Nursing in America: How a nurse’s working conditions and work load are effecting patient care as a whole Ryleigh M. Kennedy Mill Valley High School AP Literature and Composition Mr. Shull May 9, 2023 Abstract This paper goes over how the nursing shortage is effecting patient care around the world. The nursing shortage is causing poor working conditions for nurses which is in turn effecting care they are able to provide their patients. With sources going back until 2003 and up to 2022, this paper provides statistics and quotes from registered nurses urging something to be done and sharing their experiences. This paper also provides solutions to this global issue and why it should be considered an issue to all of society.

As we have been noted the role and the scope of practice of the nurse practitioners in the healthcare system are unmeasurable. The nurse practitioners (NPs) play a tremendous role in providing healthcare to the people in the United States. Their presence has been recognized in developing the health care industry not only in the US but also globally. Despite the role that the NPs have played into the healthcare system, they still encounter some challenges that can impact their practice. One of these challenges is the NP autonomy of practice.

Recently the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) became a very important profession due to the major changes in the healthcare system and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) goals that focus on providing patients with affordable but quality care, improving patient health outcomes, expanding care to the underserved areas, and lowering the costs. It became apparent that over the years nurses played an important role in healthcare system. Community-Based Collaborative Care Network Program is a part of the ACA which emphasizes primary care, funds community health initiatives, and promotes quality care for more coverage for those uninsured in the U.S. and is more cost-effective to generate billions of dollars in savings for the United States budget. In the article “We Need More Nurses” by Alexandra Robbins argues we need more nurses in the hospital. Nursing shortage has been a common issue throughout the world. Right now, nurses all over the country are busy taking care of sick patients. Healthcare is continually evolving and changing. It seems like patient’s needs are becoming greater by the day. We’ve been told for years now that with the aging of the baby boomers the need for nurses will grow. These patients are often complex with multiple medical problems that need to be managed.

Critical Evaluation: 1- Transformational leadership In Nursing: personal life: Due to the continually metamorphic nature of this country's healthcare system, it's imperative for nurse managers to employ a transformational leadership style, which encourages adaptation to change. The transformational leadership style allows for the recognition of areas in which change is needed and guides change by inspiring followers and creating a sense of commitment. Adopting the qualities of a transformational leader will allow nurse managers to feel more comfortable and confident when engaging in the development of healthcare policies, the ever-changing components of healthcare technology, and the mentorship of new graduate nurses.

Nurses have an important role in the political process because they can offer their experience and knowledge to current healthcare issues. They can affect the political arena by actively participating in lobbying and creating an awareness for their cause. In addition, nurses play a role in patient advocators, so it is only natural for them to become involved in the political process. Nurses are critical for promoting health in the society. The profession is highly flexible, since they specialize in diverse operations in the medical field. Registered nurses, for instance, are responsible for the administration of medicine and inoculations to patients (American Nurses ' Association, 2000). Additionally, these professionals observe, record, and enlighten doctors of any changes in a patient’s health. Nurses interpret and evaluate diagnostic examinations to determine an individual’s condition, as well as making the necessary adjustments in patient treatment plans on their health progress.

1 Introduction Change is an inevitable part of life. In this ever changing society, it is important that nurses change practices in a bid to improve on quality care rendered to patients. “Nursing management is the coordination and integration of nursing resources to accomplish care and provision through application of the management process” stated Huber (2006) in her book. The quality of care is determined by not only the structure of the health system, but also the role of the nurse manager through the quality of education, training and competency. According to an article written by Draper, D.A. et al. (2008), nurses are on the front line of patient care and therefore can significantly influence the improvement of quality of care and ultimately enhance patient treatment and outcome. (2008) also argued that potential implications, such as; high level of documentation, staff shortages and nurses education and training can all have an impact on nurses’ involvement in providing quality of care.
