There is an overwhelming mentality that gun ownership is an American’s God given right and, while it is their constitutional right, they will not be advised, directed or even considerate of any changes in gun possession laws. Despite evidence proving the contrary the American people believe they are a safer country with firearms, this is emphasised in one of the NRA’s notorious taglines, ‘The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun.’ Gun ownership, however, can be properly regulated as demonstrated by Canada’s gun laws. While guns are not prohibited, the measures taken to ensure gun safety greatly reduce gun related violence as seen on the graph …show more content…
Ensuring that all gun holders have a registered licence, adequate education and training and a genuine manner is the first step in reducing gun violence. In 1990 The Crime Control Act was passed outlining criminal penalties for possessing or disarming a firearm on school grounds. In 1994 the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act imposed a background check and a five day waiting period before an unlicensed person could be sold a firearm. Following this, in the same, year, the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (commonly known as the Assault Weapons Ban) was passed banning the importation of firearms or large capacity magazine clips. Despite law enforcement mass shootings and incidents of gun violence continued to occur all across America with President Obama attempting to make change as recently as 2013. Requirements to obtain a gun are much stricter in Canada while still allowing citizens to bear arms legally. Gun violence in Canada, by comparison, is a third of what it is in America with less than one thousand deaths per year and a declining rate of armed robbery. The measures in place to procure a licence are listed below with America’s requirements listed as a

There are permits that you have to get before you can purchase a gun. There is also a concealed carriers permit you can get if you are in a domestic violence relationship. Canada is talked amongst other countries throughout the world as a safe, secure place to live. Majority of people do not know the heinous crimes that take place in Canada daily, especially whilst using a gun. Canada does not come close to the United States when comparing mass shootings, death by a gun, or homicides using a gun; although, the gun crimes in Canada are not improving. While Canada has more stringent gun laws than the united states, gun control in Canada should still be improved for citizen’s safety. Canada is often praised for having more efficient gun laws than the United States, but most people do not know that Canadian laws too, have much room for improvement.
‘’Guns are responsible for over thirty-three thousand deaths in the United States annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).. In 2014, the CDC reported that 11,008 of the 15,872 homicides committed in the United States that year involved a firearm. Of the 42,826 suicides reported that year, 21,386 involved a firearm. These statistics have inspired efforts at the federal and state levels to enact gun control legislation to reduce crime and violence’’(‘’Gun Control’’). According to the statistic guns are held for over 33,000 deaths in the United States.
On, February 14, 2018, a mass school shooting in Florida got the nation’s attention, however, gun violence has always been an issue, and it is only getting worse. Now people are saying there needs to be something done, and there are many that agree. Starting off there should be stricter gun laws, because in today’s world it is too easy to get handguns and assault rifles. With, the capabilities a firearm holds, such as taking people’s lives there must be stricter restrictions that could help cut down the gun violence and save lives. Increasing the age of purchasing a firearm would be one step.
I think it is clear that America’s lenient Gun Laws have no doubt been a huge factor on the staggering amount of gun violence for a long time. I do believe, however, in people’s rights to defend and arm themselves, it is part of their constitution, I just feel that it is necessary that the laws regarding the 2nd amendment need to be reinforced and should introduce some restrictions to ensure that only the people who are mentally capable of wielding a firearm, without causing harm to society, should be allowed to acquire one. I do also recognise that there are already a staggering number of guns in the possession of the general public, and I feel that the only way to tackle this issue is cultural change in America, changing the views of individuals on the idea of guns, but change is always
Gun Control Gun control has become a polarizing and controversial issue around the globe. There have been many reported issues of mass shootings both in schools and in the public, making it a hot button issue. Proponents argue that, if the government strictly controls the ownership of guns, such tragedies can be prevented. Most Americans have an obsession with guns because the law allows them to do so. Therefore, they are always ready to scoff at anyone trying to control gun ownership.
Alexis Clarke Professor Frank English 110 29 October 2015 Gun Control Will Not Eliminate Crime The big issue of gun control in the United States, is that many people believe that it takes away the 2nd Amendment rights, which is the right to bear arms. Citizens of the United States are promised the the right to bear arms in the Constitution, and by applying gun control laws takes away that same right. Crime is high enough in cities with very few laws pertaining to gun control, but taking guns away from people who are registered with license will not solve the problem either. Placing more limitations on gun owners, particularly responsible gun owners, will not reduce gun violence.
The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.
Guns are just a tool, like knives and hammers and it completely depends on the people on how they use it. People who support guns and arms say that the Second Amendment secures individual’s right to carry guns with them and that gun rights is needed for self-protection, and was intended for military to have peace and defend the country if needed (Spitzer, 70). Most of the Americans use guns as a source to protect themselves and they believe that gun ownership prevents crime. A study conducted on November 26, 2013 showed that bans on weapons did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level (Lane, 5). Moreover, even if the rules and regulations are executed on gun control, not all criminals obey the law.
Some people might say that we need a gun to protect ourselves in the United States, but there are actually various ways to protect ourselves instead of using a gun according to the article, “How Americans Protect Themselves from Crime.” Transition to Conclusion: before the government legislates about the gun control law, we need to be the spearhead that is awake to this problem deeply and carefully. Restate Thesis: I am convinced that the entire civilian should not own guns to prevent the gun violence, and only government officers must be able to own guns. Review Main Points: we realize that erroneous gun possession contributes to horrible gun accidents.
Instead of banning or limiting guns, the evidence will show that removing the current restrictions and targeting individuals instead of guns will be a more effective process. The topic of gun control has two polarized opinions. One such opinion targets the individuals responsible for the crime, instead of just the weapons. John Moorhouse and Brent Wanner tackle the issue of gun control in their article “Does Gun Control Reduce Crime Or Does Crime Increase Gun Control”, which was published in 2006 in the twenty-sixth volume of the Cato Journal. These researchers looked at the effects gun control laws had on violent crime and gun violence in the individual states.
In Vancouver, guns are tightly restricted and as a result, they have much lower murder and assault rates. This brings about the question on whether laxer restrictions on guns are leading to more firearm based crimes. Out of the 34,000 plus gun deaths a year in these cities, only 300 of them are people shooting an intruder. The threat of being attacked has struck the people so hard that many women are even beginning to arm themselves. All of these deaths and injuries have an overall cost of four billion dollars a year to the American health care system and everyone pays for it whether it be through taxes or increased
Owning guns in the United States is not a novel concept. What seems to be changing is the awareness of the American people of the dangers guns possibly pose; heightened awareness brought on by news breaking stories about large mass shootings have sparked major controversy in regards to the nation’s gun regulations and accessibility. In a Ted Talk given by Dan Gross: Why Gun Violence Can’t be Our New Normal in Vancouver, British Columbia, Gross boldly states his unwillingness to accept gun violence as a societal norm in the US and in his Ted Talk argues that gun violence may be greatly reduced if guns were managed and regulated properly, and by putting in place Brady background checks nationwide to ensure that guns will truly be kept away from
Topic: Ownership of Guns for non-professional reasons should be illegal in the United States General Purpose: To argue. Specific Purpose: The specific purpose of this speech is to argue for outlawing private gun ownership in the United States. Central Idea/Thesis Statement: Private ownership of guns in the United States should be illegal. Various specific reasons are presented to support this statement: (1) Banning private ownership of firearms, and, their distribution, would save a large number of lives that are lost as the result of gun violence.
To begin with, the second amendment of the US constitution gives citizens the right to carry or possess a gun. As a result, gun violence in America has increased drastically over the years due to guns being utilised in a reprehensible manner and people getting wedged in the crossfire, hence why stringent law enforcements need to be put in place regarding guns in the US. “Since 1982, there have been at least 61 mass murders carried out with firearms; in most cases, the killers had obtained their weapons legally”.
