In the memoir, Red Scarf Girl, by Ji-li Jiang, Ji-li changes over the course of her story because she is happy in the beginning,her mood stays the same at the beginning of the middle and then changes whent he story moves forwards in the middle. In the beginning of the story Ji-li is the happiest girl in the world. During the prologue Ji-li says” They hoped I was the happiest girl in the world, and I was”. This proves in the beginning of the story Ji-li describes that she was very happy.

Throughout the book, Ji-li shows that she grows and matures through her experiences. In the beginning of the story, Ji-li is oblivious and happy, but by the end she is mature, understanding and responsible. Red Scarf Girl is a story of Jiang’s personal experience from the Chinese Cultural Revolution, and how it affected her and her family. Ji-Li Jiang is just a school-girl in the beginning of the book. One day, Jiang is asked to audition for a Liberation Army dance team. She is very excited about this, but then is told by her parents she cannot audition because she would not pass the background check. In the Chinese Cultural Revolution Mao wanted to get rid of the “four olds” of China.

Xiong uses battles, executions, assassinations, and scandals to appeal to readers of any genre. Once a reader gets into the book they are hooked in the epic events of the book and the deep look into the ruling class. Unfortunately, Xiong’s novel might somewhat difficult to get into for many readers with no experience in Chinese history. Xiong also attempts to utilize dialogue that often comes off as underdeveloped or simplistic.

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, written by Dai Sijie, is set in 1971 during the China’s Cultural Revolution. The book starts with two boys, unnamed narrator and his friend Luo being sent from their hometown Chengdu to a small village in Phoenix Mountain to be “re-educated”. The book continues with them skillfully living through the harsh village life with their talent of storytelling and their western knowledge gained from books. Ji-li Jiang was brainwashed by Mao to believe that “father and mother are dear, but dearer still is Chairman Mao” but as the book progresses Ji-Li starts putting family before Chairman Mao At the start Ji-li was all with the cultural revolution. She was excited about Liberation Army tryouts and the destruction of the Great Prosperity Market Sign board. Ji-li lived by this quote "Heaven and earth are great, but greater still is the kindness of the Communist Party; father and mother are dear, but dearer still is Chairman Mao."

Dai Sijie is the Chinese author, who opposites side of the government of China during the Cultural Revolution, which is his childhood that he has to go to be re-educated by poor peasants. The setting of this book, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, is the re-education at that time, and the main characters of this book, Luo and Ma, are re-educated students like Sijie. He uses these literary elements to reveal political or social issues about the social class by the education difference, the area of living, and desire to read. In the Sijie’s book, the characters’ traits are used to explore the education difference because the villagers, who live in the Phoenix of Mountain, learn how they survive by farming and mining rather than reading and writing.

For my book review I chose to read “The Girl in the Red Coat,” a memoir written by Holocaust survivor Roma Ligocka along with some help from Iris Von Finickenstein. This book was originally written in German and published in Germany in 2000 by Verlagsgruppe Droemer Weltbild Gmgh & Co KG. It was then translated to English and re-published by Bantam Dell A division of Random House. Inc. New York, New York in 2002.
