Animals are just as intelligent and brilliant as humans are and they should be trained not just only to behave well, but to help people who need assistance such as some with a disability, people who might be blind, or deaf in some cases. There are people in our community who need assistance and these animals can help a lot of people. For example, our animal trainers will train dogs to learn how to walk someone who is blind or how to rescue someone if they are in crisis. As a result, people will start to depend on dogs for their own safety and whenever they need their guidance. Similarly, cats can also be trained and assist people in several ways such as helping someone who is unable to walk. These animals are more than capable of doing simple things such as doing tricks. As I drive around Phoenix with my puppy best friends, Sophie and Paco, there is not a single worry in the world for us. Sophie, with her long, brown, sun kissed fur, bobs her head out the car window as she enjoys the fresh breeze flowing through her fur. Paco rests his little head on the window that is halfway rolled down, as his wet tongue absorbs the wind. On our weekly car rides, my best friends and I pass by a building that has signs with dogs and cats all over. This building is a shelter for animals that are not so fortunate like my two furry friends.

Alfred A. Montapert once said, “Animals are reliable, many full of love, true in their affections, predictable in their actions, grateful and loyal. Difficult standards for people to live up to.” So, why do they deserve to live on the streets or in a shelter? For many animal lovers it is difficult to understand why the number of unwanted animals walking the streets every day is so large. In central Texas, there is a growing concern about the ever-increasing number of unwanted cats and dogs.
Service animals are individually trained to perform tasks and do work that mitigate their handlers’ disabilities. Service animals are much more than highly trained companions. Working as part of a team with their human partners, service animals help them attain the safety and independence from which their handlers’ disabilities would otherwise limit them. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protects the rights of people with disabilities to be accompanied by their service animals in public places, like businesses, restaurants, grocery stores, hotels, etc.
