The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler exploits the corruption and the absence of justice that was present in the 1930s. The novel is set in Los Angeles, which at the time was full of scheming city workers. The combination of dynamic and static characters in the story leads the reader into a whirlwind of murders that are unavenged. “Good-guy” detective Phillip Marlowe, is seen as a modern-day knight, left to slay the dragon and rescue the damsel in distress. However, the inexplicable amount of “dragons” that Chandler presents in the novel hinder Marlowe from being able to accomplish his goals without obstacles. Chandler produces the classic detective novel through his use of conniving criminals, corrupt police, and characters that are slighted by the actions of those in their lives. The novels chief detective, Philip Marlowe, is unable to eliminate every criminal that crosses his path, much to his dismay. Although most of the offenders are apparent from the beginning of the novel, some are not revealed until towards the end. Consider mob boss Eddie Mars; well known by the police officers, along with his hitman Canino, yet no one seems to do anything about it. The absence of action is not a result of ineptitude; it is merely from the mob having control over everything, spanning from bootlegging to covering up murders. “But Chandler did more than use Mars ' character as a unifying thread; he also increased his importance by shifting the moral responsibility” (Rabinowitz 1). Envision a life where you are constantly cursed for something that isn’t your fault. John Ball has demonstrated the intense discrimination of 1960s America through his novel, In the Heat of the Night. Virgil Tibbs, a primary character in the novel, is a respected homicide detective from Pasadena, California. And during a stopover to his trip to Washington, Vigil Tibbs was involuntarily involved in solving the murder of the wealthy conductor, Enrico Mantoli. Despite the obstacles of determining the true killer and consistent discrimination towards his dark skin, Virgil Tibbs has proven himself in the narrow-minded town of Wells, Carolina.
In this series, it is not detectives who solve the crime, rather it is a group of attorneys and students getting together to prove their client is innocent. It does not necessarily matter if this client is innocent, the main goal to make it seem like they are. In process with steps of deduction and evidence they come to the root of what really happened to figure out if their client is indeed innocent, hence why it can easily be mistaken for crime-fiction. However, ‘The Twenty Rules for Crime Fiction’ states that ‘The detective novel must have a detective in it; and a detective is not a detective unless he detects. His function is to gather clues that will eventually lead to the person who did the dirty work in the first chapter’(Van Dine 1928: para.7).
The genre of crime has also been challenged by the texts inclusion of all aspects of Eric Edgar Cooke’s life, as his past and character development

The Cambridge Dictionaries Online defines sleepaway camp as “a place where children can go to stay without their parents and do activities”. As someone who never gone to sleepaway camp, I have a somewhat biased view of sleepaway camps as something that is not healthy for children, but as a writer, I have done research on sleepaway topics to see how people today in the 21st century view it. When a child goes to sleepaway camp, they have a chance to meet kids who are different from friends in their hometown, but on the other hand, they miss valuable time with their parents that they don’t get during the school year especially if at least one of the parents don’t work at a full-time job. Parents can do as much research as they want to the camp they could be sending their children to but they there
There are millions of reasons one prefers not to spend their valuable time at Yosemite. No internet, no cellular connection, treacherous drive, very limited civilization, and very unpredictable weather are few of the many excuses I have heard. However, there is one reason why everyone would go. It is the serene beauty Yosemite has to offer that is a getaway from the stressful lives we all endure. It is so generously picturesque, it stays in our mental cameras forever.
The ideal characteristics within Sam Spade In Raymond Chandler’s essay, “The Simple Art of Murder,” he expresses his ideal hero, “If there were enough like him, the world would be a very safe place to live in, without becoming too dull to be worth living in.” With this, Sam Spade in Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon fulfills and embodies Chandler’s description of a hero and hard-boiled detective through his independence from others, toughness through opposition, and solemnity to his morals and values throughout the novel. Sam Spade’s independence is a key factor that fits Chandler’s description of the ideal hero.
2 Sleep Deprivation in the Nursing Profession Sleep deprivation is known as a condition of not getting enough sleep that can affect the brain and cognitive functions. "It occurs when a person sleeps for fewer hours than necessary over multiple days or week" (Eanes, 2015). When we think of nurses we are reminded of people who promote the health of others. However, many are unknowingly compromising their own health by working those 12-hour shifts. Many times, its more than 12 hours when they are finally able to go home.
In the novel The Big Sleep, by Raymond Chandler, there are many conflicts between two characters that are subtle and do not feel like conflicts, but it is evident they are through his use of similes and metaphors. The scene when Carmen sneaks into Marlow’s apartment and waits for him naked is one of the better examples of these scenes when a subtext battle exists. Chandler first sets up the idea that Marlow is meant to be the knight in shining armor by echoing the earlier scene when Marlow first steps into General Sternwood’s home. The scene Marlow walks into when he enters his home is Carmen lying under his covers, her “tawny wave of hair…spread out on the pillow as if by a careful and artificial hand” (Chandler, 154). The book The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler is seen as the archetype of a Hard Boiled Fiction book. This genre describes unsentimental stories that are heavy in violence, corruption, and flippant humor. In The Big Sleep private detective Philip Marlowe is hired by the wealthy General Sternwood to stop a blackmailer while also finding the whereabouts of Rusty Reagan. Film Noir was derived from Hard Boiled Fiction with many of the same characteristics such as a femme fatale, a conflicted hero, and a variety of new characteristics like shadows and use of guns. The movie Casablanca directed by Michael Curtiz is a Film Noir and in the movie a wealthy bar owner named Rick Blaine, gets his world flipped upside down when his past lover Ilsa Lund shows

Sleep Journal and Reflection Paper Amber Ivy American Public University System Before, during, and after the logging of my sleep journal, I learned an abundance of information about myself in accordance to the dreams I had been having. As soon as I woke up for the day, I wrote as much as I could remember about the dream/ s I had.
The authors of the Golden Age shows their faith and belief in the detectives (emphatically vulnerable detectives). The detectives in these stories dominate the plot and solve the mystery case by influencing the perspective of the reader. The detectives mostly are self-conscious and Golden Age does not expect the reader to solve the crime ahead of the detective. They are decidedly unaggressive, non-god like, nondominant and do not exude ‘macho-like’ qualities of a ‘real he-man’. In the Detective Fiction, detectives fall into three broad categories; amateurs, private investigators, and the professional police.
