, I am sincerely honored to have been selected as one of the recipients of the Opportunity Scholarship. Thanks to your support, I am one step closer to achieving my dream. As an immigrant, I understand the value of education and cherish the opportunities present in life to advance. Growing up alongside my classmates, I envied their luck to have been born in a rich country and have access to unlimited resources. Aside our difference in status, we were the same, American, with one dream: going to college. At times I questioned the possibility of furthering my education. Even with the enactment of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), a policy created by the Obama administration that allowed eligible DREAMERS to come out of the shadows …show more content…
South Carolina prohibits in-state tuition for DACA recipients and denies any type of federal and state aid. This rendered a financial impossibility for me and I was left distraught. There were days I would cry not knowing what to do. Countless of hours spent studying, worth nothing. Then I found hope; The Opportunity Scholarship. The Opportunity scholarship offers a chance at life, an opportunity for self betterment. It demonstrates that people care. That strangers care about students like me and for the future of America. This award will not only lessen the financial burden brought upon by governing laws, but it will bring both my parents’ hard work and mine to fruition. That their journey will continue, through their children. Now, I
After a number of attempts, the federal Dream Act legislation has still not passed. Despite the difficulty the federal government has had on passing the DREAM Act, several states have taken it on their own initiative to create their own version of the DREAM Act. “Currently, at least seventeen states have laws allowing students who meet specific requirements, regardless of their immigration status, to pay in-state tuition rates at public postsecondary institutions” (Table). Supporters believe the federal DREAM Act will impose significant benefits to both the United States and immigrant populations and will continue to push to get the legislation passed.
Investigations into how recipients are chosen have yielded no information. In fact, in 2011, Georgia passed legislation that further lessened the information their Department of Revenue, which tracks the income of STOs, could release (192). What little information has been gathered about the recipients of STO scholarships reveals that the students typically deemed worthy of receiving STO
Now, that it is 2017, The United States of America does not deny education to anyone. Including those who are undocumented such as myself. I can’t compare to those life threating dangers that they face but to this day I still fear deportation. I was brought to The United States when I was two-years old and since then I have not been back to my home country. I grew up here, I learned the culture, the language, and I was also blessed to be able to get an education here.
Many Latino-Americans, including myself, aspire to surpass poverty and discrimination. Through my success, I will undoubtedly change the world, help those in need, and utilize the knowledge I will acquire through my degree to assist those who lack the opportunity to seek a promising
It is getting harder for immigrants living in the United States to fulfill their American Dream, which causes them to put pressure on their first generation American child to fulfill the dream for them. To many immigrant parents, the Dream consist of getting a high paying stable job, and being able to provide for the rest of the family. However, even if a first generation child goes to a well respected college to get the stable, high paying job of their parents dreams, it is sometimes not enough. Due to language barriers and ethnic sounding names, first generation Americans are constantly being put down by employers who care more about appealing to the White public than provide an educated person a job. Immigrant parents fail to understand
The Douglas Honors Diversity scholarship will help me achieve my educational and professional goals in many ways. This scholarship will help me continue my education and career path that I am passionate about. I am the first in my family to pursue a higher education. I am also the first in my family to deviate from a “set” path for me. I come from a family that lives off of state help, so we are not able to pay for a higher education.
False Accusations of Undocumented Immigrants Undocumented Immigrants are constantly accused of being cause of terrorist and criminal acts. However not all immigrants are, in fact a report by American Immigration Council found that immigrants are less likely to be incarcerated than native born citizen. This shows, that a majority of immigrants are not being incarnated as much, compared to US citizens. * Some people may assume that the more immigrants that there are, the more crime they bring. However, a report by America 's Majority Foundation found that the crime rates are lowest in states with the highest immigration growth rate.
Ten years ago, I immigrated to the United States and ever since I have been an undocumented immigrant. Due to my legal status in the United States, I felt like I was restricted from certain situations and possessions and would never be able to succeed. I was not living the normal life of a seven-year-old. Instead, I had to learn to cope and adapt to a whole new culture. Even though the drastic change at such a young age was a challenge, it has shaped who I am today.
In addition to this, I was constantly denied eligibility for scholarships due to my immigration status, and although I was given many opportunities to represent my school at national conventions, I was unable to attend for the same reason. Fortunately, I suddenly came to the realization that only obstacle preventing me from embarking on these scholastic and career opportunities was myself. It was then that I sought help and with the assistance of a few selfless individuals who took the time to walk me through the process, I

For first-generation students, like myself, education offers the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty or limited opportunities that their families might have experienced. It equips them with the knowledge, skills, and qualifications needed to access higher-paying jobs and better opportunities for advancement. Growing up throughout my life, my family has repeatedly told me that education has the potential to open new doors to a better future. It was this and the motivation to make my family proud of why I valued education so much. Throughout high school, I was dedicated to achieving my academic goals by getting good grades, being placed in honor enrollment classes, and participating in many student organizations that helped with community building, social skills, and time management.
Statement of Personal Achievements It was the end of my junior year of high school that I decided to immigrate to the United States. I was motivated to come to America from Hong Kong for my education. I also aimed to broaden my perspective on life. As a new immigrant and young adult, my life completely changed within these two years.
I am happy that I am able to continue on with my education, because I sometimes have that fear that I will not able to pay for certain necessities for my classes. I work on weekends, but that sometimes in not always enough. On the weekends, I live with my mom in a one bedroom apartment on a couch that we struggle to make it week by week to pay the bills or just to go food shopping. Hence, this scholarship allows me to feel a sort of relief and hope that ADP has this opportunity where we can express our feelings and thoughts about West Chester as a
“Our hopes for a more just, safe, and peaceful world can only be achieved when there is universal respect for the inherent dignity and equal rights of all members of the human family.” – UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka Throughout my life, I have never been completely decisive on a career path. However, in the last few years I have realized that my passion for human rights advocacy is my natural calling which I am destined to pursue. As I entered my first year of college at the University of Maryland – College Park, I took a specific interest in a group known as Consult Your Community. The organization allows undergraduate students to engage with low-income and minority-owned small businesses to provide pro bono consulting services.
By receiving this scholarship, I know my hard work has paid off. It’s been numerous nights where I haven’t gotten sleep or may have went to sleep at 3:30 am to only wake up at 6:45am to go to school. I stayed up these numerous nights studying, doing homework, and trying to beat deadlines. Determination is a skill that’s just instilled in me that drives me to go harder everyday. I strive to be better or on the top in anything I do.
