer. From one side we see the perspective of the sales people, which struggle to get a sale done and need to do their job to make ends meet. On the other side, we see their customers, clearly from middle class, who are reluctant to by a bible given their economical situations. Yet the dealers try to establish the need for religion for their customer to solve all other needs and gain an education.
