Although the two both enjoy hunting, both of these characters General Zaroff and Sanger Rainsford differ from each other in countless ways. The distinction between the two are evident. In ‘’The Most Dangerous Game’’ General Zaroff is cruel and unwitty, Zaroff finds killing innocent humans that wash up on shore--enjoyable. Rainsford wouldn’t kill innocent human beings, nor would Rainsford find joy in doing it.

Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” is a short story in where two experienced and intelligent hunters both meet and begin a very dangerous game. Throughout the text we come across a dark suspense which ends in one man’s victory and the defeat of an undefeated man. Rainsford, a hunter who is traveling with a friend through a dangerous island known as “Ship-Trap Island” when he suddenly falls into the sea and must swim to that mysterious island for shelter. There he is welcomed by General Zaroff, a hunter and comes to discover that he has lost the thrill for hunting animals and has now created a new “animal” to hunt, humans. Rainsford is forced to play this dangerous game with the General in order to stay alive.
The transformation begins when Rainsford sees himself as similar to the animals he hunts. As he attempts to escape Zaroff, Rainsford compares himself to the things he has hunted using the different strategies for self-defense he had once heard about in a fable. ,“‘I have played the fox; now I must play the cat of the fable’” (69). As Rainsford becomes the prey he usually hunts, he gains a deeper understanding of their fear and their need to strategize quickly, as well as the battle they face between their instincts and their mind. This newfound understanding of his prey’s emotions gives Rainsford the ability to empathize with his prey. Rainsford’s increase in empathy towards prey is shown once again after he wins the game.

Now he is being hunted on this island and trapped in general Zarroffs mansion. He now knows how animals feel to be hunted, but they have no feelings so it's not the same he says. After what seems like ages of being hunted he turns into the hunter to hunt general Zaroff.
Rainsford is initially shown to not show any empathy to the wild animals he hunts. Zaroff is no different, with him declaring, “I hunt the scum of the earth: sailors from tramp ships--lassars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels,” (9). Zaroff hunts humans who have the unfortunate luck to arrive on Ship-Trap Island. Zaroff gives no second thought about hunting humans because he finds them to be the perfect sport to hunt, and finds pleasure in hunting them. Rainsford is a big game hunter who falls off a boat near the island of General Zaroff, a big Cossack general who is looking for an alternative to hunting dangerous animals but with a twist. Our protagonist Rainsford ends up on an evil island called ship trap island. While on this island he meets Zaroff and learns out why the island is considered evil, Zaroff hunts people on that island. Some of the main reasons the game isn't fair are the weapons each player gets aren't equal, the “prey” doesn't know the island as well as Zaroff does, and Zaroff is considered to be the best hunter in the world.
General Zaroff is different, to say the least, in Richard Connell’s book, “The Most Dangerous Game.” Rainsford is stranded on a deserted island, or so he thinks. Rainsford comes upon a mansion that is owned by General Zaroff. He knows of Rainsford, who is a renowned author of a book about the hunt, as well as everything and everywhere Rainsford has hunted. Initially, Rainsford feels that animals being hunted do not understand or feel the terror that a hunter puts upon the animal. He thinks he will always be a hunter and does not care if the animals have an understanding of being hunted. Then when he meets Zaroff, the tables are turned and now Rainsford is being hunted. Rainsford later finds out that the General is no normal game hunter, but a hunter of the people that land on Shiptrap Island. Later in the story, Rainsford is then hunted by the General, yet lives to be freed from the island.
