Symphony No.5 was known as the final piece by Mendelssohn and after the first performance at Berlin, Mendelssohn never performed it again because he regarded the symphony as a piece of juvenilia. More than 20 year after Mendelssohn have passed away, the symphony has been performed again. This symphony is also called the Fate Symphony which Beethoven explained by sayng that it was how fate knocks at the door, which is heard by the famous four note motif heard in various was through out the entire symphony. It was also written when Beethove started to go deaf and was entering depression as he wouldn’t be able to hear the music that he composed, the fourth movement ends triumphantly showing that he has overcome his lack of hearing and that he has just finished composing an entire symphony without his full hearing
The orchestra maintained the musical score and provided ornamentation and emphasized the melodic contour of the singer’s vocal line. Without reading the subtitles, there is such emotion and energy in the male singer’s performance that it is easy to see, along with the physical positioning and facial expressions of the female performer, that there is an impassioned dialogue being given from him to
Although this is somewhat long duration compared to other music that listened before, the segment of the piece is played repeatedly so that I used to observe this music. The pinches in this work are unfamiliar to the audiences because they are not standard chromatic scale, which is equal temperament. The unique tuning system and the performance style increase the tension of the
This piece consisted of two different movements. The second part of it was a lot more allegro, upbeat, and energized. It symbolized the eternal love that no one, not even a powerful king, could take away. The whole orchestra had more active roles and a polyphonic texture. Together they made a beautiful
This orchestral composition is a skillful combination of these elements that makes this classical piece one of my favorites. The instrumentation
There are many elements in, Mendelssohn 's “Symphony No. 4 Movement 1” and Brahms’ “Symphony No. 2 Movement 4” that makes them different from composer 's music of the classical period. In their pieces it tend to have longer melody lines and colorful chromatic chord structures. Therefore the movements are much longer then those of the classical era. There was also innovations and advances in the orchestra that allowed more dramatic melodies.
This is then followed by a sing-song like eight-note figure that features a pointed forward momentum. The rhythmic building blocks of the theme is constructed in two bar phrases which then sequences upward by step (Example 1). The accompaniment to the theme is sustained half notes played by the second violins, Violas, and Cellos The home key and the harmonic content of the exposition is also very clear in its presentation. The opening of the movement is in A major and remains primarily diatonic in its harmonic content, with only the occasional passing tone. The primary theme is played twice having a four-bar transition in between each quotation (Example 2).
I attended to a concert performed by the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra on November 13th this year. This concert took place in the Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. I chose to attend to this concert because I have never been to a performance by any youth orchestra, I was curious to see how their performance would compare to other orchestras. The first of the three piece that were performed in this concert was Maenads’ Dance, from The Bassarids, composed by Hans Werner Henze. A variety of instruments were used in this piece, including woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings.
Instruments are introduced at the beginning of new sections, such as the pre-chorus and chorus. Dynamics each verse begins in mp and increases dynamically to mf at the pre-chorus; there is a slow crescendo to f during the transition from pre-chorus to chorus. Tempo the tempo of this song is moderato at approximately 116 bpm, however it feels much slower due to the emphasis being on the 2nd and 4th beats rather than on the 1st and 3rd.
The melody of this song described as restlessly chromatic and undulating, a swaying Arabic-sounding tune. The melodic line is filled with emotion and oddly unbalanced consisting of seven alternating sections of held tones and movement. The harmony is added behind the melody is dissonant but simultaneously lush. The rhythm was played with in Ella’s version making the classic song her own giving the clarinet a smooth solo. The simple rhythm of the song has an AABA pattern it sticks too.
Concertino for flute and piano, Op.107 Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944) Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944) was a French composer and pianist. Her mother, a pianist and singer, provided young Cecile with her earliest musical instruction, who at a later age began to experiment in composition. Her father’s disagreement prevented her from attending the Paris Conservatoire, so instead she studied privately with members of its faculty, which included Benjamin Godard. She started composing music at the age of 8 and performed abroad at the age of 16. Chaminade became a successful composer and concert pianist in the early 1900s, with a tremendous popularity in the United States and was one of the first French female professional composers.
The Appalachian Symphony Orchestra performed, Celebration and Remembrance. The orchestra opened with Fanfare for the Common Man. Which was conducted by Mr. Smith. It was a great way to start off a World War II and Civil War Memorial concert. It was the opening piece and the orchestra was full of energy, and came out loud and with the bang.
“Music for 18 Musicians” is an excellent example of pulse music. In terms of structure, instrumentation and harmony are unique, compared to his previous works. The basic material consist of a sequence of eleven chords which are heard at the beginning and the end of the work. These chords, repeated in pulsing and sustained notes for the length of two breaths of the bass clarinetists, are examined one by one over a period of five minutes as the basic harmony over which longer musical periods are later elaborated. The piece has an arch structure:
First of all, the piece is quite interesting as a prelude – an introductory piece of music as it start off with dynamic and vibrant sounds that include the whole ensemble. This piece is structured as a three-part or ternary form which consists of ABA’ form. The idea of this piece is mainly act as an introductory of a story because this piece is only an excerpt from a bigger orchestral performance. From what I have heard, the solo performance is mainly comprise of the woodwind instruments in part B that indicated the slight sign of relief and calmness. The piece has a lot of variation where the composer include different timbres and dynamics such as the high dynamic structure during the first and the last part with the associating crashes of cymbals.
The first movement, Allegro ma non troppo, is very fiery and powerful. After an initial flourish of piano solo, the violin brings forth the main theme, a romantic, almost heroic melody. As the theme is developed fast passages create a sense of urgent drama. The middle movement is very unique because of its title Improvisation: Andante cantabile. The tranquil violin passages give the impression of improvisational material.
