Personal Narrative On Becoming A Child Therapist

Life is composed of a bunch of different events, some great and some not so good. For all of the orphans in the world, most of the events in their life fall into the not so good category. Imagine losing your parents and being put into a system you have no control of. In, The Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline, she explains the how the system The Children’s Aid Society set up worked.

Minors in care show certain themes that can damage their reputation in adulthood. Acknowledged by Ainsworth and Hansen, movement of homes while being in care puts children at risk to someday be placed as a juvenile offender, become a parent at a young age, and to endure poor educational achievement. Thirty-eight percent of males and thirty-nine percent of females in detention have a history of being in foster care services (89). Ainsworth and Hansen also report that there are a number of fosters who are under seventeen years old and are pregnant or getting someone else pregnant (89). Allen S. Growing up in foster care can be challenging, then transitioning out of foster care into the real world can be extremely difficult without the acquired skills and the support of family. It may seem as though there are too many odds and statics stacked up against you, waiting for you to fail. My injustice project helps to address these issues through mentoring and building relationships letting them now that they are important and can do anything they set their mind to accomplish. The concepts of social stratification, status, privilege and oppression relate to the topic of transitioning foster children by informing previous understandings and societal views.

In 2020 there were approximately 407,493 children in the United States foster care system, all under the age of 20 (“The AFCARS Report”). Foster care plays a big role in providing homes for children that experience abusive homelives, loss of parents or guardians, or severe financial hardship at home. However, being in foster care takes a toll on many children, due to both previous trauma, and trauma experienced in the foster care system. In order to understand the foster care system, one must research how the system works, how it affects childrens’ physical health, how it affects their mental health, and how being in foster care affects childrens’ chances of being successful.

It will be 5 years this June that I have been in the Foster Care System, I can still remember walking home from school smelling the fresh breeze of air, all the sweaty kids running to their cars waiting to head home from school, or to the ice cream trucks that all had the same foul smell of cheese and takis that followed every breeze that came near. There was a black car, the one time is what we referred them to, this was something that was not out of the ordinary to see around my home. But today was different, two men wearing business suits stepped out of it and went into my home. I stayed back just to get a glimpse of what was going on. Well...I was 6 when Child Protective Services came to get us. I lived with my mom and my three sisters, the youngest was Donna she was 5 & Lizzy was 7 and Mary was 10. I remember most of my family lived in the same neighborhood like my two Aunts and my uncle and grandpa and grandma. There was an occasional gunshot, sometimes there was a fire truck rushing down our street . We lived on top of a hill at 1015 Norwich in Grand Rapids.

This book raised awareness to authorities on the kind of treatment happening and proposed a change for foster institutions and homes to be monitored. I have always regretted dropping out of college. I had to decide what was more important to me. Trying to get a higher education to help me succeed in the workforce. Or try to save my marriage which was in shambles.

It highlights how foster children in the system need certain treatments inside of a home because of issues. The book explains how children with behavioral/emotional disorders often get moved from foster home to foster home. They are less likely to be put into a placement where they are guarenteed a long placement. It examines how foster parents are the primary agents of healing and chage in the life of a foster child. It also presents foster parents with new ways to handle foster children.

I wasn’t abandoned. I wasn’t abused. I was just hurt. Their families probably didn 't care about them. My whole family cared about me.

Even though this is the not an intentional case of child abuse, it shows how severe neglect can cause developmental delays. Even though most cases do not end with a happy ending, this case ends with a child who suffered throughout his childhood and ended up being able to do the things that most children are able to do with loving foster

Work with children Throughout my high school and college years, I have had several experiences with children that have all played a part in shaping my love for working with children. During high school, I spent two summers nannying for two young school aged children. Working with these siblings really made me realize how much fun I have working with children and watching them grow. Once I came to college, I started another babysitting job working with two four year old twin girls.

Therefore, it is not surprising that child abuse often causes permanent damage to a child's sense of spirituality. Unfortunately, the child protection community mostly focuses only on overcoming the physical and emotional damage of children - making many victims struggle alone with the reality of God, and the reality of their abuse. Child abuse is a painful reminder of the fact that we live in a fallen world; However, there is hope. Jesus, who has entered our world and faced all his ugliness, said, "Let little children come to me and do not stand in their way" (Mark 10: 13-16). In taking the little children in his arms, he gives us an example and offers us his strength.

For my Personal Developmental Autobiography, I choose to talk about my journey through the adolescence developmental stage. The Adolescence Developmental Stage is a transitional stage of physical and psychological development that generally occurs during the period from puberty to legal adulthood. During this stage so many things happen. Puberty has already happened or is about to happen. Being interested in the opposite sex and going on dates happen.
