When filling out a questionnaire, it is only a matter of time before I come across the predictable: what is your race/ethnicity? I do not have to think long nor hard about my answer. In fact, I do not hesitate to pencil in African American. Why is that? It could very well be that at a glance my skin tone and accent is enough for people to quickly label me as such thus reaffirming my identity.

I remember walking down a street and suddenly hearing a person yell a racial slur in my direction. I couldn’t really see his face because he had just walked into a subway entrance. I was shocked, since I had never experienced a direct racial insult. Certainly, I know that that white people had directly attacked some of my friends, but this was a very unpleasant encounter. On the other hand, I have many white friends that see me as a human being, and not a “person of color.”

Challenges are events that are used to change you for the better should you choose it accept it. The challenges I have faced wasn’t a matter of choice but of something that I have no control over. Some people will tell you it’s a burden, some say it’s an entitlement or free ride. Science says it’s just having a high amount of melatonin due to geographical location for survival. To me though, being black probably one of the biggest challenges a human can have in America at least I find it terribly perplexing.

Systemic Racism in the United States Many individuals today have different point of views on how the United States of America became what it is today. For instance, point of views such as how society learned to function the way it does, the law and order in place, and ultimately, how circumstances have developed throughout history. Unfortunately, institutional/institutionalized racism, also known as systemic racism is also a concept that has settled and is grown to be quite predominant in the United States all through times past. Systemic racism continues to take place in settings such as banks, courts of law, government organizations, school systems, and the like.

The stereotypes have brought negative recognition to these ethnic groups. According to an article by Simply Psychology, stereotypes can interfere when an introduction to another race occurs. An individual might sum up the person characteristic based on the stereotypes of the person’s ethnicity. An individual can assume that all Asian Americans are Chinese, and therefore can speak the Chinese’s language as well. This is a negative stereotype of an Asian American that they encounter in their own country.

Everyone is different and we all think differently this is why some people may take stereotypes differently. Some people may take them as joke and others may look at it in a disrespectful way. There has been cases in which some groups are looked at differently because of the stereotypes. These groups tend to be very calm and try to stay away from other groups. There are other races that have actually fought with others because of this nonsense stereotypes.

There’s an old saying that “sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you.” In reality, that saying is wrong. Words hurt a person as much as punch or a kick can. It may not hurt someone physically, but it can scar someone mentally and emotionally. Due to the topics they are associated with, certain words or phrases can elicit strong reactions; some are positive, while others are negative but nonetheless, they all leave an impact on people.

The two identities that I have decided to evaluate are my race (white) and my gender (female). These two identities make up a huge portion of who I am. For that reason, I feel that it is important for me to delve into these identities to better understand myself. In regards to my race I have never felt very impacted.

My father is African-American and my mother is white. I am mixed with two completely different races and it shows through my appearance. When someone sees me they always seemed shocked like it was rare to see a mixed person. Once they find out about me being mixed with more than one race, then there comes the bundle of questions that do not seem to ever end. I often get asked, “If you are half black why are you so pale?” or “Why is your hair like that?” or “ How did you get your hair like that?”

In my opinion, identity is a relative term. Each person has a different perspective on your identity, some people may focus on one part or another, depending on what they know about you and their way of judging people. When I travel to other cities or countries to visit people, I feel my family views a small, particular part of my identity. My cousins, aunts and uncles only know a little about me because of that they make assumptions based on that. They think because I live in Canada I don’t know the best Urdu ( Language of Pakistan) because I don’t live there.
