Professional Competency Areas For Student Affairs Practitioners

Christina Funk, junior, established a new organization that will benefit incoming freshman and returning students in their academics, student involvement, and social life. Funk’s organization, Students4Students was created in the beginning of August and has already over 50 official members in this organization. Students4Students consist of mentors known as Wolves and mentees known was Pups. Mentors must have attended University of West Georgia for a least a year and obtain a 2.7 GPA or higher. Most mentees are freshman who would like guidance during their first year of college.

Objective One During my clinical day three, I demonstrated entry-level competence in professional nursing practice in caring for patients with multiple and/or complex unmet human needs. I addressed safety needs, safety in medication administration, effective communication, and surveillance for my patients. First, I addressed safety needs my ensuring the appropriate safety measures were implemented for the patients. Some of the safety measures included, wearing non-skid socks, wearing a yellow armband which indicated fall risk, keeping the bed in lowest position, two side rails up, bed locked, and the call light within reach.

Because of the diversity that exists among our student population, it is important to offer an education that meets those diverse needs. This includes fostering an appreciation for the unique qualities students bring to the school community. Through working collaboratively in the classroom, students grow both academically and emotionally as they achieve project goals. While some researchers have focused on both males and females in student affairs, Henry (2010) focused on African-American women. Henry (2010) purposed to add to the body of knowledge regarding African-American women in student affairs, as women student affairs are rarely researched and little information is available about their experiences. Henry (2010) interviewed three African-American administrators in student affairs regarding their experiences to answer questions regarding (a) what are some of the positive work-place factors for African American women in student affairs? (b) what are some of the work-place challenges faced by African-American women in student affairs? (c) do African-American women in student affairs experience or perceive racism in the workplace?

When students set out for higher education and prepare for their future they usually have an end goal in mind. When most students come to college, they typically have an idea of what degree to pursue or what they are interested in studying. In Sanford J. Ungar’s article “The New Liberal Arts” he quoted that “The responsibility of higher education today is to prepare people for jobs that do not yet exist” (657). However, whatever job a student ends up in is significantly helped through higher education. With this in mind, college students need to have the skills needed to adapt to any situation and perform in many different ways.

My goal in a child care facility would be to make sure to support the social development of the children as well as the emotional development too. Students not only need to gain the knowledge for the field that they will be working in, but more importantly they need the knowledge of basic life skills on how to think and react to life experiences. It is important for people to understand that knowledge is power, and knowing that it’s not all about you is one of the best realizations one can have. We are all here to collectively work together for some type of common goal. No one person is more valuable than the other. So the next time we are waiting in line in Walmart, we shouldn’t be cursing about how the cashier is too slow, or that they need to open more lines because we are in a hurry.

Identifying services that predict student academic success and persistence among TRIO student is important for staff and higher education leaders at Johnston Community College. Jones and Watson (1990) noted that retention or persistence issues are critical to institutional planning and funding. Planning and funding have been greatly affected by the student retention rates. The findings from this study will also help to provide pertinent information on how to improve services that foster student success and leadership skills.
