In the 11th century, Pope Urban II called all Europeans to fight in the crusades. The Crusades lasted from 1096- 1291. People wanted to fight for God and the pope to get back the Holy Land. The Seljuk Turks, who were Muslims, inhabited the Holy Land at this time. The Muslims were not treating the Holy Land and God in the way Christians believed they should be treated. The Crusades were caused primarily by religious devotion for the remission of sins, loyalty to the pope, and the earning back of the Holy Land for God. When Pope Urban II offered remission of sins to those who fought in the Crusades, many were quick to sign up to ensure an eternal life in heaven with God. People of this time were scared of not being able to get into heaven because of the sins they might have committed. Remission …show more content…
In the Old Testament, God had set aside the Holy Land as the Promised Land for the Chosen People whom he had saved from bondage in Egypt. The Jews in Egypt were suffering as slaves, just as the Christians of the east were under persecution. In the Chronicles of Fulk of Chartres, it is said that “God does not wish those to suffer want who, carrying their crosses, have vowed to follow Him, nay even unto the end…” God wanted those Christians set free. He does not wish for us to suffer. This was why the Crusades were fought for God. Crusaders fought to win the Holy Land back, but also to free Christians from persecution. Solomon bar Samson said in The Jewish Chronicler, “…set out for the Holy City, which had been desecrated by barbaric nations, there to seek their house of idolatry and banish the Muslims and other denizens of the land.” God’s Holy Land had become inhabited by pagans who weren’t worshipping Him. God wasn’t `receiving adoration in the way He was supposed to be. Loyalty to the pope and remission of sins all go back to God and regaining the Holy Land for
In my opinion, I believe that the Crusades came about due to political greed and the need for power. I think sometimes it is seen as a serious of religious campaigns, but I don 't believe any religion would truly influence military battles to conquer the lands of other peoples, to me, that is the desire of power and greed. The First Crusade was called by Pope Urban II in 1905, which started as a "pilgrimage" then ended as a military expedition by Roman Catholic Europe to conquer the Holy Lands, which were originally taken by the Muslim conquests of the Levant. This began with Emperor Alexios sent an ambassador to the pope requesting military support, in which Pope Urban II, requested Catholic volunteers (Using religious beliefs to attract people
The First Crusade was a very dark and scary time in history, the first of many crusades to finally catch the “Holy Lands” that were called upon by Pope Urban II. The crusades were fought against many different religions including the Franks, the Byzantine Empire, the Seljuk Turks, and the RCC crusaders to name only a few. This crusade was fought for many reasons including religion, political power, political defense, and political greed. These four factors played a huge part in the crusades, however the factor that started the crusades and motivated many, not all, but many to fight in the crusades was religion. Many different religions were present at the time and all of them wanted to conquer the “Holy Land” of Jerusalem, throughout battles,
The Crusades started in 1096 and ended in 1300. The first Crusades achieved their mission in 1099 when they successfully regained control of the Holy Land, The Muslims then vowed to fight back to regain control. After the Crusades won back the territory they would lose it again, but
some of us know, the Crusades is not something that we enjoy discussing, but they were a big part of religious history. The Crusades were what the pope called “holy wars or expeditions,” that knights or people of their religion went on to gain control over holy land. Each Crusade had a social, economic, and/or political goal and aimed for one land at a time. The pope even exclaimed that if you went on a Crusade that you were assured a place in heaven. These Crusades, or “holy wars”, were driven by religious faith within varieties of religion like Muslims and Christians.
At the beginning of the eleventh century, western Europe was deeply divided and rife with conflict and war between states. However, despite the animosity that existed between many of them, they were all connected by their Christian faith and obedience to the papal state. When Pope Urban II declared the First Crusade in 1095, it served as a rallying point for knights and lay people alike to prove their faith and fight for a common cause. There are few other instances of such religious fervor, devotion, and unity to be found among the kingdoms of Europe at this time. Over the course of the Four Crusades and the span of almost two centuries, the people of the West became involved in numerous conflicts with often bloody and violent endings.
What were the Crusades? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, 1 the Crusades were a series of holy wars called by popes with the promise of indulgences for those who fought in them and directed against external and internal enemies of Christendom for the recovery of Christian property or in defense of the Church or Christian people. This essay is going to outline the main events, and explain the reasons for, the first three crusades, by giving the timeline of main events that took place and telling as to why the Crusades happened. The First Crusade was initiated in November 1095 by Pope Urban II in the town of Clermont in France.
The other seven crusades followed through the 11th, 12th and 13th century As will become evident, the First Crusade had multiple political and military consequences in the development of Western Civilization. It led to the seven subsequent crusades, the establishment of the “crusaders states”, the creation of military orders, the centralization of monarchical power and diminution of the Pope’s influence, the firsts pogroms and the first contact between oriental and occidental cultures, which later led to the expeditions
European Christians perceive the Crusades in a few different ways depending on what region of Europe that they were located in. For example, at the very beginning in 1095, Pope Urban gave a sermon in France urging all of his Christian brothers to fight to protect their land and faith from the Heathens. Now the term Heathens were used as a tem to define non-Christians, but at the time it was specific to Muslims. The struggle between the Christians mainly took part in the Orient, which was the Asia Minor or present day Greece and Turkey. Furthermore, the Christians in Europe perceived the Crusades differently in France than if they were in the Asia Minor, due to the fact that one group had direct contact with the war and others had more of an
Pope Urban II’s speech at Clermont in 1095 was a call to crusade given outdoors to the nobles, commoners and church leaders of the Western European Christians (the Franks). The people were moved by this speech and it changed history, launching the first crusade to capture Jerusalem from the Muslim Turks. After hearing Pope Urban II’s speech, thousands of Western European Christians were moved to embark on the dangerous journey and fight in the crusade. I believe the main reasons they were moved and persuaded to fight was; 1) they felt it was their Christian duty, 2) Pope Urban promised them absolution for their sins and 3) they felt compelled to defend Christianity, their holy land and the Eastern Christians.

The Crusades began in November, 1095, where Pope Urban made an appeal to many of the French Archbishops, Bishops, Abbots, and any other high officials and nobility, that to reclaim the Holy Land, a Crusade was their best option. The Holy Lands had been recently attacked by the Turks, and that numerous of their Christian Citizens had been taken as prisoners back to their own country, and some of God’s Churches were obliterated. The altars were ruined by filth and defilement, and people were killed mercilessly throughout the city of Jerusalem. The destruction of Jerusalem was the trigger of the first Crusade, and unbeknownst to the upper hierarchy citizens who Pope Urban managed to convince of the Crusade in the first place, had no idea what
