I have a friend her name is Jane Addams. She is a courageous woman in my opinion especially after all she has gone through. 2 deaths in the family did not stop Jane from becoming the woman she was. After having her mother and father die, Jane got 2 degree’s; One from the Rockford Collage and the other from Women’s Medical College in Philadelphia; Jane went on to find her a position in life. After meeting her friend, Ellen Gates Starr (which happens to be me) Jane went about searching for a position in life. It was not until we visited Toynbee Hall that is where we came up with the idea of Hull House. Hull House was first designed for designed for teaching art and literary classes for the immigrants. But soon, it included English classes, Sewing and Cooking classes, and also Daycare for families. Since Mothers and fathers had to work, nobody was available to watch the kids, so they were left in the house by themselves. …show more content…
It also grew to have more activities such as Kindergarten, public baths, a communal kitchen, a playground, a library, an art gallery, and a salon to talk about political things. During the winter, Homeless children would be hungry and cold. Which lead to them stealing food and coal to keep warm and fed. Due to stealing, they were sent to prison because then we did not have juvenile courts. But that all changed When Jane Addams started the first Juvenile court in the country. So that those young ones who stole and found guilty could be sent to Juvenile court or have probation instead of prison. These are the accomplishments Jane Addams and I had. Starting the Hull House and other accomplishments Jane achieved. I hoped you enjoyed reading our story. Sincerely, Ellen Gates Starr-
No other place in the world could rival the US’s diversity, leading to many greats things in the US immediately, and in the long term. For example, Doc 3 shows Chinese workers in a salmon cannery, bringing along their knowledge of fish and how to prepare it. Something as small as this proves the larger idea that foreign immigrants bring along with them their traditions that make the US a more complex and interesting place to live. Due to this new diversity, places such as the “Hull House” were created to help immigrants adapt to life in the US, as well as a place to interact with other cultures. As Hilda Statt Polacheck said, “Hull House was an oasis in a desert of disease and monotony.
One of the services was unemployment services. Unemployment services gave the women the opportunity earn income sewing and the men the same opportunity buy sweeping the street. The opportunity for the men to income by street cleaning gave Jane Addams a view and lesson about economic. For one winter Jane Addams had many valuable lessons, one of the lessons she learned involved a shipping clerk who came to the Hull-House four or five times to earn some income for his family.
There are many wonderful people in history, one of those people are Jacqueline Cochran. She had a few jobs but she felt that they were not the ones that she desired the most. She was first to do something, and what she did was something that is inspiring to us. Jacqueline Cochran was a person. She was born in West Florida circa in 1906.
Welcome to the Hull House! We have just opened our services to Chicago’s West Side community. Our founders, Jane Addams and Elaine Gates Starr are working hard to provide the best for the community. Housing Conditions Currently, many of us live in tenements with multiple families living in tiny, cramped apartments together, that are in buildings that are generally five to six stories high.
The social opportunities improved greatly because train tracks were being built since more people were moving to the West. If train tracks were built it would be easier for people from New York to socially
This rapid urbanization caused cities to become overcrowded and dangerous. The normal standard of living changed drastically. It was impossible to build homes as fast as people were coming in. .
She has inspired different people all over the world. She used courage to get over more than
The creation of numerous institutions that were designed to help individuals transform into free, moral citizens that would conduct services needed. During the 1830 's and 1840 's, Americans constructed jails for criminals, asylums for the mentally ill, and orphanages for underage children. The reason these places were built were to cure the "social ills" and eliminate them by placing certain individuals in an environment where their flawed character would be manipulated and transformed. Before the Civil War the most important building effort was the movement to create common schools that would be open to all children. During the early nineteenth century, almost all children were educated in local schools, private academies, or just at home.
but I also chose Jane Addams as well. One thing I truly admire from Jane was how she saw a problem and did not ignore it but did something to fix the problem such as the Hull House Settlement. Jane put herself in different situations to help her challenge herself and to grow from the different challenges to be role model for others to see (Seigfried,
At the end of the 19th Century, as the United States was experiencing rapid industrialization, a reconfiguration of the social order yielded opposing visions of social progress. Andrew Carnegie, wealthy businessman, and Jane Addams, founder of Chicago’s Hull House, put forward different methods to achieve such progress, where Addams focuses on creating social capital in a seemingly horizontal manner while Carnegie advocates for a top-down approach. While both of them seem to reap a sense of purpose from their attempts to improve the nation, their approaches vary depending on their vision of the composition of the population they want to uplift. First, Carnegie and Addams’ desire to improve society is partly self-serving. For Carnegie, improving society is the role of the wealthy man who, “animated by Christ’s spirit” (“Wealth”), can administer wealth for the community better than it could have for itself (“Wealth”).
Through the Children’s Bureau they were able to decrease infant mortality and improve the living standards of children in orphanages. The settlement houses improved healthcare and education for immigrants. This is all a result of women’s growing place in society because of the progressive
Reformers who wanted to help the inner city, often immigrant, neighborhoods built community-like centers called settlement houses. These settlement houses helped improve the lives of the people by providing hygiene classes and other basic skills, by providing education, by providing job counseling, by providing childcare, by teaching immigrants the English language, and by offering medical clinics. The most prominent settlement house, the Hull House, was located in Chicago’s West Side and founded by Jane Addams. Often, these houses
The women at the Hull Houses were of her class who strongly believed that they belonged in the public workplace and had the idea of protecting children and women in the workplace. They wanted to give all humans social injustice and democracy for all. While at the Hull House, she found interest in urban poverty since it reflected her life when she was married and was later appointed to the Chief Factory Inspector by Governor John P. Altgeld. She later earned a degree in law from Northwestern University and in 1899, she returned to New York to take the position of first general secretary of the newly founded National Consumers League. The National Consumers League is an organization that was created in order to gain control of the purchasing powers of the public and put it towards good labor practices.
The most notable improvements were in technology. Most of this technological advances were in transportation, like subways or cars, but the best techological improvement was the abillity to build higher buildings and tenements. With this improvement camed the dumbbell tenements which improved the way of living of tenements with more ventilation, light and space, but life in the tentment was still dangerous. The tentment changed more when Jacb Riis published pictures of the lifestock of poor people. People started to realise how bad that life stack was and they decided to help.
The novel “The Haunting of Hill House,” written by Shirley Jackson, closely follows the traditional tropes of an American Gothic. The main character of the novel, Eleanor, begins her journey to self growth after accepting an offer to live in a suspected haunted house for the summer. Moreover, Eleanor meets three other people that have an important effect on her development as a person. These characters slowly begin to question their own sanity due to the house’s destructive nature. Jackson appeals to fans of the American gothic through her particular description of the house and how the characters interact with it in order to show the environments foil of an absolute reality.
