Pros And Cons Of The Articles Of Confederation

Before the Independent War, each state already had its own laws. Speaking from a certain perspective, each state could be seen as an independent country. After America won its independence from the Great Britain in the Revolutionary War, the new country needed a mechanism to unify the thirteen states to form a government. The Articles of Confederation was the first national constitution that was acknowledged by the thirteen American states that was submitted to the Second continental Congress on July 12, 1776. It was sought to be the solution to group the thirteen states to be a country.

Thus the nation’s leaders came together during the summer of 1787 at the Philadelphia Convention to draft the Constitution of the United States. The constitution was ratified in 1788. The Federalist Party had to gain nine of the thirteen states’ approval of the constitution to ratify it despite the goals of the Declaration of Independance. After the tyranny of the British rule, the new citizens of the United States wanted a severely limited government.

In 1777, the Continental Congress drafted the first constitution, known as the Articles of Confederation. These articles formed a loose confederation of the thirteen states as opposed to a strong and unified country. Due to that, the government soon began facing numerous difficulties under the Articles of Confederation. Under the Articles, there was only an unicameral governing body without any separation of powers. Likewise, since the majority of the power resided in the states, the central government was quite feeble.

The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution since the United States of America was formed. This constitution wasn’t helping the states and was causing many arguments between them. After Shay’s Rebellion, when the farmers got mad about having high taxes and heavy debts, even though Shay’s Rebellion didn’t succeed it proved that something has to be done to the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation were developed to unite all of the 13 colonies as a nation, rather than having them all govern their selves based off of population. The Articles of Confederation had created a very loose alliance of the 13 colonies or states as they will later be referred to. The Articles of Confederation also had been created due to the fact that the Declaration of Independence never stated the word, “nation” and this led others to believe after independence had been officially stated that the colonies would attempt to govern themselves. Furthermore, the Articles of Confederation were completely necessary in its making because the Congress had to lay a base government down for the colonies or an “example” government. The Thirteen Colonies had now been free for a while and had grown into a nation with an abundance of land with a strong sense of responsibility. The United States of America was not like the other nations found throughout the world. It differed though its principals and morals, it radiated a sense of comfort and freedom that was hard to find anywhere else. However, it still lacked a strong government that could support such an important and developing nation. The Articles of Confederation had its achievements that supported it; however, it also had its great shortcomings that made the nation doubt its support to the large nation.

Our ideals of creating a government where we do not have power to enforce laws, collect taxes, raise an army, or even regulate trade is not functioning. While some Americans thought the Articles of Confederation was good since it waged in a successful war for independence, many Americans concluded that under the Articles of Confederation, there were many issues formed such as providing limited central government, developing many economic problems, and foreign powers. “The framers of the Articles of Confederation kept in mind their complaint against Britain. Parliament had passed laws the colonists considered unfair. The new states did not want to risk giving too much power to a central government far from the people”(Pearson, 206). This shows how the Articles provided a limited central government that lead many Americans to disagree with the Articles of Confederation.

Following the Revolutionary War, America had just gained independance from Great Britain and needed to form a new government. The Articles of Confederation were established as an attempt to create a government that was unlike Britain’s. Unfortunately, the Articles of Confederation had several weaknesses. When in the process of repairing those weaknesses, the Federalists and the Anti-federalists formed. The Articles of Confederation were very weak as well as useless to America and because of this, the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists could not agree on a new type of government.

The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution of the United States. Although it was drafted by congress in 1777, it was not ratified by all thirteen states until 1781. Out of fear of creating a tyrannical government, the Articles of confederation actually allowed the states to be very much free and independent. Although that policy ensured a non-monarchist government, the liberation that was granted has its pros as well as its cons. From 1781 to 1789 the Articles of Confederation provided the United States with an effective government by giving the states freedom, however shortly crumbled due to the lack of stability.
