During the residency experience, there are many things that one should learn when making sure that he or she is effective as a counselor. When working with clients, it was challenging to find other ways to interact with certain clients. Every individual will not be cooperative with the counseling process. One client that could be remembered was the trigger client that was chosen. The client was a man that was chauvinistic and did not want to speak to me because of my sexuality. I did better than I thought, but I am concerned that the counseling process would be different in real life. It would be beneficial to learn ways to help the client to open up even when there is resistance. Another challenge that one may face not being knowledgeable of the many intervention. For example, when working with a client that was afraid of clowns, it was obvious that I was not fully confident in working with a scenario that I was not knowledgeable about. It would be useful learn about phobias and what could trigger an episode. …show more content…
I showed the client the respect that they deserved. During the role play, I did not self-disclose any information. This could have sabotaged the counseling process. As a counselor, I welcome growth. One thing that surprised me about the process was how much I would learn during residency. The days were incensed and sometimes draining. The experience gave me the opportunity to see how important self-care is to a counselor. The counselor has to make time for self-care regardless of the responsibilities that one has. This experience has validated my desire to be a counselor. I also learned that being an effective counselor comes from experience and research. I cannot expect to be experienced within six days of role playing. I had to keep reminding myself to not be hard on
The presidential selection process was also a problem during the Constitutional Convention. The Virginia Plan suggested that the president should be selected by Congress because its members had the best knowledge and understanding of how the presidential selection process worked. In Federalist Paper No. 68, Hamilton asserted that the “men most capable of analyzing the qualities,” hence the members of Congress, to select the president since they had enough information on the presidential candidates to evaluate and make a reasoned judgment on which candidate would fit best in the president position. Pennsylvania delegate James Wilson, on the other hand, opposed this idea and suggested that the president should be selected by ordinary citizens.
Section 1: Professional Development Plan For most of my life I have been motivated to help people so when I made the decision to continue my education at Walden University, I knew that I was ready for the journey. I am currently seeking a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I am expected to graduate in the winter of 2025. This paper was written on June 30th, 2023, with the intent of further understanding my motivations for seeking this degree as well as visualizing the type of counselor I want to be in the future. Throughout this paper, I also discuss what is expected of me throughout my degree program, counseling career, and overall professional development.
For this assignment, I was required to conduct an interview with a professional who has received his or her education and training as a counselor (LPC, LCAS, CRC). The individual I interviewed is a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist and a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate who works at the mental health and substance abuse clinic. The interview included questions about her education, training, current position, her functions, duties and responsibilities, the services this place offers, the clinical issues she deals with, and the interventions she provides in her work settings. Additionally, I inquired about her working relationships with other professionals employed at the clinic. The next step involved summarizing the information
I will admit that my biggest fear in entering this profession is hurting someone unintentionally by lacking the knowledge and tools necessary to assist them in the struggles that bought them into counseling. Though I understand that informed consent is critical in allowing the client to voluntarily enter into treatment, I also am fully aware that location, convenience and cost drive clients to seek help from counselors who may not be capable of providing services. This chapter indeed reaffirmed with me that I have only just begun the journey to what I have been called to
It seemed you were able to think about what the client wanted from you as well as how empathetic you were. I see that you had challenges because of the anxiety that you experienced and the distance of you supervisor. I also imagined how hard it could be to counsel those who seemed to live such a different life style than you were accustomed to. The thing that resonated the most is knowing that you can be flexible with the techniques that you use. It is what I want to do and I have to ensure that I am comfortable doing so.
Even if I didn’t have advice to share, I learned how important it was to be there for someone. In addition to this, I learned how much it meant for people to feel validated; all I had to do was say, “I
Thirdly the counselor expresses empathetic understanding, so the client can mirror and reflect their feelings and thoughts in the sessions. Experience is the major factor that make the client become strong, stern and except to life’s challenges. Often decisions are difficult to make in experiences.
As I learn more about counseling theories, I realize that it is important for a counselor to not act as an expert on a client’s life, rather, this role is solely
Additionally, as a counselor, it is important to be genuine with whatever feedbacks one presents to the patient and what one believes regarding the situation of the client. Mrs. Perez believes the more authentic and genuine he is with her patients, the more help he will be able to offer the clients. As a counselor, it is important to have a fine and professional interaction with one 's client but boundaries must be maintained. Through this, a counselor is able to demonstrate their focus on helping the patients by showing the client that they understand their problems. It also through such engagements that counselor is able to use the non-judgmental attention that does not require words for illustration in helping the patient.
Self-Evaluation on Counselling Session (One) Session start with a warmth greeting, by asking client ‘How can I address you?”, to be honest I felt nervous at the beginning of the session, too focus or particular on the name of client, client actually felt uncomfortable. I can just follow the flow and address whatever name client point out and start with small talk will be a good idea such as asking about his experience of travelling to the centre for his counselling session. Thereupon, I briefly explained the length of time of the session, confidentiality and the limitation. I believe that I deliver a clear message to the client.
I can know the actual response from the client or somethings may occur when in the actual counselling session, it helps me to have an experience to try to handle those problems, I believed that it is good for my internship or future career. Observation about the Group Dynamics The general group dynamic I observed during the class practice and presentation was that no one is willing to do the counselor. I believed that acting a counselor is very challenging for us, people who act as a counselor need to use many skills but if act as a group member can do what counselor said only, so people usually do not to be the counselor. And we always use some games to decide who was the counselor fairly, this was the way that we solve the problem.
Not being able to cope with certain situations in my life, turned to many problems and made it hard to live, happily. After receiving therapy with a certified psychologist for almost nine years, my outlook on life has completely transformed. I have learned how to confront my emotions in a healthy way and how to have a positive attitude towards my day, regardless of the trials that life throws at me. I have been able to develop a character that others have called selfless, caring, and determined to help others. The influence of a psychologist 's help has exponentially heightened my interest in aiding people in dealing with difficult situations and inspired me to pursue a degree in
Human beings are unique. Therefore, client-counsellor relationship is unique for each person. To ensure effectiveness of counselling,
Although I thought this would be easy for me, it never occurred to me that I was not doing it properly. Being in the position of the help helped me realize how hard it is to not give advice to your client. I had to learn that it is not my job to solve the problem, but to help the client solve their problems out by helping them figure out their emotions. I was also hard for me to figure out what to say without being redundant or going around in circles. Listening to the client made me fill that the conversation was going nowhere.
This week, the paper will reflect on personal growth and challenges experienced in the clinical work. It will also reflect on personal struggles in the process of building relationship with a client and potential multicultural biases. This week has been a productive week as two of my clients are preparing themselves to look for a job. As a graduate clinician noticing that the treatment unfolds into healthy changes in clients lives is significantly fulfilling. I was appreciative of the knowledge, skills, and awareness provided by the course at school.
