New Kid The new kid is a graphic novel by Jerry Craft that follows the main character Jordan Banks as he finds himself as the new kid in school. He finds and overcomes a lot of challenges like racism and stereotypes. A lot of people can relate to this book which is why it is so popular and adored by many. People can also find this a cool book while not a book trying to teach them a lesson and while this does have a message, it tries to target younger audiences with cool pictures and a younger protagonist to try to tell kids that it’s normal to experience these kind of things but that you need to be strong, stick up for yourselves and try to do the right thing. The novel, New Kid, addresses many issues that are relevant to young people today, …show more content…
Jordan and Drew get called the wrong names ( New Kid Chapter 5 pages 92-93) and when the teacher calls Drew the wrong name, she says he looks like Deandre ( the name she called Drew) and that he is trouble. ( New Kid chapter 4 pages 66-67). A lot of kids around the world experience racism and discrimination so it's good to make points in books to help stop racism and to make kids more confident and strong so they can stand up to themselves if they are getting bullied because of their skin color or what food they are eating. A lot of children also get bullied because of their culture and their nationality. Many other books talk about racism but a lot of kids like graphic novels, so books like New Kid, so it creates a fun book to read while touching on some topics that other kid books can’t while not being too harsh so kids don’t feel weird or uncomfortable. That’s why New Kid is the perfect book if you want to introduce kids to big topics that parents might be uncomfortable with sharing just because they want to introduce them but not scare them and to have an exciting …show more content…
When Drew was going to get in trouble because Andy tripped, Jordan stood up for him ( New Kid Chapter 12 pages 212-213) and when he did, other kids started telling the truth and when Drew had to clean the floors, they helped him even though they didn’t need to. Friendship is an important part of our life and Friends help us go through the most difficult times and are there when you need them. As a friend, you should always have your friend's back and should try to stand up for them when no one else would. Rember, friendship goes both ways so if you expect your friends to help you and care for you, you should be expected to do the same and even if they don’t ask for your help, check up on them and ask them if they’re okay and a simple “ How’s your day going” can make their day and give them a smile on their face. Lastly, you should try to keep communication with your friends even if you don’t go to school with them like how Jordan plays basketball with his friends from his old school. So, you should always try to keep in touch with your friends but if you have toxic friends or friends that use you, don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself and get out of that relationship, you should rather have no friends than friends that don’t treat you right and people who don’t care about your feelings and what your going
It has very complex and touchy subjects in the story for example the book talks about rape and racism. It's not always easy for teachers to talk about it in schools because of the language used in the text. For some students the words used and actions said in the book are hard to hear and can make them uncomfortable. The book also does not explain the n-word is a derogatory word. How black characters are shown in the book is hurtful to black students' image of themselves and they can feel if it's pointed towards them.
Lydia Maria Child wrote “Prejudices against People of Color” it was written in 1836. When slavery was one of the biggest issues with the United States. There was a big separation on those who were for slavery and those who were against. Lydia was a woman ahead of her time who wrote that even when slavery is abolished this is still a lot of racisms and human right issue with how African American are treated. Even when a slave is set free they still do not have any rights they are treated like they are less then human.
The graphic novel, Nat Turner, by Kyle Baker depicts images of a violent story derived from Nat Turner’s confessions. Nat Turner was a slave that led one of the bloodiest revolutions in all time. He may have influenced and have an impact on changing the strategies of some African American leaders including Martin Luther King, Fredrick Douglas, Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman. In his novel, Baker illustrates Turner’s life story and portrays him as a prophet who changes the outlook of slavery. Baker uses the interview from Thomas R. Gray to tell Turner’s gruesome confessions.
It is a well known fact that history repeats itself. This entangling cycle of repetition can be witnessed in the constant racist and prejudice state of American society. In The New Jim Crow, Michelle Alexander is able to bring to light the mistake people have been making through the process of repeating history, this mistake being the repeated use of racism and prejudice to successfully segregate society in order to accomplish a goal. Accordingly, during the time of slavery, a white lower class man by the name Nathaniel Bacon started a rebellion, uniting the poor whites and the blacks against the white elite. In response to this, the white elite used the repeated tactic of segregating whites from blacks and in their vulnerable state, gave
Fiction is still Alive Most young/old African American people experience some type of injustice or stereotype in their life. 6 out of 10 African Americans will experience unfair police treatment, according to, “The Denver Post.” The All American Boys is a book that can be a real life situation and good understanding to people who don't know how is to get treated differently. Despite the school boards recent sentiments regarding the lack of value that fiction provides, fiction should remain in the school curriculum due to my book All American Boys, the website The Denver Post, and and the social issues around the world. The book, “All American Boys” teaches you how to understand racism and stereotyping.
The book was very informative of life when racism was more apparent. I think that books like this show that standing up to racism is an option. It shows that even children of a younger age were involved in the situation.
In this moment, Jordan finally felt superior to his white peers knowing that his skin tone would be darker than theirs. However at the same time, Jordan also began to see how the color of his skin shouldn’t make him feel inferior. This shows that in the middle of the story New Kid by Jerry Craft Jordan begins to learn that it's ok to be different and to just be himself no matter what other people think of
I would recommend this book to all people with an age over ten, only because of the intensity and the language. One reason why I would recommend this book is because it makes you thankful for the way the United States of America is today. Fortunately, the inhumane mistreatment of dark skinned people is far behind us, and for decades now, blacks have been given the same opportunities as whites. I would also recommend this because it teaches history in the United States of America. I did not realize how bad the racial segregation was in the 1950s.
To have good friends you have to be a good friend, to be a good friend you need to be kind and helpful and always supportive. If you stay strong, be yourself and just keep going in life, the outcome will teach you a great lesson. Ponyboy learned a lot being alone with Johnny, he realized how much he loves his brothers and the gang and he didn’t want to live in the countryside after staying in an abandoned church there for a week. Ponyboy changed

Imagine having to leave childhood behind and grow up quicker than most people. This was the case for Cassie and the Logan children in Roll of Thunder; Hear My Cry, by Mildred Taylor, and Squeaky and her brother Raymond in Raymond’s Run, by Toni Cade Bambara. Cassie and her family are African-American and are living in the South, during the time of segregation. They are still not treated equally and have a much harder life than a white family living near them. The children have to understand how things are and how they have to act in order to cause less trouble.
We can all recall the one friendship that fell apart before our eyes. The one friend that said they would keep their promise. Friendships are strong bonds between two people. However, when they are made with such high expectations they could be the cause of fragile friendships that break.
