L&C alumna Adrienne Reed Oliver has had her heart set on working at Lewis and Clark Community College ever since she graduated from the college in 1990. “Lewis and Clark Community College has been a long-term goal for me since I graduated,” Reed Oliver said. “I was so inspired by my speech teacher, Linda Watkins, I vowed to return and give back the same support, the same constructive criticism and the same demands for only the best, just as she had.” As Lewis and Clark’s Coordinator of Diversity and Inclusion, Reed Oliver is focused getting to know students individually and helping them overcome specific obstacles.

After graduating from MHS, the next challenge in my mission to ascend from my circumstances was to become the best student at The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). With consideration of my mother not graduating high school, it was imperative and self- driving that I reward her sacrifices by excelling in my academic career. Eager to outperform, consequently, I earned the Smeal Merit Diversity Scholarship for three consecutive years (Freshmen-Junior) at Penn State. This prestigious scholarship is only awarded to the top five minority business students at Penn State. In addition to my academic successes, I became very active on campus and served as a leader at the top of four different campus-organizations.

It is not only my intellectual curiosity, but also my passion towards giving back to the community, that will lead me to success. As a UD honors student, I plan on joining organizations and performing volunteer work that I have done in high school. It will allow me to consolidate my musical and creative passions, while participating in new extracurricular activities pertaining to sports and community service. The Berkeley Union School (BUS) seeks to provide accelerated learning programs for children planning to obtain their first college degree before the average age that other children graduate from high school. With the belief that children are capable of far more than has traditionally been expected of them, BUS will offer fast paced classes and will emphasize the role of active learning, while allowing the students to decide the discipline they find most interesting. Utilizing the vast supply of local academics, the program will facilitate each students introduction to their discipline of choice, familiarizing them with the corresponding university-level material. Furthermore, the school will see to it that each student become fluent in a number of languages, in order to promote the grace of dialog, in an effort to nurture a framework for people to learn to be attentive to others and to the world around them, in order that free choice be respected and independence promoted, so that a community can thrive and

Demographically, Jefferson City High School (JCHS) had 74.3% White students and 16.6% Black students with 42.4% free (or reduced) lunch in a population of 2,618 in 2008 (DESE, 2014). Thus defining JCHS as a large suburban secondary school based in an urban setting. I was hired for the 2009 school-year to help model the vision of learning in my school community by supporting the development of faculty skills that match the will of our directive. The mission of the JCHS community seeks to teach, inspire, motivate, and empower students to be responsible members within a global society (Jefferson City, 2011). The details of successful implementation to fulfill our mission to each student were ambiguous in both philosophy and application.

With the help of my Village, I was able to gain acceptance into one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world, known as the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Coming from Stone Mountain, black and brown students struggled with obtaining a high school diploma, let alone an undergraduate degree. By remaining diligent and persistent throughout my academic career, I was able to regain the power and matriculate in a system that was not meant for African-Americans to thrive. Attending UCLA is substantial for me because now, I have the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty within my family that would have been prevalent if I had remained in Stone Mountain. Many of my friends back in Georgia are either dead or in jail.

I am a leader, a whole hearted person that believes in the greater good, a selfless individual, an intellectual young adult, and a brave character, and it is on account of these qualities that I feel Montclair State University is the school for me. Being that I am an individual that has matured intellectually, emotionally, and now has the motivation needed to seek a positive trajectory and path in life, and I believe this school could only help further my growth as a person and strengthen my academic abilities. Writing has always been one of my strong suits and it is the best method I’ve learned as a way to express myself. Growing up, I had a rough childhood, and it was through reading and writing that I learned to better my perspective towards life.

By holding a three-day event, the committee members promoted the benefits of completing community college. We planned for this event for approximately two months and executed it in three days. The result was that more than 2,500 students pledged to complete college at the end of this event. Consequently, our membership rose by approximately 40%. All these accomplishments were significant achievements for our chapter as a whole and had a great impact on me.

Dear Rossier School of Education Faculty, Throughout my education I was not expected to succeed, english being my second language and attending low socioeconomic schools in the city of Santa Ana I was deemed to dropout of school like the majority of children before me. I rarely remember having a student-teacher relationship with an educator throughout my education, and as I succeeded academically my teachers were surprised but nothing more than surprised. Then there were the teachers that made all the difference, teachers that went above and beyond and left an everlasting impact on how I view education, and essentially what made achieving a higher education possible. With the guidance of teachers, instructors and school faculty I was admitted to the University of California Irvine which was not only an accomplishment and a dream of mine but an accomplishment for my family. Overall, the nature at Penn will allow me to grow as a learner not only in my discipline but in others. Penn’s collaborative environment will allow me this. The small class size and the encouraged collaboration with professors will allow me to grasp a deep understanding of political science while at Penn. In addition, as a minority diversity is something that is incredibly important to me. This idea was only strengthened by my time at the University of Mississippi, because it was there that Penn’s constant emphasis on diversity as well as their strides to make every student from all walks of life wI long to be in a community where my classmates and I equally contribute in the exploration of each other’s interests.
