Reflective Journal 4- The Genetics of Short Sleepers Mutations are the basis of genetic variation, which allows evolution to occur (Waddell). Because of this, they are essential to the continuity of a species’ existence, especially if that species is constantly undergoing environmental changes. Although mutations are important in the evolutionary process, some of them have positive, negative, and neutral effects on populations, depending on the type and severity. For example, the rare genetic mutation Progeria causes accelerated aging and most of the people who are carriers will die around age thirteen because of a heart attack or stroke (Dvorsky). This would obviously be considered a negative genetic mutation in comparison to Short Sleeper’s mutation, which allows carriers to productively function off of less hours of sleep. Progeria is causing harm to individuals since most carriers die at such a young age, while Short Sleepers are generally productive members of society who are able to accomplish many of their goals in less amount of time (ABC News). …show more content…
If a medication were created to mimic this mutation, it would not be nearly as safe. The average person needs a certain amount of sleep every night and without it there are severe consequences such as obesity, diabetes, and even early death (Consequences of Insufficient Sleep). This medication could potentially be compared to caffeine and other stimulants, which a great amount of research has concluded to cause further health problems. The medication would only be safe or comparable to the mutation if it would not affect the individual’s health and it was made out of natural
You 'll spend a significant portion of your life sleeping. So finding a mattress that 's comfortable, high quality, and long lasting is extremely important. An ideal mattress is both highly comfortable, but it still firm enough to provide adequate support. The Sleep Master Ultima 8 Inch memory foam mattress greatly exceeds these criteria, while still being far more affordable than most high-end mattresses. A high-quality mattress with multiple layers, the Sleep Master Ultima does away with traditional springs and opts for a complete foam design.
If asked how is a person’s lifetime spent, numerous people would think of the times devoted to family. They may reflect of the years of gaining an education, or attempting to find a soulmate to spend the rest of their life with. However, we rarely consider the time we spend preparing our body to continue living our lives. Oddly enough, the time we allow our body to recuperate, through sleeping, is where we spend more than a third of our lifetime; this is equivalent to approximately twenty five years cycling through the stages of sleep, yet at some point in time we all have been deprived of some essential hours of shut eye (Altevogt and Harvey). Therefore, people, in today’s society, often complain of being constantly tired, yet many do not understand the stages of sleep and common problems that accompany it.
(R. Bijlsma, 2005). This process is known as genotypic adaptation or evolutionary adaptation. These phenomena are important from an evolutionary perspective. The possible occurrence of evolutionary adaptation and the rate at which it can proceed depends on the presence
‘The Big Sleep’ - Hayden Munro The 1940’s film ‘The Big Sleep’ effectively uses time and place to shape the viewer's understanding of corruption as well as gender roles. Masculinity ,femininity and corruption are demonstrated throughout the film providing an insight into this era of the American underworld setting. Corruption is a central theme in ‘The Big Sleep’ which provides viewers an insight into how the 1940’s American setting affects the viewers understanding. Pathetic fallacy is utilized during the scene where Geiger is seen getting into a car with Carol while it is raining. The rain creates a dark feel linking negative connotations of the underworld and corruption.
Sleepless in American is a National Geographic documentary on the lack of sleep Americans are receiving each night. The film starts with the statistic that “40% of American adults are sleep deprived” and followed with different effects of sleep deprivation such as: weight gain, delayed reaction time, depression, anxiety, speeds the growth of cancer, and has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Although, there is no scientific evidence to support the need for sleep, it is an important process that allows our bodies to function properly. Several sleep studies have been performed to understand the effects sleep deprivation has on a person. The participants of the sleep trial only received four hours of sleep per night.
Response to “The Importance of Sleep” As the media develops and objects referred to as distractors become more relevant in today's world, it has become hard for us to focus on what should truly be valued in our priorities. A big mistake a lot of us offer up is our sleep, however in “The Importance of Sleep '' composed by Luke Davis, he discusses the significance of putting your personal distractors away early and getting the recommended amounts of sleep as you will learn, comes with many benefits. In this multi genre article, he discusses the stages of sleep, the benefits that come out of going to bed earlier, and his personal experience with the benefits he listed. Starting this multi genre piece, Davis begins with a letter to his readers
This explains that organisms that are better adapted to their environment tend to survive longer and transmit more of their genetic characteristics to succeeding generations than do those that are less well adapted (Farlex,
Jean M. Twenge argues that the excessive use of smartphones and social media is detrimental to the current and upcoming generations. My experience using Snapchat, Instagram, and other applications on my smartphone supports this because I have experienced some of the effects Twenge has stated in the article such as the way smartphones causes sleep deprivation among teens, the fact that teens who are involved in smartphone use are more likely to be unhappy, and that they are more likely to be lonier. The consensus that was concluded from Twenge’s argument is that the use of smartphones is causing the current generation in some way, shape or form to lack in the ability to socialize, the ability to reach contentment within their lives, and the
Sleep apnea is a potentially deadly sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. This disorder tends to go unnoticed, and becomes increasingly prevalent in unsuspecting people-especially if they are alone. There are many ways to become aware of these sleeping conditions, as well as treatments that can assist in keeping the risk lowered. By becoming a standard medical procedure, the disorder will retain a more focused treatment as well as gain more recognition as a serious affliction for people that may suffer. With the complications sleep apnea creates in the body, it is important to be informed and develop an awareness for what may lead to more deadly diseases, such as heart disease.
Throughout the week my sleep patterns have varied. A few of the nights I sleep great and got over eight hours of sleep, and four of the days I got less than six hours of sleep. I noticed during the week on the nights I have a lot of homework, I do not get a ton of sleep, and the nights I don’t have a lot of homework I tend to get more. The night I get the most sleep is Friday night into Saturday morning because that is my day to sleep in. During the week, I get up early for either work or school, and on Sundays I get up early for church.
Sleep Journal and Reflection Paper Amber Ivy American Public University System Before, during, and after the logging of my sleep journal, I learned an abundance of information about myself in accordance to the dreams I had been having. The last ten days I logged what I was eating, when I went to bed, how many times I woke up during the night, and when I woke up for the day. As soon as I woke up for the day, I wrote as much as I could remember about the dream/ s I had.
Accordingly, it is one in which “is characterized by a stable sleep schedule that is substantially later than the conventional or desired time”, wherein there is “extreme difficulty arising when they attempt to conform to a conventional work schedule or other social demands” (Sack et al., 2007). This condition affects in excess of 15% of adults and adolescents, according to the American Sleep Association (2018). Circadian rhythms are pivotal in explaining the nature of this psychological disorder, where their reliance is based on environmental cues known as zeitgebers to regulate the twenty-four-hour cycle of behaviour or physiological activity.
During a typical night’s sleep cycle, there are several stages of sleep: N1, N2, N3, and N4. If people are sleep deprived, they will experience negative impacts on their ability to learn and their health. To began, the first stage of sleep, N1 (NREM Stage 1), is light sleep. As theta wave activity increases and alpha wave activity fades away, people are said to be entering N1 sleep, or light sleep.
This mutation is one of the many mutations that led to the evolution of the Indohyus to the whale as we know it
They have three main types of sleep patterns you have; Monophasic, Biphasic, and Polyphasic. The first sleep pattern is Monophasic. It is when a person has one sleep per day. You would have to sleep around eight hours per night. Second sleep pattern is Biphasic.
