Crackle, pop the fire sounded as I placed new logs on top of the hot embers. This was the fire the children of my village sat around and told stories before they went to sleep, and tonight was no different. All of their eyes stared at me expectantly as they waited for me to start telling them a story. “Two Rivers Running, tell us the Story of the Great Battle again,” the little ones asked. All eyes were on me as I sat down next to them, everyone silent as I told them the story of the Great Battle.

About 5 years ago in 2011, my dad and I were bored. Dad had an idea, since it was about six to seven o'clock and getting darker out we could lightsaber fight outside. We both got our favorite lightsabers. If you don’t know what a lightsaber is, it's the weapons from the series called "Star Wars.

The western film is a film with three key points that separate this genre from the rest. The first key point is the theme: civilization versus wilderness. The second key point are the characters and their archetypes. The third key point is the narrative structure within the film. These points set the western genre apart from the rest and make it unique.

The birth of the Wild West as a successful genre was largely a product of personality, dramatic acumen, and good timing as it gave an aura of authenticity. But portrayed the cowboy as the true hero of the West and the Indians as warring savages because of their shows depicted a simple moral representation of good and evil. The Western is a popular genre which is set in the mid to late 19th century in America. The most common tropes of Westerns are shown to be centered on a masculine man who needs to save the day. Even though the West is symbolized as an option of freedom, this is only true for the men as the role of women are usually restricted and fenced in. In the film Shane and the novel Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey we can see how guns play an important role in the men’s identity, and how women are treated as a object for men to save or hardly play a role at all and are completely sidelined.

For example, violence was drastically less common in the West than it is told in stories and movies, since fighting was simply all around counter-productive in those times, and crimes such as bank robberies were extremely rare. Relations towards the Native Americans were very more misunderstood, and the heroic, good-guy image of a cowboy is completely fabricated, since they were actually dirty working class men who were generally thought of as rude and obnoxious.

Western archetypes undeniably played a major role in shaping literature and the American film industry. The genre has specific archetypes and themes, yet is not strict when it comes to the standards that consider a film or a book to be Western. Westerns can have a wide array of plots, yet still contain the characteristics of a standard Western. Most have simple plots: Good guys vs. Bad guys, Cowboys vs. Indians, Outlaw vs. Sheriff, and other simplistic schemes which never vary too much from one another. Throughout the 80s and the events that occurred during this time period, the cowboy archetype changed and evolved which can be seen in many books and films.

The western genre depicts an era in the United States of America where expansionism and imperialism were at its peak and the people who lived in the west where fighting to keep things as they were and used to be. In the book, Blood Meridian or The Evening Redness in the West (McCarthy, 1985), published in 1985, the violence and brutality depicted by the American frontier can be the film, The Wild Bunch, directed by Sam Peckinpah in 1969. The film seems to be the filmic version of the mythical written version of the book. Both the film and book contain groups of outlaws who quest their way across the west killing anyone who gets in their way, which is the classic take on the stereotypical American myth of the west. Though the plot line may seem the same the movie has a different ending to the book.

Based on the article “The Thematic Paradigm” by Robert B. Ray, there are two kinds of heroes that are America’s favorite. The official hero and the outlaw hero and, both heroes have mirrored the American significance in many ways. The official hero is the one who behaves within the law. The official hero includes the law in their tasks and, helps create new laws for the future. The outlaw hero is the type of hero who takes matter into their own hands.

! On the night of that halloween no one would expect that we were going to the old crooked house in the next neighborhood over. The Western genre began almost simultaneously with the settling of the frontier, but these stories focused on individuals or small groups of people. In contrast, the epic is vast with numerous characters and a story that has far reaching consequences. Each part of How the West Was Won could easily have been standalone and typical Westerns, however, the innovation is in combining the disparate stories into a single mythology of the Wild West. This mythology was used to rationalize in some way the taking of the frontier during the era of Manifest Destiny expansionism.
