In the short story “A Gravestone Made of Wheat”, Olaf Torwich is a hard working individual who looks out for those around them. This is proven in both the short story and the movie adaptation. As a first generation immigrant, he has several obstacles to overcome. Although some seem insurmountable, Olaf perseveres and conquers most of the challenges that face him. Due to most Americans’ prejudice and poor relations with immigrants, Olaf and Inge have a tough time adjusting to their life. The members present in their community are unaccepting of the couple.
