Once I got out of the medical tent, the month had almost passed and the trenches were fairly calm with the ending a year of fighting. The blighters just sat around in a quite lazy fashion, shaving their mustaches and greedily scarfing down the remains of their insufficient portions. It was a fairly quiet time compared to earlier incidents and episodes in the war. I was groggy and tired when I stepped back into the trenches, and even with many months of laying still in the hospital tent, my body and mind were still not replenished and in quite awful condition. The very strong medication the doctor had put me on did not help my grogginess in any way. The captain welcomed me in a hearty tone calling me “The Man” and when he announced my presence,
we meet our four main characters, Paul Baumer, Stanislaus Katczinsky Muller, and Tjaden. In this book we see how these men are devastated by Germany's infantry, as it rips apart their humanity, leaving them as empty shells deprived of their souls. As we continue to see how long they continue to progress as individuals, we see them devastated by all-out war. Chapter two introduces us to Corporal Himmelstoss, the power-hungry man put in charge of training the soldiers, who treats them with inhumane cruelty and complete disrespect. As they are able to escape his evil tyranny, they are confronted with the death of their friend Franz Kemmerich, who dies at the end of chapter two, leaves them with the only concern of who will get his boots.
The German government: Instable and “You take it from me, we are losing the war because we can salute too well” ( Remarque 40 ) . This quotation from the book All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque stands in representation for the symbol of questioning the decisions of a government. This book shows how a government may not be making decisions regarding war that are in the best interests of the people. The German government was in a time of struggle and despair during the times of World War I (1912-1918). The instability and false trustworthiness of the German government in the time period of 1910-1930 fed the feelings and themes from the book All Quiet on the Western Front.
1- Technological advances in machine guns and tanks allowed for greater accuracy and larger explosion range caused faster deaths. 2- The soldiers were traumatized and couldn't work well when they went back to their environment. Pg 828 #1-2 1- Paul realized the soldier was still alive after their altercation.
The reading part describes a horrible scene of the battle field. The writer explain in details the time he spent in the war in a way that helps the readers imagine themselves being with him. Remarque, in his novel “All Quiet Men of the Western Front”, showed the suffering of soldiers while they are on the battle field. He talked about the fear possessing the men of not being able to go back alive. Remarque also talks about human parts and dead corps pilling up in the graveyards in front of him.
In chapter two of the novel All Quiet on the Western Front written by Erich Remarque, Paul realizes the threat and destruction of war towards the young soldiers. Paul thought about his dreams prior to fighting in the war and realizes that his dreams were destroyed even before he had a chance to follow them. He also recalls his first experiences of army life as a young recruit, where him and his classmates Kropp, Muller and Kemmerich trained under the command of Corporal Himmelstoss. They were forced to do humiliating chorse and endure harsh punishments daily. Even though the soldiers hated Coroporal Himmelstoss, they believed that he trained them to be pitiless and tough which were essential qualities to survive in the trenches.
Short Summary of Book: This book talked about what all happened during World War II. It also described what happened during World War I. It showed the different things Germany did to expand to fight in the war. It included quotes from people living during the war. It was written in order like a timeline.
According to this quote from All Quiet on the Western Front, the so-called "good life" comes from living like everyday is one 's last. Paul and his gang use their capabilities to, as he says, "make the most of whatever comes their way" (Remarque 7). Not only this, but the "good life" is one with friends. Paul 's usage of "we" notes that this pleasure of relaxation is only good with people you have close bonds with. In short, if Paul had to describe how to live based on his experiences, he would say to make the most of what one has, and share it with others (who deserve
The background to my book is there was a man and he lived a peaceful life but one day Hitler's men came through a destroyed his town and took everyone in it . Now he is living a horrible life in Auschwitz burying the people that he knew and seeing people get killed. The author has been through alt by seeing people he knew get killed and the luck that he survived to tell about the horrible thing that he has been through and making us realize how nice we have it here. The reason I picked this book is because it seemed to be interesting ,like would get a front seat to a very detailed book of a man that lived his life in prison and came out alive.
This story is about a boy named Jesper or Kris, which is his code name. Kris and his friends are trying to stop the Germans from controlling Denmark during World War 2. Germany occupied Poland and eventually occupied France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and most of Europe. Kris and his friend Stefan were fourteen when they carried their first at of resistance against the Germans. They would put sugar in the Germans gas tanks and that would help them slow down.
When we were told that the war started, I was right at the border. Of course, we were not sure whether we would survive or not. We knew we had to fight for real. We believed in Communist ideas. We had it with our mother’s milk.
On all Quiet on the Western Front, there were several notions that the new recruits were not equipped with the precise knowledge or abilities to accurately fight in the war; without immediately dying. For instance, they were not aware of the chemical timings and procedures, how to cover from bombing and gun fire, and the timings of when to fire themselves. In addition, Peck stated, “at least 95 percent of the men going off to risk their very lives did not even have the slightest knowledge of what the war was about” (page 392). This was caused by the societies from which these boys came from, ideally forcing them into war through social norms. The culture within one’s nation when war arose was that males go and fight for their loved ones and for their nation and if they refused they were seen as cowards and taken to war anyway.
Ellen’s point of view: Hello diary, tonight was a stressful night. German soldiers came looking for me and my family. I was so scared that they would figure out i was a Rosen and they would take me away and relocate me. They almost found out because of my hair and how i’m the only one with dark hair. But, the Johansens said that i was born with dark hair it just never fell out and came out blonde like most people.
As I, Kaiser of Germany singed to enter into war under the pressure of my generals (Kaiser Wilhelm II) I solemnly reminded my soldiers that they will be home before the leaves have fallen from the trees (Wilhelm II). Three years passed by since then, and as I gaze out my window I sense the peoples’ desperation for food, and that they have forfeit their trust to us. The war seems to be a broken record player, instead of continuous music it produces incessant casualties. Also, Nicky and I have not spoken since the day war was declared.
Throughout the ages, wars have wreaked havoc and caused great destruction that lead to the loss of millions of lives. However, wars also have an immensely destructive effect on the individual soldier. In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front written by Erich Maria Remarque, one is able to see exactly to what extent soldiers suffered during World War 1 as well as the effect that war had on them. In this essay I will explain the effect that war has on young soldiers by referring to the loss of innocence of young soldiers, the disillusionment of the soldiers and the debasement of soldiers to animalistic men. Many soldiers entered World War 1 as innocent young boys, but as they experienced the full effect of the war they consequently lost their innocence.
In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front there are many good examples of comradeship. Comradeship should have been and is a major part of this story. Think about it, fighting day and night for your life isn’t an easy task to do alone. Friends and acquaintances are going to come in real handy when in war. Remarque does a very good job implying this theme.
