Oscar de la Hoya was born February 4, 1973, into a very poor and tough neighborhood in East Los Angeles. Sometimes De la Hoya’s family didn’t have enough money for food. There were also lots of street gangs and drug dealers. His father decided to give him some boxing lessons to help adapt to the neighborhood he lived in.
