Project Management is an area of study that has many relevant applications within the marketing industry yet there is very little emphasis placed on it. If Project Management were to be applied to marketing Metrics would soar and timelines would shorten. Teams would deliver newer and better campaigns with increased efficiency and less hassle. This would go a great way towards increasing the competitive advantage of any marketing initiatives. In the past marketing agencies worked on a more functional (Silo) based plan however with changing trends more cross functional teams are being utilized. In today’s marketing world where creative content is so intertwined with production, it doesn't necessarily make sense to have so many separate silos. More agencies are replacing those silos with cross-functional teams, headed up by project managers or defined producer chains.
Strong project managers have always been needed in the agency, there may not have been clearly defined PMs, but there was always project management responsibility. It just wasn't always clear who was ultimately responsible for the entire project. Account people did one part, the creative director did another and production finished it out.
