Emily Dickinson is considered one of the most influential American poets of all time. However, she was not always perceived in this light. Dickinson dropped out of school as a teenager and lived a reclusive life on her family farm until her death in 1886. She chose this lifestyle due to her fragile emotional state that was caused from her unfortunate romantic relationships (“Emily Dickinson”). During this time, it seemed she learned perseverance and how to cope with troublesome, despairing times through her poetry. In the poem,“Hope is the thing with feathers,” Emily Dickinson uses imagery, diction, personification, and symbolism to develop an overall theme of perseverance.
Dickinson uses imagery to paint the picture of hope as a bird. Many people view birds as symbols of freedom and independence because of their ability to fly and migrate to a new location in order to live freely. In the second line of the poem, Dickinson says,

The poem states, “I’ve heard it in the chillest land” (line 9). Using the word “chillest” provides a negative connotation towards obstacles one may face in one’s lifetime. When one reads the word “chillest,” the sense of isolation and frigidness overtakes the reader. The feeling of isolation encourages the reader to develop a desire and hope for happiness. This line demonstrates how the poet’s diction explores the reader’s ability to feel as though one is capable of moving forward even in dark times. Diction is also present in the sixth line, “And sore must be the storm”(line 6). The word “sore” explains how complications arise in an attempt to prevent hope from overcoming issues of the onerous battle it has to face. The difficult battle attempts to destroy hope, but shows perseverance because hope always finds a way to defeat its
Potential in Possibility Emily Dickinson’s poem, “I Dwell in Possibility (1955), asserts that poetry is her path to a place without limitations. Dickinson backs this belief by using a metaphor of a house to describe the possibility that poetry has given her. Dickinson’s purpose is to explain how her passion in poetry can get her in touch with an infinite and imaginative universe inside her mind. It is both an appreciation poem to poetry itself, as well as an explanation to outsiders for her choices in life. In maybe an unintended or unconscious way, Dickinson has given readers who have ever felt trapped in a monotonous life the hope that the world has more to offer and a reason to follow their dreams instead of settling for the mediocre.
Hope Is a Feathered Thing. " She uses rhyme to give her poems an organized and purposeful flow. Dickinson uses a lot of figurative language when comparing hope to a feathered bird. This poem explores the fluid nature of hope and how it can help us cope with difficult circumstances.
Dickinson wrote the poem “XXXII”, which portrays hope as a soft fragile bird who never loses hope even when it has been abashed. Emily Dickinson was an American poet who was born in Amherst, Massachusetts. Emily was not an outgoing or social type of person. The loss and death of her loved ones impacted Dickinson in a huge manor. There was nothing more to help than to write poems expressing thoughts and feelings.
It is as though the poem is continually under a cloud, making me feel dismal for what has been lost or concealed. What the greater part of this emotional imagery and occasions work to do is make the
Anger is a curious thing some believe it helps them others believe it hurts them, but Mark Twain hit the nail on the head when he said “Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured. ”(Mark Twain) Anger can be identified in a variety of ways by a variety of people. Emily Dickinson’s work is said to be some of the finest in the English language, but she spent most of her life in almost complete isolation. She is one of the most famous poets to have ever lived, and yet much about her life is very intriguing and misunderstood. In fact, the majority of her work was not even published during her lifetime. Over 1800 of her poems were published posthumously by her sister. Her work reflects accounts of life, love, nature, death, eternity, and many other subjects.
The use of metaphor is evident in the poem in the first stanza the metaphor “Futile - the winds -” is important because it is showing that in the middle there is no windy path that can break from their love. And the wind is incapable to produce. This goes back to my thesis because Dickinson is expressing her emotion and love that nothing can come in between the love she has for her significant other and not even the winds can stop the longing of their love. The second stanza “To a Heart in port -”, gives the message that her heart is being unused right now, but is in the boat coming.

Hope is a tone used in the lines of the poem. The writer does this because he wants to represent how there were hard parts to the Harlem Renaissance but at the same time there was still hope for change. They believed that all of their problems could be resolved. This connects directly to the Harlem Renaissance because it represents how this movement had its ups and downs but how everyone would continue to try until they met the joyful ending they were looking for. If there were any obstacles in their way they would overcome them.

Many poets used metaphor and simile in poems to bring attention to serious issues in society. Ports used metaphor to pinpoint the issue through direct comparison. For instance, in the poem Hope is a bird by Emily Dickinson, Dickinson introduced her metaphor in the first two lines "Hope is the thing with feathers -that preaches in the soul". She then develops it throughout the poem by telling what the bird does (sing), how it reacts to hardship. Rita Dove is an African American contemporary woman.

Hope is the thing with feathers is a simple but sophisticated poem that tells the story of ‘hope’ having the second meaning of trust and desire and metaphorically takes on the characteristics of a living creature, a bird. This is supported by the choice of words and metaphors in the first two lines of the first stanza “Hope is the thing with feathers,” “That perches in the soul,” Emily uses the metaphorical image of hope being a bird to describe the abstract thought of hope.
