Personal Narrative: Diversity In Canada

Yet, today’s Sikhs are ignoring the words of wisdom from their gurus and dismissing the true Sikh way of life. Rather, they are surrendering to the hedonistic illusion of temporal pleasures and self-indulgence (SikhAwareness, 2017). The pressure to fit in has changed the modern Sikhs, as today’s youths are not invested in their faith compared to previous generations. This can have an impact on the faith and belief of an individual, especially if they are surrounded in an environment that has the potential to influence the connection youth have with their faith. Mr Jagpal Singh, a 25 year-old British Sikh states, “Every generation has a certain amount of connection to their faith, it might just be a different way of representing it compared to previous generations”.

Canada is country that is known for its distinctive features that has helped construct Canadian identity. The nation is acknowledged for its national languages and its diverse communities. However, this could not have been done without the help of past Canadian prime minister’s. A prime minister’s actions are the reflection of the country and its future identity. The day of April 20, 1968 marked the beginning of the change in Canadian history.

I have lived in Michigan for my whole life.   The state of Michigan itself is a very unique place, but even more unique is the upper peninsula of Michigan.   The UP is barely more than three percent of the population of Michigan.   We 're known as Yoopers, many people think of us as rednecks that sit around and hunt all day.   Though the opening days of hunting season means most of the teachers are gone for hunting, there is a lot more to the UP than hunting.

Once, I had to move from a very diverse neighborhood in Chicago to a much less diverse suburban neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. Although it had only been six months since I arrived to Chicago, the diverse makeup of the community prevented me from feeling like I was a minority. However my new neighborhood, and thus my new school, was not as diverse. In fact, I was one of the handful foreign students of the school. Moreover, due to the fact that the students did not have a chance to interact with other cultures, I was able to feel the xenophobic attitudes that others had against me.

Natashia Apangchan Canadian Identity As an immigrant, and of the 7 years that I’ve stayed here in Canada, I’ve come to know some of the Canadian identity. I have lots on mind but the things that stand out the most is that Canadians are so patriotic and generous, and diverse. To me, I see the Canadians as patriotic because their love for their country is very strong. I have seen the pride in their eyes when they say that they are Canadian.

The diversity that may be found all around the world and in our very community has always fascinated me. I am aware that it is a widely held belief that being a minority is considered a disadvantage in various aspects and I would disagree with this. Diversity and culture is a two-way street- as a community, whether that be society as a whole or simply a freshman class, we have the potential to be able to learn from each other. I believe that my status as an underrepresented minority has shaped me into the person I am today. Despite moving to the United States at a young age and being a first-generation college student , I am grateful for the privilege to be able to further my education at the University of Utah.

For my Diverse Field Experience this semester, I spent fifteen hours at the Mclean County Juvenile Detention Center. This particular center was occupied by about 8-14 juveniles at a time, all depending on court dates and occupancy of other nearby detention centers. This center usually had 3 staff members working the shift every time I went, which was seven to nine on weekday afternoons. I was intrigued to go to at this time because I thought it would be the time of the day were the juveniles had no school work or other obligations to do while I was there. I wanted to see what they liked to do in the free time before bed, the only stipulation being mandatory snack time at eight pm.

50% of the world’s population include women, however, women continue to be underrepresented as citizens, leaders and elected officials. Despite economic prosperity and political stability as a first world country, Canada’s underrepresentation of women in politics is less than in many underdeveloped countries and thus, brings forth inequality in society as well. Statistics Canada shows that majority of students graduating from post-secondary are women, and this indicates that women should have equal opportunities that men do. Women are accounted for 56.3% of total enrolments in Universities in Canada, which is compared with 43.7% for men. These numbers have remained relatively stable over the past decade with female graduates representing 58% of the total number of graduates in 2012 as well.

In the past I have struggled with my biracial identity. As a child I was confused about which community I belonged in because I am a mix of Navajo and Caucasian. As I got older, I began to question myself and who I was. I felt like I did not belong to either the Native or Caucasian community because in both groups I felt like someone else. I felt as if I had to live two lives that were completely separated.

I cringe at the smell of alcohol floating around the apartment. A cold shiver simmers down my spine as I hear footsteps making their way to my room. 3 loud, hard knocks bang on the door. I open the door waiting for it. Waiting for the rock solid slap that pierces my face everyday leaving bruises and black eyes the size of tennis balls.

Immigration a strong word that defines and that my family express there feelings to. At the age of 3 I was just a little girl running around the house in my dipper playing with my older brother. I do not clearly remember what happen even though I was present I had to ask my mom about it. Both of my parents migrated from Mexico to the United States when they where around 17-19 years old in 1990. My parents met in the United States a year after, my mom got pregnant by my dad and had my older brother by September 1992 and 2 years later I was born.

Life as a Native American sucks. I realized this when I was a little kid. I’ve come to accept that what other people label or describes us as are true. I’m not happy to admit this they are right. My people don’t do anything to prove these people’s claims, or better known as stereotypes, about Native Americans wrong.

Day 2 Immigrant. That word gives me a label here. I am crossing the border to the U.S because my parents think it will give us a new beginning and a better life. I think they’re wrong. Our life in El Salvador was fine: We had a nice house and we were healthy.

The world is filled with people, and like snowflakes, each person is not the same as another. Each person identifies with different aspects of their lives to create their own personal identities. I personally identify with my Italian side of my family to help form who I am today. I have found myself connecting with this side more so than the other parts of my identity. It affects how I live my life by becoming the center to the culture surrounding me.
