Tim Burton is a famous director who puts a lot of originality into his work. Burton uses editing techniques, music and sound, as well as shots and framing and camera movements to determine the mood of the scene. Editing is one of the techniques Burton uses to create emotion and suspense in the audience. The sounds used in the movie assisted viewers in many ways; 1) guided attention to certain parts of the scene, 2) helped define the dimensions of where the characters were positioned in the scene, 3) conveyed the mood of the scene and the character’s states of minds, 4) helped to represent time, 5) created rhythm not provided by music, 6) revealed the main characters aspects, 7) aroused expectations about what was going to happen in the scene, and 8) enhanced the overall dramatic effect of the sequence of the movie. There are many things that make “Citizen Kane” considered as possibly one of the greatest films every made; to the eyes of the passive audience this film may not seem the most amazing, most people being accustomed to the classical Hollywood style, but to the audience with an eye for the complex, “Citizen Kane” breaks the traditional Hollywood mold and forges its own path for the better. Exposition is one of the most key features of a film, it’s meant introduce important characters and give the audience relevant details and and dutifully suppress knowledge in turn. “Citizen Kane” does not follow this Classic Hollywood style exposition, instead going above and beyond to open the film with revealing as little information as possible and confuse/intrigue

Citizen Kane by Orson Welles is a cinematic classic, released in 1941. Citizen Kane challenged traditional narrative and technical elements of classic Hollywood cinema. Kane was narrated by several people that include their take on Kane’s life. The story unfolds by many flashbacks and is told by different perspectives over the years through different narrations. Charles Foster Kane was a millionaire, head of newspapers and died saying “rosebud”.

In a castle high on top of a hill lives an inventor's greatest creation, he was a near-complete person. The creator died before he could finish his hands. These three techniques are used numerous of times for the duration of each film. Although, many various emotions are constructed, there are feelings that anyone may connect to. Tim Burton is a successful filmmaker and has inspired many with the use of his cinematic techniques.

Shot Analysis: Citizen Kane Orson Welles, director of “Citizen Kane”, is well known for his unusual directing methods that defied conventional cinematic techniques. Welles provided his audience with original forms of cinematography, narrative structures, and music. The scene I chose to analyze is extremely important to the plot of the film because Kane begins to realize that he is going through some serious financial problems. During the scene, Kane maintains a sarcastic mood, until he finally decides to surrender and signs the papers that transfer the ownership of his media empire to Mr. Thatcher.

The film Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock employs various clever camera movements and sequences which seem to portray the main character’s state of mind. Right from the opening sequence the cinematography in this film had me intrigued. The viewer is show the red filtered eyes of a mysterious woman which zooms into a black void where animated colored rings spin and zoom to a menacing and mysterious sounding score, all of this provides the foundation for a film about illusions. The film also does a good job at using an unreliable main character who is oblivious to the trickery going on around him. The character of Scottie is flawed through his naivety and his investment in romance.

In Avatar the use of light and colour was used to bring the world of Pandora to life, and create a mystical theme, all while still creating a life like effect. Many cool colours were used such as blues, greens and purples to aid in the softness of mise-en-scene. Low key lighting was used to create suspicion or suspense for the audience, as well as naturalistic lighting to give the audience an idea of what it would look like if it was real life. Different filters were placed over scenes to evoke emotions; for example, when Jake Sully and Neytiri had their first intimate scene front lighting was in use to create an innocent, halo effect on the actors. Another factor which impacts the theme and meaning is sound.
