When we watch our television there are always broadcast about oil spills and poor air quality, and how their are communities suffering from these pollutants. It is easy to watch the screen and think,” Wow! I am so glad we are not in that situation”. But the truth is contrary to this statement, there are harmful toxins being released into everyone’s community that often go unnoticed by residents in the area.It was quite shocking to discover the pollutants that were being released into Sumner County. What pollutants are being released into the community? Who is responsible for the pollutants being released? What effects do these pollutants have on our quality of life? These companies release toxic fumes into the air we breathe, and in some cases dump toxic waste into lakes and rivers directly affecting the environment, aiding to poor air quality and toxic water. According to the EPA Sumner County ranks between the 80-90% bracket for being the dirtiest/worst for having water sources with impaired or threatened uses. With the high levels of metals in the environment it is an environmental injustice. Not only are humans affected by toxic pollutants, these chemicals also pollute the homes of many fish and birds that claim home to the lakes and rivers of Sumner County. We have to make sure our fish and birds live in clean water so they can promote diversity in the …show more content…
Planned obsolescence is a technique used by many corporations to keep their customers buying their product by making products that are intended to be thrown away. Corporate industries also use their power and wealth to influence politicians and their standpoint on environmental issues. in 2009 oil and gas industries spent $175 million on lobbying- eight times the amount pro environmental groups spent (Mooney). Conflict perspective also looks at environmental injustice claiming that, even though everyone is affected by environmental issues there are certain communities that are more affected. For instance, communities around the sites where mountaintop removal is being conducted are at higher health risk because of the close proximity to the blast sites and sludge impounds, even though everyone in America is affected by mountaintop removal. Rates of poverty are also higher in areas closest to hazardous waste facilities(Mooney).Symbolic interactionist look at environmental issues as a reflection of what we are told from the media. Greenwashing is commonly used in the commercialization of industries that promote themselves to be safe to the environment when the truth is that they are damaging the environment. The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity advocates that the process they undergo to extract coal from the Earth and then distribute it is a

The NAACP 's press release talks about the research report Coal Blooded, and how coal plants are being placed nearby low income and colored communities. This is causing an overwhelming amount of pollution in these communities, which in turn is hurting people 's health. The average income of people living in these areas is $18,400 and also 39% of these Americans are colored. Coal Blooded even talks about a plan to help change from high polluted energy sources for more eco-friendly sources. The closing of two power plants in Chicago helps support this plan.
Humans have become desensitized to pollution and degradation of the environment. The use of non-recyclable materials and disposing of waste irresponsibly has become something that we see every day, and we do not acknowledge as something harmful, because it does not directly affect us. However, there are both fictional and nonfictional examples of excessive use of resources and the misuse of materials that we do have, that can bring to the attention the damage that we are really causing. Two examples of this are Dr. Suess’ The Lorax, and Easter Island. Although very different, both the inhabitants of the town in the Lorax and Easter Island both contributed to degradation of the environment.
Bill McKibben and Derrick Jensen were born in 1960 in the U.S.A., and both have accomplished successful academic backgrounds. McKibben graduated from Harvard University in 1982, and Derrick Jensen graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a degree in Mineral engineering in 1983. Both are environmental activists and have written many articles and books. Two of their articles “Waste Not, Want Not” by Bill McKibben and “Forget Shorter Showers” by Jensen are published in the Bedford Reader book (557-567). When we analyze these articles both authors agree on consumers contribution to environmental pollution, but they have different points of views concerning whether individuals or industrialists cause more environmental pollution.
Environmental racism is defined as "the overwhelming likelihood that toxic-producing plants and toxic waste dumps are located where poor people, especially people of color live" (Eitzen, Smith, and Zinn 97). When I read this definition, I decided to do some research; what I discovered was alarming. According to Goldmanprize.org, "A recent report from the NAACP entitled 'Coal Blooded: Putting Profits Before People, ' found that among the nearly six million Americans living within three miles of a coal plant, 39% are people of color." Another interesting statistic I found was that 78% of all African Americans live within 30 miles of a coal fired power plant. Living situations like these are dangerous to the surrounding community; the chances
In recent years more poor, minority communities have been contending that their rights are being violated in disputes over where a plant or waste treatment facility will be built. Such environmental racism lawsuits rarely succeed. But now a federal appeals court in Philadelphia has upheld a group of citizens ' right to go as high as the federal bench to raise the issue. Other solution to this cause is to pass an act regarding its interest in environmental equity and by having EPA officials markedly it clear to oil refinery companies and command greater attention to their surroundings. Having greater regard for the environment will decrease the health concerns for the minority colored
Environmental protection is a major issue America is facing. Many destructive aspects, such as deforestation, pollution, and the emissions of greenhouse gases, are all working together to destroy our once flourishing environment. Although it’s natural for the environment to slowly degrade and revive, modern technology and uses of resources has sped this process to an overly rapid pace, making it difficult for the restoration process to occur. Due to this environmental dilemma, there has been major opposition in who should be playing a larger role, the government or corporations? Corporations are in part responsible for the destruction of the environment due to the amount of pollutants they release and use when manufacturing their products.
Drinking water sources have been contaminated with explosive methane, as well as other dangerous substances, such as benzene and arsenic, that can cause cancer and other serious illnesses. Toxic chemicals, as well as erosion and runoff from drilling operations, have fouled
Water Pollution: Harming the Human Health The release of chemicals affects water pollution in the Chesapeake Bay, affecting the health of the human population. There are several chemicals which are more common in the Chesapeake Bay than others. A growing concern for the Bay is the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus there is since it continues to grow each year.
During the rise of the environmentalism movement in the U.S., multiple instances of environmental tragedy led to both societal and legislative changes. More commonly was the rise of landfills containing toxic chemicals such as PCBs. As dumping continued, activists began to realize a trend in the placement of each site. This created the idea of environmental justice, where the societal issues of the treatment of the environment was combined with issues regarding the treatment of marginalized groups of different races and societal classes. The concept of environmental racism challenged the current ideals of the environmentalism movement that not everyone was benefitting equally from the movement’s progress.
Seldom and Hayduke are victims of increased exposure to environmental hazards such as toxic waste, pollution, landfills, and coal ash ponds, segregation of ethnic minority workers into dangerous jobs, and lack of access to parks or garbage removal (“Environmental Racism”). Many impoverished neighborhoods are forced to be located next to environmental hazards. For example, Louisiana is an impecunious state with "Cancer Alley” along the Mississippi River where 125 manufacturing plants release an abundance of hazardous waste resulting in cancer rates and respiratory illnesses higher than the national average (“Poverty”). Additionally, poverty-stricken people tend not to be well-educated and are less politically powerful to fight environmental injustices. Environmental racism originates from the notion of privilege, unequal and unfair rights or advantages of one group over another, such as the dominance of the wealthy industries and development companies over the rural people in the American Southwest in The Monkey Wrench Gang (“Environmental Racism”).
A Case Study on Polluter’s Dilemma I. Background/Point of View On a small plastic manufacturing, Jonica Gunson works as an environmental compliance manager. The company where she is working with is now facing a serious situation that needs to have a fast and decisive decision, decision whether to invest or not to invest money on new technology that will help decrease or as possible eliminate the level of toxic in the water which is flowing from the back of the factory up to lake. Though the company is compliant with the levels of emissions set by the Environmental Management board, the manager sees that environmental procedures for this specific toxic are sheathing behind logical evidence, particularly that there is a protest from a certain scientist that is publish in the newspaper.
In my area there has an escalated amount of pollution. The amount of pollution has affected the protected wildlife areas and parks. Polluted rivers are killing the wildlife, and animals are in danger because of the heavy amounts of pollution. A lot of people aren 't properly recycling their waste and that affects the environment, and the wildlife living in it, greatly. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation has been trying to raise awareness around pollution since 1967.
