Although some people say social media can lead to increased self-confidence, it can also lead people, teenagers in particular, to seek attention and become narcissistic; therefore, parents should limit the amount of time their child spends on social media. Researchers have concluded that people who use social media tended to have narcissistic personalities. There may be some reasons why social media is good for kids, but all and all social media is dangerous to the well-being and education of minors. To start with, social media is dangerous to kids that are online because people can be anonymous, predators, and/or cyberbullies. For example, Hinduja, a professor of criminal justice, at Florida Atlantic University says that about 20% of youth have been either victims or perpetrators of cyberbullying. Also, masking one 's identity on the internet make someone more likely to be a cyberbully (SIRS 1). Masking one’s identity can be a serious problem.
Researchers had 155 undergraduate students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison fill out questionnaires regarding narcissism, demographic information and FB usage (Choi, Panel, Nardis & Toma, 2015). Researchers asked the participant to friend the research team temporarily on FB in order to gain access to their FB profile. Once the participant agreed, they completed the NPI. Then, the participant’s FB profile was downloaded and coded by research assistants for the total number of FB statuses, comments and likes received during the past two weeks prior to the research study. The research findings were that individuals who were high in narcissism actually received less comments and likes compared to individuals low in narcissism (Choi et al., 2015).
