Even though George and Lennie seem to be lonely, they have each other as well as the other characters do not have anybody. She says, “ Well, I ain’t giving you no trouble. Think I don’t like to talk to somebody ever’ once in awhile? Think I like to stick in that house alla time?” By what she said here, you can tell that she felt very lonely. While she was talking to Lennie, you could tell she enjoyed the time that they took to talk. Curley’s wife felt lonely because people thought that all she did was cause trouble and she was bad news, when all she wanted is to talk to someone and socialize because she was lonely. Obviously, in the book Of Mice and Men, there were many characters that were very lonely. They also all had good reasons to be lonely. They also all had hope, like Candy, Lennie, George, and Crooks all had hope in getting a farm of their own. And Curley’s wife had hope into getting a life on her own and being an actress. The main part on why they are as lonely as the are, is that they had no one to talk to or to socialize with. Clearly, they all were very lonely and they all had hope in the
Mother Teresa once said, “Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.” This quote fits with the novel Of Mice and Men so well because the people are struggling to find a friend, no matter who they are, they are all lonely. George Milton and Lennie Smalls were two men that had the American Dream, but due to the living conditions they had and the metal stability of Lennie, their dream became way harder to accomplish. Lennie was caught for doing something that he could never change. So George had to get rid of Lennie, and their dream became non-existent since Lennie was dead.
Of Mice and Men Loneliness Have you ever felt lonely in your life? Sure you have. Loneliness is an inevitable part of our life, it caused by many uncertain factors and it usually leads to negative emotion such as depression or anxiety. Through Curley’s wife, Crooks, and Candy, John Steinbeck had used his way to state how those characters had endured their loneliness throughout the book “Of Mice and Men”.
We all may have had the feeling of loneliness and isolation, wanting companionship feeling abandonment. In John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men, there are men living on a ranch having their own reasons for loneliness or being isolated. The three characters Crooks, George, and Lennie crusade dealing with own ways of loneliness and isolation. Crooks has no one that likes him because he’s black, Lennie struggles mentally and George struggles with always having to care for him. They all can’t decide whether it is that they want to be alone or not.
She states, "I get lonely, you can talk to people, but I can't talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. How'd you like not to talk to anybody?"(Steinbeck 94). Curley is often running around the farm looking for her. She’s always gone and looking for something to do, so she usually talks to the men that work on the farm.
Also, she just wanted anyone who would talk to her and listen to her. She wasn’t aware that being friendly and kind would take a turn for the worse. Having no friends around and no one to talk to would be very lonely. Curley’s wife knew that statement to be very true. “I get lonely...”
Loneliness is a very common In Of Mice and Men, loneliness is a very common thing, the men who work on the farms travel from farm to farm usually alone, "Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don 't belong no place. They come to a ranch an ' work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake, and the first thing you know they 're poundin ' their tail on some other ranch.
To begin, loneliness is what crushes Curley's wife the most in the book. For example, one way Curley's wife suffers from being lonely is because she isn't allowed to talk to anyone. Curley would be mad at her if she did. So, she stays in the house most of the time alone.
People Affected by Loneliness Loneliness can make anyone affected by it very depressing and sad to see. It is seen in Of Mice and Men in many characters that are prominent in the story. The main ones are Crooks (the black stable hand), Candy (the old worker with his old dog), and Curley’s wife (who is ignored so that they do not get into trouble). Each of these characters have had lasting events that led them here.
OF MICE AND MEN ESSAY Loneliness is a tough, sad feeling for many people and can definitely have affects on how they act and/or feel. Within Of Mice and Men the constant topic loneliness is talked about. Of Mice and Men is a novel written by John Steinbeck and is a realistic fiction novel that takes place in California during the Dust Bowl Era. Just about every character talks about their loneliness, some more that others. All the characters say at one point that they feel lonely and it affects their acts.
The motif of loneliness is explored throughout John Steinbeck's novella, Of Mice and Men, not only through the main characters, but the secondary characters as well. Of Mice and Men has many examples of discrimination. Some of the best examples are racism and sexism, which is why two of the characters are shown to be lonely. Crooks, the stable hand, is black, which makes all the others on the ranch want to have nothing to do with him. Similarly, Candy is outed since he is an old cripple.
Loneliness and Alienation in “Of Mice and Men” In John Steinbeck’s novel, “Of Mice and Men”, many characters were plagued with loneliness and alienation, and most characters were in need of acceptance. The harsh time period of the Great Depression affected three characters in, “Of Mice and Men” greatly. Three characters that are plagued by loneliness and alienation and are in need of acceptance the most include George Milton; the protagonist of the novel, Crooks; the negro stable buck with a crooked back, and Curley’s wife; a young woman who just wants somebody to talk to. In this essay, you will learn why George, Crooks, and Curley’s wife were the loneliest and why other characters were not plagued with loneliness and alienation as much as these three characters. George Milton is the protagonist of the novel.
Some of the characters in the book have been described as more isolated and lonely than the other character, with the ones in particular ; Crooks, Candy and Curley’s Wife. Crooks is lonely because he is black and has a crooked back which is physically isolating him, Candy is lonely because he is old and only has one hand, Curley’s Wife is lonely because she is the only woman on the ranch. All the people living on the ranch are lonely to some extent. This is proven when Steinbeck describes the bunkhouse where all the workers sleep. " Over each bunk there was nailed an apple box with the opening forward so that it made two shelves for personal belongings of the occupant of the bunk."
Loneliness and isolation is an ongoing theme throughout the novel Of Mice and Men, experienced by several characters to different degrees. Some characters are more isolated and lonely than others, yet every character in the story goes through this theme during one point in the story. There are various reasons why each character is lonely or isolated. In general, all the ranch workers feel some sort of loneliness because they move alone from ranch to ranch and do not have real connections with others, Curley’s wife experiences this theme because she is the only woman on the ranch and nobody wants to interact with her because Curley is very protective and hostile of her. Thirdly, Candy struggles through being lonely and isolated after Carlson shot his dog and because Candy does not work with the others since he is a swamper.
A key aspect of any novel or story is the way the characters interact and feel towards everything. In John Steinbeck’s, “Of Mice and Men”, the characters tend to give off the effect of loneliness and the feeling of isolation throughout the novel. The main characters that give off the effect of loneliness and the feeling of isolation are Curley’s wife, Crooks, and George. They’ve been truly alone, if not in mind then in body.
First, loneliness is the sadness caused by having no friends or company, and friendship is a state of mutual trust and support between people, they are polar opposites, yet a person may acclaim to have both. For example today a person may have a friend, or many, but still will face loneliness in their life in one way or another. This is shown in Of Mice and Men periodically throughout the novel, knowing this the reader is challenged with such themes, the enticing beauty of friendship between George and Lennie, and the gloomy dreaded idea of loneliness shown by Curley’s wife, Candy, Crooks, and again Lennie. Among these characters the reader may also feel a connection between themselves and the characters, even though the world now and during the publication of Of Mice and Men has changed a lot. The world has reformed, and developed exponentially so, however friendship and loneliness is still a facet of everyday
