Personal Statement: A Career As A Social Worker

In ten years from now I see myself on my way out of college, and working as a social worker. My long term goal to help me get there is after getting into a good college, and I would at least stay 4 years in college. While I 'm in college I will take as many classes as I need to get a good education about my career and understand everything the best I can, Also around the second year in college I will find a job some what close to a social worker and work there for the rest of college after i’m out of college I plan on getting a job as a social worker and maybe in a relationship. My passion for helping and supporting those whose economic and financial standings have hindered their growth in our society, has driven me towards social work. I feel I have exhausted every possible avenue in my current degree field. Pursuing a master’s in Social Work, will give me the diversity that I need, while aiding me in bringing my dreams of working more in depth with clients, by helping assist them with their individual needs and issues to reality. I had to re-evaluate myself, as well as my career, and that is when I came across social work. As a social worker, I was going to be able to work with kids in every different type of environment, as well as impact the kids which is what I always wanted to do. As a career goal in social work for the five years following graduation would be to work in an agency where I will be most needed and most productive. As a social worker, I not only want to help children I also want to make a difference in their lives, homes, and the system in general.

When I realized that I wanted to be a social worker, I was in my junior year of high school. I knew I wanted to help people, children especially, but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to go into. I thought I wanted to be in Neonatology or another profession like it. When I first witnessed a social worker, I was getting a treatment in the hospital and saw a social worker working with a family who child had a broken pelvis.

I hope to provide support and medical social services to the elderly population. I realize that senior citizens sometimes struggle with unique age-related health issues and debilitating diseases that make it hard to pursue fully functioning lives. As a social worker I’d help elderly individuals and their families examine their needs, and determine how to make those things happen. The elderly sometimes also endure loss of family support, lack of mobility, depression, abuse and loneliness. I hope to address the daily battles facing our elderly by helping them maintain their independence and dignity.

Health and social care is something that I have always been passionate about. Because I have studied health and social care for the last four years I have regularly met a lot of the most vulnerable members of society through past work experiences. Through past placements I have worked with children who have special needs. This helped me develop ways of communicating with the children this could be through sign language. Because my Aunt is deaf I have taught myself basic sign language in order to communicate with her effectively.

In the following paper, I will be discussing both the interest I gained for social work as well as my personal values. There will be much about my beliefs and life history. My mindset is everchanging, yet I am dedicated to spending the time on this path and journey of social work. The amount of change I have undergone throughout the developing years of my life have led me to the certain values I carry with me now. At the time, I was an almost mid-life career changer who was leaving corporate America after 11 years. Unsatisfied with current job, I wanted to start a career where I could make a difference in people 's lives.

Childhood should be be filled with memories of happy times, love and warmth. Sadly not every child is blessed with a stable home life and parents who care about the overall well-being of them. Child welfare social work is a field of social work that makes sure the child’s needs are met. Being a social worker you work with children and families in need. It’s a hands-on job combined with a necessity of being able to handle a heavy workload.

Over the semester I have learned many new aspects of social work that have helped deepen my understanding of what social work is really about. This course has taught me things that will help me become a better person and will also help me with my future working with children. Self reflection is a key skill to have when working in social work. We need to understand how we are, and our social location, influence everything we do with social work. My beliefs and values would be beneficial for being a social worker because I have a caring no judgment, personality that allows me to be a neutral and to listen to people.

The phrase: “Helping others is the way we help ourselves” from Oprah Winfrey inspired me to choose this profession. Helping people solve their problems, giving them the opportunity to let off steam and share their feelings through confidential talks makes this profession unique and exceptional. I have abilities and values, such as: persistence, kindness, and loyalty, that are highlighted and essential to this job. Also, I have a plan that I will already start following it because this is what I want to be.

You get to spend you life helping people who need it. It feels good knowing that everyday you are helping someone that is in need. Many things can come of being a Social Worker. You will have many opportunities. You are not just helping someone else but you are helping yourself

Values are principles that people hold important to them in life. As I gotten older my values have changed based on my experience, knowledge, and goals. Since I am in college and the field of social work forced me to open my eyes to different things and ideas I would 've never thought of. Five values that are important to me while I am on this journey of becoming a social worker is my education, positive energy, not judging people based on their past, a reflect and meditate on my life, and be a generous to other.
