Imagine going on a journey and not knowing the potential obstacles that will come up along the way. Characters or real human beings do not always know what is going to happen on their journeys nor do they know the consequences that may arise. A journey sometimes results in losing loved ones for a single chance for something good to come out of it. The people that complete a goal during these journeys have to be strong and brave. Two people that relate to this type of journey are Odysseus in the story of The Odyssey written by Homer, and John Kuol from the story “Escaping Death”. Both of these survivors learn that life is a long journey full of obstacles, but if one works hard and remains focused on a goal, he or she will find success in the …show more content…
Circe is first viewed as a scary being that manipulates people. To prove that people thought she was a horrible person Homer writes, “I sensed a trap. Suddenly all vanished- blotted out- not one face showed again, though I sat there keeping watch for a good long time”(10.238.284-286). Circe turns some of his men into pigs and after an attempt of rescue and a strange turn of events falls in love with Odysseus and he is offered marriage to a beautiful goddess. Instead, he decides to focus on his own wife and child back at home in Ithaca. This shows that Odysseus works hard at making it home because his main love and focus is his family back home even if it means passing up one of the biggest offers of his …show more content…
They both fought through the mental and physical pain of their journey, and even though they make it to where they want to be, there are still challenges that await them both. Odysseus is successful when he finally reaches his homeland ithaca but has to stay undercover from enemies that are there. Odysseus’s success in finally reaching home is still proven to have challenges when Homer writes, “ I'm a fugitive now ,you see.I killed Idomeneus’ son, Orsilochus, lightning on his legs , a man who beat all runners alive on that long island-what a racer!”(13.295.294-296). This quote from Odysseus proves that he is in fact back in Ithaca and is still being hunted and needs to stay undercover. John is successful in making it to freedom in America but still needs to make a living for his family to sustain itself. An example of John success is when he writes, “I'm in 11th grade at Boston English High School...It is important to get education” (Kuol)This quotes shows the fact that John has successfully free and is eager in getting an
B-block Monsters and Villains in The Odyssey The Odyssey is one of the first stories ever told. It was told thousands of times before it was even written down. Since it was told so many times the story has been changed changed with every version. The first person to ever write does The Odyssey was Homer, however the version that will be referred to in this essay was translated by Robert Fitzgerald.
In “The Odyssey” by Homer, temptation has a negative impact on Odysseus. Some reasons for this being are, when he stayed with Circe for a year and when he wanted to listen to the sirens. Even though Odysseus has experienced many temptations he has learned to deal with them and to not give in. Odysseus only wanted one thing and that was to go home and see his family. But he was tempted to do many things, one is staying with Circe.
He tried to show his wife how he persevered through his expedition home in order to reunite with her and their son. This final quote is an epitome of my ongoing argument by conveying the devotion Odysseus has towards his family. He’d do anything to be with his family again after twenty long years without
Odysseus had mythical creatures and gods against him that in the end wanted him dead, to suffer or to not get home. Whenever Odysseus tried to get back on track to get back to Ithaca a new obstacle got in his way that put his life in danger which was most of the time. He could barely progress on his journey to get back home because he always had a setback. Odysseus had to keep on going even when he saw his mother in the Land of the Dead and saw his men get killed. He grieved those deaths and was more still able to continue on with his journey to get back home.
She helped Odysseus construct a raft, and he continued sailing back towards home. -Circe- A sorceress who lived on the island of Aeaea. She is the daughter of Helios (the Sun). She would give the men that arrived at her island a concoction of wine with honey and poison which would turn the men into animals. -Odysseus stayed behind, and a group of the men went to see Circe.
In the Odyssey, a work of Greek mythology written by Homer, Odysseus, who is the hero, embarks on an extensive journey to get back to his homeland. This journey is not painless, though. Odysseus encounters sea monsters, cyclopes, and even intervention from gods that are working against him. All of these obstacles can be related to our life’s journey. We encounter hindrances that may momentarily shift our gaze off of the end goal.
Perseverance helps push a person past their limits to reach their goal. Throughout the book, Odysseus faces many problems he must solve in order to return home to Ithaca. He must escape the Cyclops’s cave, figure out a way to get past the sirens, and dodge the dangerous sea monsters. His determination will help him get back home to see his wife Penelope and return to rule Ithaca. In The Odyssey, Homer presents the idea that perseverance can make a person stronger when they overcome many obstacles and have a goal to work towards.
Imagine being apart from your family for over ten years, fighting for your life in a war, and in the many battles and problems you will face on your way home from war. Would you be able to fight a cyclops, pass a dangerous whirlpool and have to face the fact that your crew betrayed you? In the novel The Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus must do all of these things and more. He has been away from his wife, son and many other family members for over ten years now, fighting for his life on his journey home after fighting in the Trojan war.
In the epic story the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is returning from the Trojan war, and on his way home he finds many obstacles ahead of him. Odysseus is the ruler of Ithaca and he is trying to return home to his land. Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Odysseus portrays bravery and courage leading his crew through these tough challenges. Odysseus heroically leads his crew and himself through dangerous obstacles, but also foolishly endangers them during the journey home.
Soon after this the two of them fall in love, and Odysseus and his crew stay there for a long time and Circes was an amazing host. She provided them with food, drink and shelter for a year. She also gave them instructions on how to get home and go to the underworld. Circe realized that she needed to be a good host or she would be punished, which she had already been punished by the gods before and did not want to upset them
The Heroes Journey, identified by American scholar Joseph Campbell, is a pattern of narrative that describes the typical adventure of the main hero, whether that be a fiction or nonfiction hero. The first step is the call to adventure, where something shakes up the hero’s current situation and the hero starts experiencing change. Consequently, this theory is also applied to the fictional hero Odysseus in The Odyssey and the real-life hero Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights activist. In The Odyssey, Odysseus embarks on a 10-year voyage from Troy to Ithaca and encounters many monsters along the way including a gigantic Cyclops described as “…a brute so huge, he seemed no man at all…” (9 89-90).
Circe’s aggressive display of hospitality is the opposite of the general standard of how women are expected to perform. For instance, when Odysseus’ men arrive at her island, she deceives them into eating a meal with “her own vile pinch, to make them lose desire or thought of [their] dear father land” (Homer 10.30-31). While other women are expected to welcome men with open arms, Circe disregards the common notion and goes against them. Her ability to control and manipulate the situation for her own benefit shows how she holds a strong authority over anyone who might wish to challenge her. Including her firm control, her knowledge and intellect causes her to have a great effect on Odysseus’ future.
Just like in our daily lives we need to learn that we can not do everything on our own, and that at some point or another we will need help. Life consists of many paths, but choosing the wrong one can cause a huge hurdle in your future. In life my hopes are just to purely become successful and to be able to support a family of my own, however there are many obstacles that follow this hope of mine, such as my immediate family being accepting of my husband. It’s a big thing for my family to accept my husband, because if they don’t like him how awkward would that be, plus they’d never be able to see my children. In the Odyssey, Odysseus goes to the underworld to meet Tiresias with the insecurity that he will be turned away and not receive his help.
“Survival can be summed up in three words - never give up. That's the heart of it really. Just keep trying.”(B.Grylls) The Odyssey is an epic poem written by Homer, about a man, Odysseus, who went to serve in the Trojan war, but undergoes a very arduous travel back home to his island, Ithaca. The Most Dangerous Game is a short story on Rainsford who swam up on shore of a island, and is hunted in return to go home.
The Odyssey made in 1997, directed by Andrei Konchalovsky, is about a man called Odysseus trying to find his way home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. However the story has many corny parts, bad special effects, and places where setting could have been improved or the story could have been expanded on. The Movie of The Odyssey begins with Penelope giving birth to Telemachus, Odysseus’s son. However, soon after the kings Agamemnon and Menelaus force Odysseus to fight a war against the trojans.
