AIDS is the world’s leading infectious killer. To date, the illness has killed approximately 25 million people around the world. In the memoir Breaking Night, Liz Murray wrote about her mother’s slavery to cocaine and how it lead to her contraction of the HIV/AIDS virus and eventually to her death. Her mother’s death was only one of the difficulties that plagued Liz’s life from birth to age 18, which was the amount of time spanned by the memoir. Homelessness, hunger, and [something else] were enemies of Liz in her youth, however, she managed to heroically turn her life around and conquer the obstacles standing between her and a better life.

Ellie Wiesel was a Jew who was captured by the German Nazi’s during the Holocaust in 1944. He was only 15 years old when he was sent to the Concentration Camp. Ellie, his mom, his sister, and his dad was sent to the Concentration Camp in Auschwitz. In January 1945 Ellie was transported from Auschwitz to the camp in Buchenwald. He talked about how he remembered walking by the Crematorium and watching them throw babies into the ovens.

The film Tales of the Grim Sleeper ties into the topics we’ve discussed in sociology by covering topics such as race, class, drug usage, crime and justice and deviance. The film goes goes into detail concerning the story of the serial killer Lonnie Franklin and multiple topics come into view as the story progresses. Lonnie lived in a poverty ridden community with his wife and son. Lonnie and his wife were not very close and were never seen together. Lonnie was very close to his son Chris; Chris’ DNA is later used to convict his father and Chris will feel guilty three years after the conviction.

In Playing God on No Sleep, Anna Quindlen argues that motherhood can be difficult and overwhelming, because of the belief that God made mothers because He could not be everywhere. Quindlen is able to empathize and articulate why many mothers feel the need to be relived of the duties of motherhood. Quindlen believes “…[mothers are] meant to be all things to small people… (2001). However, she continues to insist that it is difficult to “be al things”, because of factors of being overwhelmed, stressed; and not having the opportunity to vent to friends, because more than likely they are experiencing the same stressors. She suggests that weight of motherhood was spread around families and towns, possibly reducing some of the added stressors of

I think the portrayal of woman in popular literature does not change much in the thirty years. In both the book The Natural and Christine, woman are used as a tool to depict the characteristics of the male main characters. In The Natural, the role of Memo Paris is to reveal the naïve and innocence of the main character Roy Hobbs. Memo represents evilness in the book and it affects Roy negatively. In Christine, the “strange car” Christine is presented as a female character.

"In Bed," an essay written by Joan Didion, talks about her own struggles with migraine that she inherited from her parents. Migraine is a neurologic illness that frequently results in a severe headache. Due to her inability to prevent migraines, Didion has learned to live with them. However, there are advantages to approaching this illness the way Didion did. Joan Didion had suffered from migraines since she was eight years old.

The novel When She Woke by Hillary Jordan is about a 26-year-old girl named Hannah, who is trying to earn her life back so that it is normal, but who really knows what normal is anymore and who gets to say when you reach it. Hannah has committed the crime of murder for abortion, to match the crime she committed her skin has been changed to red. Nevertheless, in Hannah 's society, your punishment is having everyone know what you did considering the colour of your skin represents your crime. Flipping her life around Hannah must fight for everything she wants, including the love of her family, but mostly her mother. Hannah is a red, a murderer, Kayla is another red and one of Hannah 's only friends.

Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, published in 1962, tells the story of men in a psychiatric ward and focuses on two characters called McMurphy and Bromden, and their defiance towards the institution’s system. A critical factor in this novel are the women. The 1960’s played a significant role in changing the norms of social issues, and the perfect idea of women was changing too. Women were no longer just stay at home wives, but had their own voice in society, and many people did not agree with these untraditional views. Kesey’s representation of women in this novel illustrate them in a poor light that makes it obvious that they don’t fit the ideal womanly persona.

Miranda Hill’s book Sleeping Funny is a collection of short stories that are brought together through wit of her writing and an unexpected series of events. Specifically, the stories “Apple”, “Petitions to St. Chronic”, “6:19”, and “Digging for Thomas” are relatable for readers and cover harder topics in a light and humours way. Each story is quite different from the next but can be linked together through motifs or character driven hardships. Although the stories are not directly related, “Apple” and “6:19” have a strong connection between themes.

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, The Great Gatsby, is full of themes of wealth, love, and tragedy. Also during the time this book was written, women’s suffrage had begun, so women were taking their first steps towards equality with men. The three main women characters in the novel: Daisy Buchanan, Myrtle Wilson, and Jordan Baker, all have things in common but can be vastly different; they reflect the view of women in the early 20th century. The Great Gatsby portrays the characters Daisy, Myrtle, and Jordan as stereotypes of women during the 1920s, seen in their behavior, beliefs, and their ultimate fate.

Just because he writes of the time period Washington Irving has been accused of misogyny. He may appear to show this trait in his stories, but he does not show a enthusiastic venture to misogyny. It may appear that way in the stories Rip Van Winkle and The Devil and Tom Walker, but then you get to the story of Sleepy Hollow. Washington Irving doesn't hate women, he just wrote of the time period that was expected.

“I Was Sleeping Where the Black Oaks Move” written by Louise Erdrich focuses on a child and a grandfather horrifically observing a flood consuming their entire village and the surrounding trees, obliterating the nests of the herons that had lived there. In the future they remember back to the day when they started cleaning up after the flood, when they notice the herons without their habitat “dancing” in the sky. According to the poet’s biographical context, many of the poems the poet had wrote themselves were a metaphor. There could be many viable explanations and themes to this fascinating poem, and the main literary devices that constitute this poem are imagery, personification, and a metaphor.

The image portrayal of women in this film is a way for the people in our society to see women as not having good standards. As when Waldo is first introduced to the film Darla instantly started gazing after him for being the rich, clean cut young man. Also Boys see girls as a scapegoat when it comes to their problems such as the scene when the club house burned down, and Alfalfa almost lost his best friend he says, “it all happened because I liked a girl” but it was really nothing to do with Darla that caused all of those events to happen it came from him not telling the truth and trying to hide her. One can also see the ideal role a woman should play in society. For instance, after the race Spanky did not expect Darla to be the one that helped them or be the one under the helmet.
