Police Crutality In The Film: Straight Outta Compton

However, research demonstrates that often times men of color are treated harshly which leads to negative perceptions of police officers. Police brutality is a crime that is has been surfacing in the news recently. Some people are just starting to realize that these injustices against the black community really occur, while others are well aware. The recent shootings, different run-ins with officers being filmed while doing such harmful actions against African American men is an example of police brutality and, that reminds us that as a society work needs to be done to improve police and community relations. A black male cannot even walk down the street on a cold night because he might be a suspect from something or he may be of danger to the people around.

The film Boyz N’ the hood follows the lives of a group of young African American men growing up in the hood where poverty, crime and violence are rampant. The three main characters are Darin (Dough boy), Ricky (Darin’s brother), and Tre. In this this film there are many schools of criminology’s that help explain the roots of the criminality portrayed.

These men produced songs concerning real experiences, murder, drugs, police brutality, racism and other brutally honest, realistic issues. They called it “reality rap,” as it was a true depiction of communities and their lives. One of the main focuses of this movie was the victimization and harassment of the black youth caused by police forces. This is depicted in the scene where the NWA are playing in Detroit and the police warned and told the group not to play the song, “F*** Tha Police,” but the rappers did anyway. The group of men were chased off stage by the cops and thrown to the ground of the parking lot and into a police car.

Police racism is a very big problem in America. The killings of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Walter Scott are other examples of police racism and brutality as well. Reasons behind police racism and brutality are simple. People still have a certain way that they think about people of color.

Experiences such as these have led to a domino effect in the African-American community, where if one person has a negative personal experience with the police it will be shared with friends and family and they will also have disdain for law enforcement. To them, the police do not see high hopes for African Americans. “If an African American had fancy clothes or had a lot of money their first thought would not be that this person worked hard but more along the lines of this person has been selling drugs” (Brunson 2007:85). Also, the police officers are seen as crooked by African Americans because they have been known as lawbreakers instead of law-enforcers (Brunson 2007:85).

There is a point in everyone’s life where they are scared of a police officer pulling them over. The fear is usually getting a costly ticket or taken under arrest; However, darker skinned citizens now have to worry about police brutality. Police brutality is the use of excessive and unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians. Over the years, the country has been exposed to the truth about what minorities face when pulled over by a racist police officer. Most of the victims from the police mistreatment are from minority groups, therefore, race plays a key role in police brutality.

For me there are many reasons to why I think police brutality is apparent in our community. One of the biggest reasons is because police man and woman are scared when they 're in certain situations I think to fix this problem the police departments all around America should start training these police men and women how to be calm cool and collective when it comes to situations like this. Also, looking back at the Michael Brown case I think that the policemen should be fired and I feel the police department should personally apologize to the family and try to help them with any losses and any financial problems they have in the near future because of the death. The Police Department do have reasons for why these events occurred. The police say they were either getting attacked or they felt that they were being disrespected.

African Americans complained about police brutality but there were not cell phone cameras to capture the officers’ actions. So, if the case went to court it was a “he say she say battle”, and the police officer will win that battle. Unless you have experienced police brutality or racial profiling (DWB), you wouldn’t understand their complaints. So far in the year of 2015, 66 unarmed African Americans have been killed by police authorities. Ever since the death Michael Brown in August 2014, the world has become much more aware of police brutality. According to wisegeek.org, police brutality is “a form of police misconduct in which officers engage in an excessive use of force.” Police brutality against African Americans is an issue that has been causing a lot of controversy in the past year. This issue needs much more awareness than ever before, since there have been many startling cases during and after the Ferguson protest.

This report is showing light to the communities’ response to police brutality particularly in the black communities and also their encounters with police officers. Police brutality is physical violence and great cruelty demonstrated by a police officer. Police brutality and misconduct have existed for many decades and it even has been broadcasted in news stories over America, but nothing has changed. It has happened predominantly to African Americans in lower-income states. Police officers are given slaps on the wrist for taking a life or injuring an innocent person.

Lord action said "power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely". The corruption of power has been a concern for centers .Demonstrated in Arthur Miller's "The crucible" power in a town or society has always been manipulative. In the play Paris takes advantage of his power in the town as the church minister to manipulate the story of the girls dancing and employ his own personal opinions of the accused . In the same way, some members of today's police forces use their power in their positions to manipulate courts and societies view of them. Corruption of power is when a person of power can be persuade to a decision or if a person of power is able to get special treatment due to having their possession.

Racial profiling is a serious problem as we have witnessed in the last few years in cases such as Oscars, Trayvon Martin and Sandra Bland. An even more serious issue is the ability of our law enforcement to get away with such heinous crimes. Oscar was guilty of committing a crime by fighting, yes, but the officer did not know who the suspect was and assumed Oscar was involved. Once he made the assumption of Oscar’s involvement, he then proceeded to speak toward Oscar with uneasiness and prejudice. From what the film shows, there were no witnesses so the officers had no basis of arresting Oscar and his friends.

Police brutality remains a common yet controversial topic around the world. Police brutality is “the use of excessive and/or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians” (thelawdictionary.org). It’s a topic that segregates communities and makes each other their enemy. Specifically, a white officer has been the enemy of the black community. Unfortunately, the tension between police and blacks grew over the past few decades.

Police brutality is when a police officer uses any type of force on someone that exceeds the necessary amount to accomplish a lawful police purpose. The force doesn’t have to just be physical, it can also be physiological harm through intimidation tactics. So in simpler terms, police brutality is when a police officer uses more force then what they should use to stop a person or animal. There is some ways that we can help prevent police brutality, one of the ways we can help prevent it is by giving police better training in a nonviolent way. This is especially important when dealing with violent animals.
