One of the first metaphors he uses was when he was describing the fire that God holds you over and if provoked (when you sin) he will drop you down to hell. He uses a great analogy when he talks about it because he says”The God that holds you over the pit of hell much as one holds a spider or some loathsome insect over the fire”, and that is a real interpretation of what we are to God in Edward’s eyes. All these metaphors can also be used as imagery too because the author uses such good words and phrases it good that you can imagine what he is saying.

A Christ Figure is a literary character whose actions are homogeneous with that of Jesus Christ. A Separate Peace, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and Cool Hand Luke are all works that incorporate a Christ Figure as one of their characters. Some of the actions exhibited by these characters include the performing of miracles, a last supper, a death and resurrection, and the betterment of their fellow peers. Christ Figures in literature commonly perform a number of miracles, which their acolytes once viewed as infeasible. McMurphy, the Christ Figure in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. is placed on a hospital ward brimming with hopeless patients under the control of an authoritarian nurse.

Jonathan Edwards’ “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” is a reflection of the Puritan society and their beliefs. In seventeenth-century Massachusetts, the Puritan theocracy that reigned over the new settlers believed in the idea of predestination and in a God that was angry and wrathful. Jonathan Edwards, a beloved preacher, depicted God as a terrifyingly powerful entity that would punish any who did not vehemently worship God. Edwards’ teachings fall in line with the period of his preaching, known as the Great Awakening- a fervent religious revitalization in the New World created to leash in settlers who began leaving the church in favor of The Great Awakening’s philosophical advancements. First and foremost, Jonathan Edwards portrays his God as angry and wrathful.

Jonathan Edwards depicts God as a wrathful, harsh and aggressive deity. His sermon emphasizes on the importance of salvation and remorse. Reflecting Puritan ideals, he expresses Gods vision of humans. How people are instinctive sinners and God is the only one able to determine those worthy of salvation. His stated principles construe the main pillar of their religion, predestination.

In this quote from Mrs. Bradstreet, she is showing that everything that is gone now, does not matter to her, all that matters is that god is still here, “There’s wealth enough, I need no more” (line 51). She doesn’t need anything when she has god. Mr. Edwards on the other hand, uses fear and doubt to guilt his listeners into becoming apart of the Puritan lifestyle when he says, “God has so many different ways of taking wicked men out of this world” (pg.120). In this quote from “Sinners in the Angry Hand of God” Mr. Edwards reminds his listeners that they could die any day due to their sins without god. Edwards has a common theme of bringing up constantly that god is holding them all over a giant pit that leads to hell, “Held in the hand of god, over the pit of hell.”

Using movies as a way of teaching a specific time period is an entertaining but often fictitious method to education. Especially, when Hollywood blockbusters like Gladiator (2000) are involved. However, some Hollywood pictures that do a sufficient job of showcasing a time in history. Ron Howard’s Cinderella Man, also starring Russell Crowe, is a rarity in the world of historical fiction film. While it is still not 100% factual, it does do a fantastic job of featuring the atmosphere of the early 1930’s.

Juxtaposition The movie I watched was Edward Scissorhands, Directed by Tim Burton, Produced by Denise Di Novi and Tim Burton, Screenplay by Caroline Thompson Starring Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder. The movie starts with an old woman telling her granddaughter a story about a boy named Edward who has scissors for hands. His childhood was sad because he was made by a creator that died when he was very young therefore he grew up alone When he gets older, an older woman finds him and welcomes him to her home where her family of four happily reside. Later on he starts developing feeling for her daughter who is approximately his age even though she was afraid of him in the beginning.

When Edward first entered the town, he quickly gained a popular reputation because of his unusual charms that considerably differ from the norms of society. Rather than the people fearing Edward, their curiosity made them more fascinated in change. The housewives lacked a sense of entertainment and amusement since they followed the conformity of the town by staying home all day while the husbands went to work. When Edward arrived, he provides them with pleasure by artistically trimming their hedges, dogs and hair which further enhances his uniqueness. He is admired for his hedge trimming and hair cutting skills which contributed to the citizens seeking to find their own individuality.

In Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Miller’s Tale” he uses symbolism as a literary element to create an underlying Christian theme that portrays the characters in the story as biblical figures.
