Some people are mistaken about social media because it can help you by putting you in social groups, you can even make friends on social media. But teens should not use social media because of dangers, harm to reputation, and mental illnesses.

The first negative impact of social media is that it leads to brain crashes. Which can lead to mental illness. Spending more time with using social media reduce the amount of using the brain in a good way. For example, using it became addiction some times. There may be some reasons why social media is good for kids, but all and all social media is dangerous to the well-being and education of minors. To start with, social media is dangerous to kids that are online because people can be anonymous, predators, and/or cyberbullies. For example, Hinduja, a professor of criminal justice, at Florida Atlantic University says that about 20% of youth have been either victims or perpetrators of cyberbullying. Also, masking one 's identity on the internet make someone more likely to be a cyberbully (SIRS 1). Masking one’s identity can be a serious problem.

Researchers had 155 undergraduate students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison fill out questionnaires regarding narcissism, demographic information and FB usage (Choi, Panel, Nardis & Toma, 2015). Researchers asked the participant to friend the research team temporarily on FB in order to gain access to their FB profile. Once the participant agreed, they completed the NPI. Then, the participant’s FB profile was downloaded and coded by research assistants for the total number of FB statuses, comments and likes received during the past two weeks prior to the research study. The research findings were that individuals who were high in narcissism actually received less comments and likes compared to individuals low in narcissism (Choi et al., 2015).

The spread of narcissism in the United States is becoming an unruly problem. Narcissistic traits in individuals include entitlement and the overall belief that one’s self is better than they are in actuality. Authors Jean M. Twenge and W. Keith Campbell address these issues in The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement. Some key contributors to the growing amount of narcissism in western culture are parenting, attention seeking on social media, and antisocial behavior (especially online).

Thirty years ago, the concept of social media would have seemed impossible. A place where a person can show everyone they know what they are doing in two seconds from any city seems insane. Today, it is the daily ritual of the average teenager, including myself. I start my mornings looking at Instagram and end my nights looking at Snapchat. The middle of the day is for YouTube.

During these days, it seems as if nobody can live without checking their social media accounts, whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.

For years people have played the “blame game” with media and its effects on society. It has been questioned whether the media helps or hurts more in its overall impacts. The media consists of magazines, advertisements, TV shows, and social pages such as Instagram, SnapChat, Twitter, and Facebook, all in which society seems to be addicted to. The real question is, is having all of these sources of media positively or negatively affecting society? Some people blame the media for harming society by causing eating disorders and a low self esteem.

In other versions of the Ancient Greek myth, Narcissus transformed into a daffodil - a flower that continues to flourish until today. And like the flower, narcissism persists in modern society. While the tale of Narcissus may have happened eons ago, our current definition of narcissism still embodies many of the same character flaws, including: a social extraversion with little interest in forming intimate relationships with others, a positive and inflated sense of self, and various efforts aimed at self-enhancement.
