A film that I have watched and has made me think about life and view the world differently is “Real women have curves” by Josefina Lopez. When I first watched this film during my English classed, it intrigued me by how this film can make many women relate as to what the main character(Ana) goes through. It shows the reality of what most Hispanic households can be like.Us as woman, are expected to hold accountable of cultural expectations such as cleaning, working and staying at home instead of leaving to college for your dreams. As being a teenage Mexican-American going into the stage of womanhood, expectations rise and become something that has to be necessary to be done as a mother says so.As seeing this film, it made me realize so …show more content…
As a Mexican-American woman going into my passage to womanhood, I have similar experiences like Ana does.I am expected to clean and do things around the household solemnly because I am a woman. The guys at my house don’t have to worry about a single thing.Yes the men do work, but so do all the women in the house.Even after work, we have to cook and clean and serve the men as they ask for..Everything about this film makes me think outside of my life.Ana is a feminist who graduated from school and is ambitious to accomplish things. She comes from a first generation family and all that her mother says has to be done. Her sister Estela is older and never went to college as her mother demanded her to stay to help with the household and work in a sweatshop. She never got the chance to live her dreams as her mother had expectations for her.All this has made me realize that it is not only a film for entertainment but it makes me comprehend that many of us woman go through and will always be expected to do.Ana’s mom, Carmen, is very harsh with how she tells Ana things. She body shames her all the time calling her “fat” and “ugly” and always speaks her mind without caring about her feelings.Ana had a passion for school and her dream school was a university that is located in New York which is far away from where she lives.Throughout the beginning of the film, Ana listened to her mother and did not do things she wanted all because of the expectations set from her mother. She
Anna is a quiet girl who is a victim of bullying at her college because of her body's figure with huge breasts and a big butt. She faces criticism and people always make fun of her body. Her only friend is Yasmin and Anna's mother has been trying to make her see Yasmin as a potential love partner. Unfortunately she is sexually assaulted by her very own boyfriend Matt Preston with the help of her step brother Brian simmons.
She details her experience realizing she was, in fact, a Black woman, which meant she was automatically considered, by society, inferior. This revelation was particularly jarring due to her unracialized upbringing, and she challenges this conviction to its essence. Instead, she bases her identity on the environmental factors that occur around her.
Her social skills weren't exactly up to date. Suddenly, she got enrolled in Mica Area High. During her time at Mica Area High she wasn’t accepted by the other students. Her boyfriend Leo Borlock even convinces her to change to try to fit in. In my opinion, she shouldn't have changed herself, I think she would be happy staying true to herself.
The movie also shows different stausticsand how it is a problem in society. There is a satistic of the money spent on plastic surgury can pay for a specific years of college depending on the type of college. The use of media, speaker, and satistics help to support the main idea that the media focuses more on womens apperence then they do of showing them in
This theme is developed through the mother yet deciding to stand out and do life her own way. As a woman, the mother in this story is expected to act like everyone else. Women in
Hence, it explains why Carmen does not want her daughter to get a college education, since she is too influenced by the tradition, she thinks it is the right thing to do. As a result, tradition like this can hinder people from achieving their
