The story begins with the narrator arriving at a small house in Jacksonville, Alabama to visit his father. As he greets his father he recalls past memories of when his father was healthy and can’t believe that he is now so old and frail. It is around this time that he states how even though he knows it’s the last time he’ll ever see his father he is unable to meet him in the eyes. The father, then, goes on to question as to why none of his other sons are there to see him in his last moments and the narrator hints to the reason being the neglect the father showed his sons and wife when they lived together. The son, however, does not tell him this because he realizes the toll life has taken on his father.

In the movie Big Fish water is an important symbol throughout the whole movie. Without water us humans cannot survive or live, it is a basic necessity for life, our bodies are 55-65% water. In the movie one example of water being used as a symbol for life is when Will had come home from Paris, Edward is laying in bed and on his table beside his bed is a big pitcher of water. At this point Edward looks very ill, he looks pale and clammy, he drink some water which could also be symbolizing that he is in want of health and life.

The better story gives life to the reality, shifting it to another dimension of faith while playing an important role in shaping the minds of the next generation. Life of Pi revolves around conquering the brutality of the story through adding hope and compassion. Similarly, Big Fish adds truth beyond reality, representing the importance of human faith. Significance of spiritual understanding, which is beyond “dry yeast less factuality” is clearly exemplified in both the pieces of literature. Moreover, the “Better Story” conveys the aspect of love and compassion with greater depth and detail, evidently expressing love as the meaning of motivation in life.

Edward acts like this “big fish” during these myths so that his son won’t have to know about his troubled life and find out about all of the bad things in this world. For example, the text states, “Indeed, the eye had become the focus of some notoriety, and was discussed openly and with great veneration among certain individuals Edward Bloom shrewdly befriended.” (Page 58). This quote from the myth “The Old Lady and the Eye” shows the readers that Edward has gained a lot of knowledge and he has worked hard to gain trust. Edward was willing to fight for this old lady’s eye by becoming one of these kids and risk being hurt or even killed.

In addition, the last way that the short story demonstrates grief is when the main character is fishing and she immediately gets the determination to catch the fish she is chasing,“It occurs to me if I fall, I will not have the strength to regain my footing”(36). The reader then gets the feeling that the main character is upset and irritated at the same time. The reader begins to think that it may be that she is a really good fisher and she does not want to let the fish go. The main character is imaging the fish as her father and if she lets the fish escape her, then she would not have the strength to hold herself together anymore. If she lets her father go then she knows that the wave of sorrow will finally hit her and he will finally be gone.

Similar to the father, he tries to pass on the culture hoping it could survive within the family. Sadly, the culture “[was] slowly dying” (341) in the sink. When the fish was being cooked in the wok, it is described as “tires on gravel, a sound so loud it drowns all other noises” (342). The noise level hints a tense argument that has been built up within the family for years. As such, when the fish is served, the tension and dissatisfaction between the son and father imploded; hence, the father acted violently towards his son for being “ungrateful” (344).

It seems that the fish is actually the child, which could not walk at the beginning of his life. This metaphor conveys the helplessness that the child feels during this period. He feels like a fish that cannot swim. Moreover, the author uses imagery to make the reader feel the child 's anxiety, ' 'Under your bed sat the wolf and he made a shadow when cars passed by at night ' '. The child has a wolf under her bed, but she cannot do anything.

The movie tells the story of Edward Bloom, a man famous for his tall tales, reconnecting with Will Bloom, his estranged son who sees his father’s tales as excuses for neglecting him. The melody of this song described as restlessly chromatic and undulating, a swaying Arabic-sounding tune. The melodic line is filled with emotion and oddly unbalanced consisting of seven alternating sections of held tones and movement. The harmony is added behind the melody is dissonant but simultaneously lush. The rhythm was played with in Ella’s version making the classic song her own giving the clarinet a smooth solo. The simple rhythm of the song has an AABA pattern it sticks too.

The idea of this piece is mainly act as an introductory of a story because this piece is only an excerpt from a bigger orchestral performance. From what I have heard, the solo performance is mainly comprise of the woodwind instruments in part B that indicated the slight sign of relief and calmness. The piece has a lot of variation where the composer include different timbres and dynamics such as the high dynamic structure during the first and the last part with the associating crashes of cymbals.
