Regional & Economic Growth Assessment The North and South were both different and similar in how they operated. They were mostly based on the categories of transportation, agriculture, geography/climate, labor/industry, and society during the early 1800’s. These categories decided how much the North and South would progress as the country continued to grow. Geography/Climate In the North, they had all the four seasons of fall, winter, spring, and summer. The North had cold winters and hot summers compared to the South. Many Northern states like Maine had really short growing times and long, cold winters that were bad for crops. The more Southern states like Ohio were better for crops as they had a longer growing season. The geography of …show more content…
With the invention of the “cotton gin” and other inventions like it, it caused the demand for slaves to go up and to man these machines. The crops they grew in the South were tobacco, rice, sugar cane, and indigo. These were mostly the "big money" crops sold. Near some of the bays in the South, they gathered fish, oysters, and crabs. They also grew cotton as it was a promising crop, but it was difficult for them to get out the unnecessary parts. That is why the invention of the “cotton gin” was very important for the South, as it helped them get out seeds faster than a slave could. Ten years after the invention of the “cotton gin”, cotton became the South’s most important …show more content…
It was also important for factory owners to deliver goods to customers far away from where these goods were manufactured. One improvement they made to help transportation was making a system of roads. This made it a lot easier for travelling from state to state, and even allowed people to pass through the Appalachian Mountains to more Western states with ease. Though the system of roads helped a lot, river travel was still a lot faster. The Northern states made canals to get across the North like the canal from the Hudson River to Lake Erie. This was to let steamboats, a new form of transportation, to deliver goods to the states bordering the rivers and lakes they travelled on. Rails was also one of the largest forms of transportation in the North. Steam-powered trains were used to carry passengers and goods to anywhere that track was
On the map you can see how the numerous canals, roads, and new rivers provided a cut in time for transporting goods to the other parts of the world. The second image provides a visual of the railroads that were improved during this revolution. Steamboats were considered the profitable form of transportation. The first successful steamboat was built by Robert Fulton. Canals were used to bring connection between interior areas and natural waterways.
During 1800-1848, the United States regions were shaped different due to technological and economic changes which changed labor relations in each region. The economy in the north was depended on manufacturing, whereas, the economy in the south was depended on agriculture. The northern and southern regions were significantly different from one another until the idea of cotton came into the picture. The two regions were shaped differently during this time period for various reasons.
During this time period there was many writers writing both for and against the South. A major person in history, Thomas Jefferson, would write against the North and for the South. That is only one of many example from back then, but at this time some of the greatest critics of the South were from the South. Some people believe the South has such a long memory on the civil war because they lost, and even though some people in the current South want many of their peers to just forget about that time in history, many will not give it up.
The industrial revolution was in the late 1800s and early 1900s it is what made america. What i will be displaying you in the cotton gin. The cotton gin was an invention to make it easier to take the seeds out of cotton. The inventor of this mechanism was Eli Whitney. This was one of the key inventions of the industrial revolution and shaped the economy of the South.
During the 1820’s-1860’s the economy for both north and south were doing outstanding especially when it came to agriculture. During 1815, cotton was worth more than any other exports in the United State, and as the years went by cotton was the main export in the game. The southern states were filled with slaves and the northern states were filled with free people, so you would assume the southern states would have an advantage on agriculture but your wrong because in the south climate change had a major effect on their economy. The north had plenty of water because of the baes and rivers so they opened up a bunch of factories that would run off water called waterpower. The north was abusing their advantages and thats why they had 90 percent
Due to increased productivity, cotton became a cash crop in the South
Sectionalism The definition of the word sectionalism is the restriction of interest to a narrow sphere. There were 3 main sections that practiced sectionalism in the 1800s. These sections were the North, the South, and the West. A few events that created sectional conflict were tariffs, slavery, representation, and states rights.
In the early years of Antebellum South Carolina, the harvesting and processing cotton was very high in demand for the textile industries of the northern
The use of the cotton gin had a major impact on slavery by expanding the use and population of slaves. “This machine revolutionized the process of separating cotton from its seed, making it dramatically faster and less expensive to turn picked cotton into usable cotton for textiles” the author said. Harvesting the cotton fields was intense work and the more cotton that was being produced lead to more fields causing more slaves to be needed to work those fields. All the large cotton plantations that the south maintained, by 1850 the slave population increased tremendously. “Southern wealth had become reliant on this one crop and thus was completely dependent on slave-labor.”

This connected the eastern coast of the United States to the western coast. It also branched off to reach many different places throughout the whole continental U.S. This allowed the easy access to transportation of goods and services. A farmer’s grains, livestock, and any other goods could be easily shipped due to the connected railroads. This helped people in the agricultural industry reach out to the industrial economy
What was the south all about? Cotton was not the only crop grown in the South, but it was sure the crop that fueled the Southern economy. Southerners began saying ''Cotton is king'' because cotton became so populated that they would choose it over Industry. The cotton gin was a compact machine that removed seeds from cotton fibers. The value of enslaved people increased because of their key role in producing cotton and sugar.
The building of roads, canals and railroads played a large role in the United States during the 1800s. They served the purpose of connecting towns and settlements so that goods could be transported quickly and more efficiently. These goods could be transported fast, cheap and in safe way through the Erie Canal that was built to connect the Great Lakes to New York. Railroads were important during Civil War as well, because it helped in the transportation of goods, supplies and weapons when necessary. These new forms of transportation shaped the United States into the place that it is today.
There were more slaves in the South overtime due to the rise of the cotton that needed to be picked by the slaves. It was affecting the institution and use of slavery by getting more slaves to raise the production rate of cotton. The end of the African slaves that worked in cotton field ended in 1865 due to the Civil War ending slavery. The civil war can be traced back to the cotton gin invention because by this time they should been using a cotton gin to get some of the work done. The cotton gin was a major impact to cotton because it eliminated such a crucial time of the cotton process by taking out the seeds of the cotton that would take the slaves a long time when the cotton gin would be done with it at a fast
