1. Pathos is a term which appeals to emotion. It convinces an audience by creating feelings that already reside in them. Pathos is presented in the opening of “ A New Perspective” written by Janice E. Fein when the narrator talks about going to kindergarten. She mentions how her mother “is walking me to kindergarten” which appeals to the audience since it brings up memories of how their mother or father must have walked them to kindergarten too. Pathos is used by creating an emotion connecting with the piece and audience. 2. In the informal essay two literary techniques are used voice and mood. A voice in literature is the form though which narrators tell their stories and experiences. An example of this is someone telling a story and changing their emotions through their voice, making it seem more relatable or realistic. The use of voice in the essay is presented by the narrator while describing emotions and feelings. Through this, the narrator makes the readers connect more with her experience with her mother. Narrative tone is how the narrative expresses their emotions and feelings by using certain language styles. In the essay itself, the author uses tones such as self pity and peacefulness. Self pity is shown in the concluding paragraph when the narrator says ,“I may never understand why some of us are cheated in life”. She is somewhat self absorbed over her own troubles with her childhood. Another tone is peacefulness which the author also presents in the concluding paragraph. The smoke and the fire from the after effects of the incident represents the rhetorical appeal of pathos because it shows fear from the damage. Ethos is the ethical appeal in communication. Katy Perry demonstrates this on her Twitter page when she made a post saying, “Happy #PRIDE month. I see you and I love you.” This is her way of showing her support of an ethical standpoint. Katy is showing an intended sign of respect for the LGBT community.
Persuasion: “The act of causing people to do or believe something: the act or activity of persuading people: a particular type of belief or way of thinking” (Merriam-Webster). This concept was used by Orman, Ericsson and Gladwell in each of their writings. Ericsson’s usage of the rhetorical triangle to achieve persuasion evolved through her use of pathos and logos. These two aspects allowed Ericsson to capture her point that everyone lies, and that those lies can take on different forms. When an author appeals to the audiences’ emotions and their imaginative sympathies, they are alluring to the appeal of pathos.
In the Michael Moore's movie Capitalism: A Love Story, there is much use of the device pathos. An example in the film of pathos would be, when the Michael Moore highlights the concept of the “American dream” that's works hard for what they have only for the bank to take everything away because it would benefit them. Michael Moore proved his point because during the film a family lost their home and were living in a big van. The van had two couches and 1 sofa and there were about 5 people living inside the van. The banks took away their house that the family had worked hard for over 15 years in order to make more money.
Blink written by Malcom is an argumentative based research book about how our adaptive subconscious plays a huge part in every day life. It also tells of the pros and cons of our adaptive subconscious. In Gladwell’s Blink he used different forms of rhetoric to persuade us, the readers, of his point successfully. Gladwell uses multiple counts ethos and logos in his writing to get his point across along with pathos, analogies, rhetorical questions, and irony. He also uses his tone and diction to assist his writing.
In the speech “Everything You Think You Know About Addiction is Wrong.” the Author, Johann Hari, has rhetoric, when he uses ethos, logos, and most importantly pathos. Hari uses Pathos when he starts the speech with “One of my earliest memories is of trying to wake up one of my relatives and not being able to.” (00:12) when he says this he is getting the audience to connect with him on a emotional level, by expressing emotion, and that he experienced death, at a young age. Hari also uses pathos when he says “I realized we had drug addiction in my family” (00:12) when Hari says this, he is opening up about something most people don’t just talk about everyday.
Pathos is used many times when James is trying to reach the reader 's emotional side. James Hamblin states “You can look back at your responses, remembering the good things and the feeling nostalgic or remembering the bad and feeling resilient” (Hamblin 3). He is telling the reader, when you look back at old messages, pictures, or notes they are going to have at one point either a memorable impact or an upsetting impact. By James saying this in his article he is using pathos by getting the reader to feel those emotions as if they were looking back at their memories right at that moment.
Pathos emotionally connects with the reader. Outliers shows many examples, one would be the story of 12-year-old Marita living in a one-bedroom apartment with her mom. To reach her success “I wake up at five-forty-five a.m. to get a head start, I brush my teeth, shower. I get some breakfast at school, if I am running late…” (Gladwell, 264).

In the introduction, the first rhetorical device he introduced is pathos. Coates present pathos when he introduced Clyde Ross. He titles the first chapter as, “So that’s just one of my losses”.

In the story Orwell committed the crime of shooting an elephant, which legally he had the right to do, but morally felt guilty about killing an innocent animal.
