HFCS: how it relates to us
According to an article “The truth about Sugar” by Rachael Gorman, obesity rates in America have doubled over the last 20 years. Many studies have linked drinking sugary beverages with this increased obesity. An article posted by Harvard titled “Sugary Drinks and Obesity Fact Sheet” states that one out of three children in the United States are obese. Sugary drinks play a role in this rising epidemic. The article states that the average soda contains 240 calories and 15 to 18 teaspoons of sugar. Some of these drinks contain high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and sucrose (table Sugar).
There has been an ongoing debate on whether or not HFCS is bad for you or not. Both HFCS and sucrose are made of about equal amounts

The first step is to ask a question, which the Nurses’ Health Study did. The question at hand as stated early is whether or not different fruits give an individual a higher chance of getting type 2 diabetes. Then next step is to do some background research. This area could have been improved for the fact that there was none given in the abstract. The following step is to create a hypothesis which the study claimed that different fruits do induce a higher risk for type 2 diabetes. The fourth and possibly more important of the scientific method is to conduct the experiment. For this study they chose to do a longitudinal study, from 1976 to 2008 including both Nurses; Health Study I and II. The experiment involved a questionnaire that was sent out a very large sample pool of individuals. By having random questionnaires sent out it eliminates researcher bias one confounding variable. One problem with the random questionnaire for this study is that it did not reach a wide demographic because it only involved women. Researchers cut out other confounding variables by disregarding many of the participants if they did not meet qualifications. For instance any participant who had type 1 or 2 diabetes at the beginning of the experiment. They also disregarded anyone who did not have all the information of fruit or fruit juice consumption. A placebo would not further this experiment in any way since the experiment needs to track people’s everyday lives of their fruit intake. The researchers are not giving them anything they are just receiving the data every few years when they sent the follow up questionnaire. Since the study was conducted over such a long period of time, along with the questionnaires becoming more detailed each time, this study fits the criteria of valid length wise.
The fifth step is to gather all the data analyze it and come to a conclusion. After acquiring all the data from the study the conclusion was that different fruits do give you different chances of getting diabetes. Fruit juice had the highest chance of giving an individual type 2 diabetes while fruits like blueberries and grapes give an individual a lesser chance of getting diabetes.
Since fruit juices contain the “toxic-sugar” that Dr. Lustig had mention I do believe that this study supports his theory. This research relates to modern life because today there is an obesity crisis not just in the United States but in other places across the world. Any research or ways to reduce the epidemic is beneficial to us as the human race. We need to tackle unhealthy eating habits and try to make the individuals on this earth
I attended the event titled Unnatural Causes Bad Sugar on Thursday, October 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. The event centered on the ways in which many factors influence people’s lives and significantly impact health. The first part of the event centered on watching a short video that focused on the damage to health that Native American tribes faced after they lost their water. There was a large increase in the amount of Native Americans who got diabetes and who were dying. It was thought that biology and genes were one of the main causes behind the increase in diabetes, but in reality there were many other factors. Geographic location, social and economic class status, and income level has an impact on a person’s health.

The eating habit of our ancestors would be completely unrecognizable to many of us nowadays. We graze our way through the day, eating on crisps or chocolate and drinking sodas to keep us going. In the article “Remark to the NAACP National Convention” speaker Michele Obama speaks the participant of NAACP to promote fitness and better eating in a campaign against childhood obesity called “Let’s move”.
It does not matter the age of the person, obesity can put anyone at risk of much more deathly diseases. The population of people having type 2 diabetes has doubled between 1996 and 2007. About twenty years ago, it was said that only people under the age of 40 could only get this disease, but in the past 10 years it has increased tremendously in adolescents. While the frequency of type 2 diabetes has increased, it has also escalated very largely for many people of color. About 13.2% of African Americans, 15.9% of Native Americans and 12.8% of Hispanics have type 2 diabetes.
High Fructose Corn Syrup and Obesity If you could blame one thing for obesity, what would it be? Some scientists argue that it is high fructose corn syrup or H.F.C.S. Others disagree. Scientist has been having debates about the reason of the obesity epidemic.
Methodology The author utilized excessive methodology throughout his book during the Tuskegee Experiment Study. Throughout the study, the helping professionals had many challenges and made changes when conducting this experiment. During this time, the helping professionals had no legal guidelines or stipulations until the last few years of the study. In the book, there were several methodologies that were utilized during the experiment.
Sugar, which is in almost everything, is one of the biggest problems. As noted on, “Is Sugar Toxic”, Dr. Robert Lustig, the lead researcher says sugar links to a number of diseases from obesity to heart disease. He also states that 75% of these are preventable. Studies have shown that when we consume sugar, it’s equivalent to when someone does cocaine. Another study by Dr. Cantley has shown that sugar can help cancerous cells grow and multiply.
Intro It’s a sunny, warm day kids playing outside and healthy, well that was back then. It’s still warm and sunny but now, kids are inside glued to their electronics and not healthy. Why? What caused this?
That is why many propose regulating the purchases of carbonated drinks pact with sugar, or more commonly known as soda. One can of soda contains about 2.5 tablespoons of sugar, and on average, 9% of the daily calories consumed per person is from soda. Due to the high numbers of obesity in America, soda’s and other drinks high in sugar, should be regulated. Obesity can lead to many health problems. Some issues that can potentially occur because of what the person is eating include diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, body pains, and potential death (in fact, one article in The New York Times claimed sugar, more particularly soda, to “might just be the biggest killers via preventable disease in the country”
That Sugar Film is an interesting documentary following a man’s journey to discover the harmful effects of sugar on the human body. Damon Gameau uses his own body to try to show his audience that sugar is harmful. His goal with this documentary is to try to convince his audience to reduce the amount of sugar that they consume. Gameau shows that he is passionate about this subject by eating large amounts of sugar daily after having not had sugar for over three years. This potentially puts his body at risk.
Processed foods and beverages are the biggest sources of added sugar (and High fructose) in the diet. Sugar is very unhealthy and can have serious adverse effects on metabolism when consumed in excess. Sugar contains a lot of calories, with no essential nutrients. It also causes tooth decay by feeding the harmful bacteria in the mouth. For people who are inactive and eat a processed food, large amounts of fructose from added sugars get turned into fat in the liver.
