Reading three different books written in different genres bettered my understanding of the Holocaust. Each book teaches the readers more and more important information about the horrible time. Reading different points of views about the Holocaust helps the reader get different perspectives on the dark time. Although the stories are written in such different styles, they all share some sort of connection which is that they all lived during this tough time period.

You would think that after surviving a war you would get to go home but that was not the case. War prison was similar to concentration camps as you were still treated differently and had to do lots of work. For example, in the text it states, “See this mess? It better be spotlessly clean in one hour. Understand! We really worked very hard. But, an hour later… Not finished yet! This will cost you your soup, you lazy bastards!” (Spiegelman 52). This shows that they did the same kind of work that was done in the camps. This novel was the most powerful because it explained in detail what Elie went through. Reading about what Elie had experienced from his point of view makes it easier for the reader to understand what was going on. For example, when Elie explains how it felt to get beaten, I can really visualize how awful it was because he explained it the way it had happened. In the novel, Elie states, “I no longer felt anything except the lashes of the whip… He took his time between lashes. Only the first really hurt. I heard him count… It was over. I had not realized it, but I had fainted. I came to when they doused me with cold water” (Wiesel 57-58). This shows that Elie had been beaten so many times that he could barely feel the hit anymore.
