Tamir Rice was a twelve-year-old boy playing in the snow at his local park, making the mistake of waving an air pellet gun at strangers- a mistake that would cost him his life. Police racism is a very big problem in America. The killings of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Walter Scott are other examples of police racism and brutality as well. Reasons behind police racism and brutality are simple. People still have a certain way that they think about people of color.

Fatal Police Shootings “27 percent of African Americans are killed by the law enforcement” (Cooke 1) most of these are from fatal police shootings. Fatal police shootings have become an epidemic. The majorities of fatal police shootings are justified as homicides or have not been fully investigated. Plenty of cases have been closed due to false accusations. The turning point occurred when Martin Luther King Jr., Rodney King and many more were brutality beaten and or killed by police officers.

In the early 1960s numerous inner-city riots occurred within the United States. These riots were triggered by law enforcement officers, the police, murdering multiple citizens. Police use of deadly or lethal force was not publicized until the 1960s following these events. Since the 1960s, any level of force exchanged between police officers and citizens must have probable cause (Scharf & Binder, 1983). Various scholars have attempted to study the use of deadly force amongst officer-citizen interactions.

When looking at the distinction between yourself and a police officer look at what differences stand between you. Which one of you has more power? Law enforcement and citizens each have their own explanation and definition what excessive force is and how it should be handled. There are different ways how law enforcement uses their excessive force which could have been different in the past from now. There needs to be various amount of changes in the police department to reduce the incident of excessive force. Excessive force is a current issue that needs to be reduced to justify every case correctly and avoid this hot controversy. All individuals in society have their own definitions and point of views on what excessive force is and how it should be handled.

The truth is that officer misconduct is a very real problem facing Americans. It is apparent that the vast majority of police abuses occur with the use of physical force. Most of these cases do not result in fatalities primarily because of this fact. A huge proportion of fatalities, however, are caused by the improper use of firearms by law enforcement. I feel like they should take away some police firearms like they should go thru a school are.

A 2012 investigation realized by the Criminal Justice Policy Review analyzed patterns of behavior in the police stations founding that no all police officers are responsible for the excessive use of force, and even between police officers differed about this point. Also, they found that officers with more education and experience may be less likely to use force. Another good aspect that was mentioned was the use of video cameras on police officer. The use of these device fell the rate of complaints from 60% to a nearly 90%. Some might claim that the evidence that Wehbey is showing about how police officers are looking for a solution to excessive use of force is not true because people still perceive actions that are against these claims.

Police brutality is becoming a continuing problem in the United States, which needs to be solved. The police academies need to teach their candidates better methods on addressing stressful situations. There are many cases where the police have gone too far with the civilians. For example, Of all 1,575 officers involved in reported excessive force complaints, 897 (56.9%) were involved in cases of physical use of force complaints which include fist strikes, throws, chokeholds, baton strikes, and other physical attacks(Packman,1). These numbers need to change.

Many people around the world deal with this not only the United States of America. This is a major conflict that needs to be solved. The society is being negatively affected by the police brutality. People are injured, harmed, or killed by police and they were not even armed with a weapon.

Police brutality remains a common yet controversial topic around the world. Police brutality is “the use of excessive and/or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians” (thelawdictionary.org). It’s a topic that segregates communities and makes each other their enemy. Specifically, a white officer has been the enemy of the black community. Unfortunately, the tension between police and blacks grew over the past few decades.

In my opinion and going based off some of the things that have transpired due to some deadly interactions with law enforcement I feel that discretionary powers should be in full effect in all situations excluding ones where a life can potentially be taken by an officer. I’m all for police discretion in areas in which you deal with juveniles, traffic stops, domestic situations, drug related offenses and any offenses of that nature due to the fact most of these situations and offenses aren’t usually violent nor as serious in nature as responding to say a hostage situation or an armed robbery in progress.
