The themes of the piece we most clearly wanted to communicate to the audience included racism, loss, bias, betrayal and revenge. I feel as though the ones we communicated most were certainly racism and loss. We showed racism in Dorothy Field's behaviour and actions towards Heiss Dun, the young German soldier who was not even old enough to be fighting in the war. One of the themes we could've emphasised more in these particular scenes was bias. Although it was clear that Dorothy was racist because she believed that the English were the protagonists and the Germans were the antagonists, we did not entirely use this opportunity to prove that the Germans were not always the bad ones apart from in Cavell's monologue when she said, 'The war has brought out the worst in all of us... …show more content…
If we'd used this theme more to our advantage we could've shown a marginally less biased opinion of the war to the audience. We could've also used the themes of racism and bias more by having more than one of the Nurses be racist. Other than Dorothy Field, Matron only wanted everybody to remain focused on the tasks at hand, no matter what side the patients were from. Heiss could've been slightly more reluctant to be taken in by the English nurses, showing that the Germans would've believed that our side were the villains in the story, not them. Lydia Maria Child wrote “Prejudices against People of Color” it was written in 1836. When slavery was one of the biggest issues with the United States. There was a big separation on those who were for slavery and those who were against. Lydia was a woman ahead of her time who wrote that even when slavery is abolished this is still a lot of racisms and human right issue with how African American are treated. Even when a slave is set free they still do not have any rights they are treated like they are less then human.
Mrs. Wilson is an example of racial injustice in (presumably) the 1940s in America. Johnny and his African-American friend, Boyd, have just arrived after some sort of outing. Mrs. Wilson is then introduced to Boyd for the first time. As soon as Boyd enters the house, he is making jokes and being generally joyful, Mrs. Wilson sees he is carrying wood, and assumes that, because Boyd is black, he must have it oh-so-bad, and Johnny is being rude by making him carry it. This stereotyping, along with Boyd’s “thin” appearance, leads to the assumption that Boyd is weak and sickly, a common view at the time of he African-American community at the time.

Written in 1993 but set right after WW2, A Lesson Before Dying promptly displays the prejudice and discrimination that many people faced during the 1940s. Through his writing, Ernest J. Gaines demonstrates the challenges and struggles of being successful, back in a time where many black men were brought down to the level of an animal.
In the 21st century, Native American culture is largely represented by mascots. Issues of isolation, education, and alcoholism continue to plague Native American reservations, but these issues are largely ignored by the general public. Instead, much of the battleground relating to Native American rights has centered on where they are most visible--sports. In Erich Maria Remarque’s, “All Quiet on the Western Front” the soldiers face fear, hardships, love, trust, and death together during World War 1. The question is, why? All soldiers were clueless to the reason why they had to leave their families, friends, and loved ones, only to return home to suffer from the mental and physical pain afterward. The novel focuses on Paul Baumer who enlists in the German army and experiences the horrors of war while trying to survive in the trenches. “War Some More” by Sandra Osborne connects well with the novel in the sense that war is brutal and brings forth hatred without a solid explanation as to why.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee tells a story of racial prejudice during the Depression and how it is combated. The main development in the novel is that a Atticus, the father of Scout and Jem, has been appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a young white woman named Mayella. Many people in the town of Maycomb, particularly people involved with the case of Tom, have a negative attitude towards African Americans. Prejudice was a terrible issue in the South during the Depression, but Atticus Finch shows that racial injustice can be combated in two main ways, each having different levels of effectiveness.
