In my previous blog (My 2018 Reading Goals), I mentioned that one of my reading goal this year is to finish 50 books. To be able to achieve it, I plan to finish at least one book per week. Therefore, I prepared a list of books that I would be read - or better known as TBR (to-be-read) in the book community. And in this month, I have prepared six books in my January TBR.
1. City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare
As the fifth book in The Mortal Instruments Series, City of Lost Souls is my top priority book to finish this month. I have started reading this book couple days ago and right now I am already on page 156. Not only to achieve one of my 2018 reading goals — which is to complete book series that I have started in 2017, the other reason why I am

Since the majority of the books on my January TBR is fantasy, by having contemporary it will help to balance it. Sometime, after read several fantasy books in a row or when reading a fantasy novel with an intense storyline, we could end up feeling overwhelmed and contemporary help to refresh yourself and ready to absorb the new fantasy story.
5. Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
Another book that I pick up in order to catch up with the new release book is Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake. This book is the first book in the series, follow the story of a triplet who each of them has their own unique magical ability. They need to fight - till death, to be the winner and will be crowned as the queen of their kingdom. This high fantasy book is the first book in the series and the second book titled One Dark Throne was released in September 2017.
Although it is a high fantasy like Of Fire and Stars, this book more eerie and darker. Aside from that, the feminism also highlighted in this book since all of the main characters is a woman and it follows the story when woman rules its world.
6. Mocking Jay by Suzanne
The novel that I chose to read was The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. The Killer Angels is a historical fiction novel based on the Civil War. The setting of the book starts in June in 1863 on the 29th and goes through July 3rd. The story starts in Pennsylvania with the Confederate army moving towards Gettysburg in the span of the first few days. The main characters are General Robert E. Lee who was the commander of the Confederate army, Lee’s number two, General James Longstreet and Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain from the Union side.
The book I am currently reading is called “The House of Hades” by Rick Riordan. It is the fourth book of The Heroes of Olympus series. This book is part of my reading goal. It helps my reading goal because it is one of Rick Riordan books. After this book, there is only one more left until I finish The Heroes of Olympus series.
For my novel of choice, I chose The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. The novel follows Nathan price, a Baptist preacher, and his family as he attempts to bring salvation to people in Belgian Congo. However, this novel is way more complex than I thought it would be since it deals with issues involving family dynamics, religion, injustice, politics and many more. The novel is also told from five different points of view from Orleanna Price and her four daughters Rachel, Leah, Adah and Ruth May.
Reading Response How do the last chapters make you feel? Recently, I started reading a book called Ghost Messages by Jacqueline Guest, and I have just finished it. In my opinion, the genre of this book would be mystery, fantasy, and historical fiction.
The book I chose to read for my book review was “ Killing Mr.Griffin”. It is about 5 high school students who hate their english teacher Mr. Griffin and come up with a plan to kidnap him. Their main purpose is to just torture and make Mr. Griffin think he is going to die. The plan takes a tragic turn and results in Mr. Griffin's death. The plan simply falls apart in a domino effect of terror and grief.
A book that impacted my life and has made who I am today is Winter Girls. Winter Girls is about two teenage girls who struggle with horrible eating disorders. The protagonist goes through a lot throughout the book like meeting cruel people, the lost of her best friend starts to haunt her, and even family troubles start to rise because of her eating disorder. This book starts off very light hearted, but the more you read the darker things get and you truly get to see what this mental illness does to you.
It is a Christian fantasy novel, but can be enjoyed by any readers who enjoy a good tale of light versus dark. The protagonist of the tale, Maggie Sheffield, finds herself on a quest to deliver some important information to a scholar, but not everyone wants her to succeed. It is a fast paced tale that is worth your time if you are a fan of authors like C.S. Lewis. 2. Delver Magic : Sanctum’s Beach by Jeff Inlo (http://manybooks.net/titles/inlojother09delver_magic.html)
Two of my favorite books I've read this semester are Underneath The Sycamore Tree by B. Celeste and A Thousand boy kisses by Tille Cole. Both these books explore the lives of two different girls who have different sicknesses. These two books explore many themes and moods using a variety of literary devices. Both these books show a struggle with the news of their sickness, living with it and trying to overcome it.
Alex Finger 9/11/16 Summer Reading Period 1 Book(s) I want to read this summer: Friday Night Lights by H.G Bissinger The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey The Boy in The Striped Pajamas by John Boyne The Life of Pi by Yann Martel One Year After by
OTHER BOOK SERIES YOU MAY LIKE: Many Mike Rawlins fans also enjoy the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. The series of novels is about a fictional world where two girl are chosen from a district to fight to the death with only one survivor coming out. Mike Rawlins fans also love the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman. The His Dark Materials are fantasy novels following the adventures of Will Parry and Lyra Belaqua, two children coming to age as they wander a set of parallel
Of the few books that I've read that I truly couldn't put down, the one that stands out the most is The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman, originally published as Northern Lights in the United Kingdom. Though it is the first book in Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, and its ending still leaves the plot open and unresolved so that the next two books can address it, The Golden Compass is an excellent stand-alone book, and I have never thought back to any story more often than this one. The story takes place in a world that is described as being "like ours, but different in many ways," and follows a young girl, Lyra Belcqua, as she goes around the world in search of her friend and other missing children who have been taken by a group called the Gobblers. She is accompanied by her daemon, Pantalaimon, and an alethiometer.
I picked up for one reason and one reason only, /r/fantasy would not shut up about it. Senlin Ascends is everywhere on /r/fantasy and the concept and its praise from this subreddit was a profound obligation for me to read it and man was I not disappointed. Senlin Ascend was so vibrant and that is the best way I can describe it. The Tower of Babel was such a great place that even though I felt it was a horrible place I’d still want to visit it just because it’s so interesting. Ringdoms was a perfect name for each area.
My favorite book is called ''The Cay'' and is about a boy and a man that are stuck on a deserted island. The boy becomes blind from looking at the sun and makes survival a lot harder. The book is set during WW2 and the genre is survival which is why it's so interesting to me. The boy was skeptical of the man because he was black but when he becomes blind he starts to appreciate the man and makes a strong relationship with him. Later in the book a hurricane hits the island and the man dies so the boy uses the skills that the man taught him to survive on his own.
Great writing and a fantastic read. The Spy Who Never Grew Up by Sarah Rees Brennan - I was so lost with who was who in this story I put it down. Frustrating. The Dungeons of Langeais by Becca Fitzpatrick - This is set in Becca's Hush Hush universe with a angel, a man nad two women they are tryng to protect.
